an observaton about TPM

Well today I thought Id write about an observation that I made in the last few months of being here.

When I first started coming here there seemed to be almost nothing but polotics and world problems. It was interesting but Im not very poloitical person . I know I should be but its hard for me to get interested in something that I can't really change.

I have posted numerous times about everyday life and tried to say things that would make everybodies day a little bit better for reading it. But there was very few others that did (I know its a political blog page)

Now it seems that you can find at least one or two everyday that has nothing to do with polotics and I love it  I think it took a great web site and made it even better.

just today I read two of them  one was about GOD and the other about taking your dog for a walk and loved both of them.by the way I dont have the problem with walking my dog the way some of the commmenters on that blog did becouse he dont behave well enough to get off his leash.

Now my belief in GOD is such that I think  GOD exsist but he or she is not always the loving GOD I was taught about in church. In fact he/she can be pretty mean at times. But GOD can also be very good at other times.

But anyway back to the subject of this blog. This web site has become like a cyber community and its really nice to hear how other people that post here are doing.

It would be great if everyone posted something non political once in awhile so we can kinda get to know each other but its only a suggestion.

Another thing I've noticed is we have some great story tellers and poets here  So I guess what Im saying is this place just keeps getting better and better and I want to say thank you for excepting me into your community here.

I hope everybody is having a great day. And dont forget to hug your dog today  they need loving to.

It's interesting that not too long ago there were many who had just the opposite idea. Both opinions hold weight, and both have a place here in the Cafe. In general, I think the overwhelming view is that all voices are welcome as long as they are forwarded with conviction and honesty. Oh - and a boatload of humor never hurts.

Nice thought, redneck.

user-pic

We used to be more than politics, and still are. The election season crowded out other topics.

But even mundane mechanical questions like car design have a political dimension, and so do social and scientific questions.

user-pic

I think Tom has it right, so to speak. TPMCafe was never mainly about politics. But the intensity of the 2008 election (and changes with the architecture of the site which plugged the reader blogs into the news sites) changed that. Not only did it become overwhelmingly political, it also became more polarized and in some ways acrimonious. I don't blame that on anyone. I'm not even sure it was a bad thing -- it was a contentious and historic election, and there was a lot to talk about. But it did change the nature of the site. Now it seems to be coming back more to the old norm. My vision when I created TPMCafe was always of a place where we'd focus on more than just politics and the news of the moment -- a part of the TPM universe where we'd talk about the rest of what makes up life.

user-pic

Josh, thanks for clarifying that for us. There has been some suggestion recently that the "non-political" posts were not really all that welcome here, and it's nice to know what your intention was.

user-pic

I agree with that. It's good to know the leader's philosophy -- may come in handy.

user-pic

Nicely phrased, Mr. Marshall. May I call you Josh? A community of personalities has been created here and I believe that we have all felt it's worth. Yet, the depth and importance of political give and take is still very much alive and well. A blend of what we are as people, what matters to us.

Thank you for the platform. The water's fine.

user-pic

Holy bumpin' beef-hearts, Batman! Josh Marshall has appeared on TPMCafe!

But unfortunately, the venue he chose is a parody-diary by the parody-blogger "redneck."

Let me count the ways that the phony "redneck" spells political and politics in one and the same diary...

First there's "polotics," and then "poloitical," and then suddenly "political!"

Hurrah!!!

But then we're back to "polotics" and then back again to "political."

Harharharhar!!!

And then the dog... "he dont behave well enough to get off his leash" and "dont forget to hug your dog today they need loving to."

Harharharhar!!!

And it's brilliant, because you have to have your head about 9 miles up your ass before you believe that even the dumbest "redneck" in Alabama would write that kind of crazy gibberish!

Harharharhar!!!

And Josh Marshall fell for it!

And Tom Wright fell for it!

Harharharhar!!!

And somewhere there's a right-wing comedian who wanted to prove absolutely that left-wing bloggers totally despise "rednecks," and believe they write like brain-damaged freaks.

And that's the real poloitical message from "redneck" to conceited and obtuse lefties here, there, and everywhere!

Highly recommended!

user-pic

It's Kansas. And to each his own spelling, or lack of wits, take your choice.

user-pic

I would have passed over this crazy diary in perfect silence, except for Josh Marshall's comment.

Thousands of diaries by TheraP and Desidero and dickday and all the rest of the Most Followed list appear and disappear, and Josh Marshall might as well be on Mars with no modem for all the interest he shows in any of them.

And now...

There's his smiley avatar on this thing.

Why?

"redneck's" favorite quote is...

"It's your turn to make coffee." -GeminiWench

And who is "GeminiWench?

