« america or china | redneck's Blog | lostboy is retiring »

goodbye to tpm users

I have enjoyed reading your blogs and find them interesting.

I am leaving this site(at least for a few months) so that I can try to learn how to write better so maybe when I come back somebody will read them. I got off to a bad start by not responding all the time(I didn.t know you could respond after it went off the list). I also didn't write very well becouse as my wife and sons say I'm a stupid redneck (not in a bad way).

Anyway I will be here for a little while today. Then hopefully I'll be back after I study for awhile.

         THANK YOU

Instead of leaving, I strongly suggest you stick and around and keep writing.

Unsolicited advice:

Pick a topic that you care about. When you have some passion for it, you naturally learn more about it.

Figure out what you want to say and say it. Follow the KISS principle. You don't need to be Hemingway or Shakespeare. And you really don't need to be clever.

Blogs are meant to be spontaneous outbursts. So write as if you're talking to friends and not the Supreme Court in prep for oral arguments.

Write, and write some more.

So... stick around... what's your hurry?

user-pic

I just think the space can be used better by someone else right now. Like I said I don't write very well

user-pic

Says who? Don't get down on yourself.

user-pic

The Internet is awash in space. Stick around. Fill it up.

user-pic

Geez, I would welcome you to do both. But read and then WRITE something every day. To yourself if to no one else. Nothing to lose. Everything to gain.

user-pic

Good suggestion Dickday, but yours aways are maybe Ill try it just gets discouraging I don't have a lot off time to search for the information I need to write what I want so I just talk with my PC

user-pic

Stick around because now if you make a glaring mistake you can edit your post.

user-pic

Hi Lostboy, I've seen you around every once in awhile. I don't see the rush. There's not a shortage of space, stick around. I've read your stuff, i'm sure a lot of people have. i have a policy of keeping my recommends down to only a few a day, otherwise what's the point. Also mostly i don't comment, unless i have something particular to say.

I write like crap. But I try a few different things, try to learn how to write a bit better as I go along, eventually got lucky with one post people thought was funny. But you've got to experiment. Keep trying, find your issues, your style. Anyway, if you're going to work at the writing gig, might as well do it here... hope you hang around.

user-pic

Thank you obey, maybe they should put something on here that lets people know they are being read. I don't mind not getting comments and rec. but it just seems like nobody reads it so I thought I was wasting my time.

user-pic

hahah! just came back and saw you're on the top rec'd list!! You can't quit now lostboy! It's good to have you around.

user-pic

I have another idea. Many people participate without writing blogs themselves. They respond to the blogs and posts of others and get a real conversation going.

If you think the only way to participate is to write a blog yourself then you are missing out on 90% of what is going on here. I think that if you have the attitude (and you seem to, to me) that you want to learn when you see new information, and contribute when you want to share your own thoughts, you'll get the most from this site.

Hope you'll stick it out, and continue to participate. But as you read the threads, take note of how many people DO NOT have their own blogs for weeks at a time, and some of them never do.

user-pic

cvilledem do you notice I've taken your advice about responding I only blog when I have intend on being here for awhile it works better that way

user-pic

Yes, I did notice; don't you agree it's more like a conversation? I felt like you weren't reading the responses to your blogs because you weren't answering back. I enjoy your posts. Keep it up!

user-pic

Stay. Learn. Read. Rant. Rave. And don't forget you can teach us much too grasshopper. I find your prose to be real and heartfelt.

We all learn here everyday. Different things. Some important, some not so much.

C'mon in, stay awhile.

user-pic

I think I just might keep trying to get this blogging stuff right thank you all.

user-pic

goodbye lostboy

user-pic

Hey, you can't leave now. Anyone who puts up a post as honest and humble as this one needs to keep writing. Just keep doing it and stay genuine--I'm adding you to the list of people I follow right now.

user-pic

Since when did you have to be a great writer to post here?

user-pic

My thoughts exactly jep. I just, truely just, learned I can use google spell check to check my spelling and I have been putting stuff up with the worst spelling in the world. Writing well does help clarify your thoughts but sometimes you just got to just say it.

user-pic

I make no claim to any special knowledge in the field, but my experience has been that the best way to improve what you write is by writing more. I'd advise you not to stop at all but to keep it up! What I've read seems just fine to me.

Nobody always gets the response they are aniticipating. Try not to feel discouraged. Many posts receive but one or two comments, sometimes none and often few if any recommends. Besides, we need more rednecks with a heart expressing themselves.

user-pic

Hahahahahahah. Lostboy, look at all the comments you get today. All these people reading you.

Write what you know. You have been through a lot, I bet. When I said read, Read some of the posts, hit a link. Many universes out there.

I just like to see all these people come. Listen to them.

Lost Boy. This is Wendy speaking -- she of the lost boys.
Every personal goal we have is vulnerable-making. We speak, passionately, about those issues we care about.... and sometimes, it seems that no one hears. And then we think, if a tree falls in the forest and no one hears, did it, in fact, fall?
The answer is yes, it did, in fact, fall. Whether or not anyone happened to hear it happen. What matters is that someone -- you, for instance -- cared enough to document the fall.
Lostboy: stay awhile. If you cannot do it for you, do it for me, remembering the lyrics:
"Let's be quiet as a mouse
And build a lovely little house for Wendy
So that Wendy won't go away.
Home sweet home upon the door,
A welcome mat down on the floor
So Wendy, won't go away.
Oh what pleasures she'll bring to us--
Make us pockets, and sing to us;
tell us stories.... we've been longing to hear.....
Over and over.
She'll be waiting at the door,
We won't be lonely anymore
since Wendy, our own Wendy's
here to stay.
She'll be our mother;
It's nice to have a mother...
Wendy's here to stay."
Which quote is another way of saying: " Lostboy; there is always tomorrow, which may well be another day."
And, in the meantime, I'll make your pockets and sing to you.

user-pic

Geez, now you made me get my kleenex. I hate that. Actually I love that.

user-pic

Lostboy, I just FOUND you, for crikey's sake! And now that I started following you just a few days ago, you're LEAVING??

user-pic

Lostboy, I would like to add my half penny and say, I hope you will stick around. There are a lot of intelligent and well versed people on TPM and a few can be intimidating. That’s coming from someone who is not easily intimated, so I think I understand your frustration. Don’t let that stop you, follow the advice from all the caring people that have taken the time to respond and in the end, just be you.

user-pic

Thank all of you Well I guess I was wrong maybe somebody is reading my post I