As far as I can tell, GeminiWench is an internet persona with a LiveJournal account, and a denizen of Craig's List...

I am looking for a simple chair that converts to a chair at a reasonable price.

Harharharhar!!!

A careful reading of "redneck's" previous diaries also reveals a union-hating but poverty-stricken noodle-head who has apparently worked two jobs for most of his earthly existence and only occasionally managed to subsist on one job because of 15+ hours of overtime.

This is obviously Josh Marshall's idea of the ideal diarist on TPMCafe!

Maybe he's hoping for some kind of re-education, but so far it isn't exactly working...

The union-hating diary appeared after months of mostly pitiful diaries by "redneck"...

"If it wasnt for some friends that I have here I would probably shoot myself."

"I was down graded at work today for no other reason then one of the bosses a kissers wanted my job."

And now "redneck's" new best friend forever is... Josh Marshall.

Harharharhar!!!

What else could you possibly call it except...

Poetic justice!

user-pic

I'm hurt. Apparently I fell for it as well, but no mention. Sigh. Or should it be *Sigh*? Who knows, I'm too dumb to be sure. But I don't think I've ever been happier to be a conceited and obtuse leftie - then again, do I think? Hmm. Oh! Speling is the oly way to now for shure if you are smart. Or if yur capabule of a thoght that maks seence.

Unless your screen name is Rutabaga Ridgepole. In that particular case, spelling correctly is pointless.

user-pic

Wot? Is this freaking vegetable insulting dogs?

TruckNutz!!

Also

Buttseks!!

user-pic

And also.

;)

user-pic

So if I've got you right, Rootie, the cardinal sins now include
1. eschewing the spell-checker
2. hugging dogs.
Right up there with your righteous raging against government sanctioned murder, torture, kleptocracy. You're barking up the wrong tree, blue-man. Need a hug?

user-pic
Need a hug?

Arf!

This reminds me of the never-ending endeavor of Princeton undergrads to get phony "letters to the editor" into Penthouse...

"My weenie is four feet long and my "girlfriend" is a donkey!"

Harharharhar!!!

"There's a sucker born every minute!"

user-pic

.

And unfortunately . . .

. . . for your Mother, who most likely is/was a very sweet and loving and caring person she wondered why it was her "minute."

Harharharhar!!!

~OGD~

user-pic

.

Now . . .

I slowly paddle back into the tall reeds where there's less pond scum to deal with.

Harharharhar ... QUACK! QUACK!!!

~OGD~

user-pic

Never trust a prankster!

user-pic

So how cynical does one have to be to spend their time breaking down the spelling of a post to develop a theory that redneck is a fraud?

Answer: Pretty cynikal, har har har

user-pic

Why should it matter who "Redneck" actually is? Maybe Redneck is Redneck. Maybe Redneck is someone's alter ego, or someone's idea of a joke, or the spirit of Rin Tin Tin.

Maybe someone's putting together a book of all their online personalities and comparing and contrasting the comments for each one.

I'll accept any of the possibilities. Online communities are a reflection of offline communities:

Some people are who they say they are. Some people aren't who they say they are. Some people aren't who they think they are. Some people are who you want them to be. Some people aren't who you want them to be. Some people are who you'd rather be. Or who you hope to be. Or who you would never want to be. Some people bring out the best in other people, others bring out the worst, others bring out this person inside you that you never even knew existed and it can be glorious.

We're all these things.

We're prisms interacting with other prisms, gliding and colliding, tumbling through time, all of us, evolving, reflecting, multiplying, dividing, integrating, segregating, making light and dark, winding through unfurling dimensions that breathe with our collective experiences.

We are not separate. We are free energy creating and flowing through a kaleidoscope.

user-pic

Go Rinty!

user-pic

How do you know that's really Josh Marshall commenting?

user-pic

You know there is a theory that Shakespeare really didn't write "Shakespeare." Maybe the guy who actually penned "Hamlet" was an ancestor of redneck, but thought Shakespeare was a more literary-sounding name.

user-pic

Yeah I am really elated that you chimed in on this.

Bravo!!

user-pic

heh, depends upon how you define politics (somebody smack me, now!). I just see it as human interaction.

Now if we're discussing government, like in '08, then you are right about everyone getting a little heated. But still, as long as we can keep it civil and not do character attacks, I even enjoyed discussing things with the myriad of conservatives that were around then. Some were just trying to incite (trolling), but others actually discussed policy or ideas. I kind of enjoyed that. Where'd they go?

user-pic

It's something good, and all its own, isn't it?

user-pic

Holy Cow, Red! You've got the Marshall commenting here!

Good observation by the way, and nice to see Marshall confirming it btw. I love the mix with the wider-ranging stuff on this site as well. Some fine minds and hearts, including yours.

user-pic

Just a few distinctions:

On the one hand, there are discussions of politics: This includes discussions of topics primarily related to parties, elections, poll results, candidates, fundraising, Capitol Hill inside baseball, political horseraces and the highly partisan warfare and exchanges of daily talking that people like O'Reilly, Hannity and Olbermann trade in. I believe it is true that these kinds of discussions tend to predominate here during election seasons, but were not the original focus of TPM Cafe - although they were always part of the mix.

There are any number of well-known internet sites and "blogs" that deal with little beyond these kinds of politics and process questions, and endless partisan warfare. Sites like the Huffington Post seem very partial to these kinds of topics. It is similar to sports coverage in that the focus is on how one's own team is doing, what the other team is doing, and coming forth with rapid rhetorical responses to the other team's rhetorical forays on the designated topic of the day.

A second category of discussion and debate concerns the major and minor issues with which politics and politicians sometimes deal, such things as abortion, wars, macroeconomics, foreign policy, work and the environment. Sometimes these are treated as policy issues, that is, we might have discussions not simply of what is happening macroeconomically and how we should think about what is happening, but a discussion of various competing and specific policy proposals that have been made. The policy discussions might be very serious and high level, but it is also natural for discussion of these policy issues to lead into discussion of the process questions and ongoing partisan struggles discussed earlier, and vice versa. I think this second category best characterizes what Josh Marshall calls the "old norm" of TPM Cafe.

Now I may be wrong, but I don't believe the recent phenomenon of TPM Cafe being used as a general creative writing forum about any topic that strikes the writer's fancy, and as a sometime support group, was ever part of the old norm. This seems to be a rather new social networking development of the site. That's just an observation. Maybe fostering this kind of development was part of Josh's plan all along. Anyway, the tools enable people to make of the site what they want to make of it, and that's what has emerged.

user-pic

"This includes discussions of topics primarily related to parties"

Wow, that's a nuance of politics that I think drew us all in: hold on, let me do a kegstand before I continue the discussion.....

user-pic

"Now my belief in GOD is such that I think GOD exist but he or she is not always the loving GOD I was taught about in church. In fact he/she can be pretty mean at times. But GOD can also be very good at other times."

You may be interested in reading (if you haven't already) "Why Bad Things Happen to Good People", by Harold Kushner. Rabbi Kushner, who watched his wife die of cancer, presents the thesis that either God is not all powerful, or God is not all good for such things as happened to his wife to occur. Well worth reading.

The Biblical book of Job raises similar questions, to which God arrives at the end and asks Job and his friends where were they when he (God) set down the pillars of the universe? In effect, who is the creation to question the methods of the creator?

Excellent book...read it years ago when my partner died suddenly

user-pic

Sorry to hear of your loss; glad you found some comfort and wisdom when you needed it.

user-pic

Needs ignoring.

user-pic

Referring to the one who holds his breath until blue.

user-pic

Redneck was obviously referring to Polotics or poloitization as a combination of Polo and Politics. It's a very timely comment considering Polotics was recently practiced in NYC by Prince Harry of the UK, whose grandmother, of course, is a noted dog-lover.

(BTW. Polo translated into Spanish is Poloit, so he was also attempting to reach out to the Latino community.)

;-)

Many of TPM's posters thought that by electing president Obama that politics as we know it had come to an end. Unfortunately this is not proving to be true and I imagine that the political content of the site will pick up accordingly. Certainly there is still political dynamite to be found here. Check out Phil Weiss's posts from Gaza.

user-pic

Geez, David. Give the non-sequitur Obama bashing a rest.

user-pic

I'm not being very original here, but I thought this was kind of cute.

From PRI's The World: What piece of jargon would you like to see thrown into the linguistic trash can?

Sample Answers:

Drink the Koolaid
Stimulus
Jump the Shark
Thinking Outside of the Box
"Killer" to describe anything, as in Killer App

If I had to add to this, I would choose "Culture Wars" and "Liberal Media"

user-pic

"Impact" as a verb.

Amazing to note that when I was young situations and people were affected by stuff, but now they are exclusively impacted.

user-pic

I vote for disenfranchised...makes me puke everytime I see it.

user-pic

Must be nice to have nothing better to do in life than to critique others. Actually, it sounds like a very dreary existence.

Hey GFY!

user-pic

Whatever. Thanks for the post Red,keep it up. Hey, dont be too offended by the vegetables, sometimes when they get a little too ripe, you have to boil them, add a little butter and salt, then they aren't so tough anymore and they taste alright.Down south we like em battered and fried.Hope everything is ok your way Red.
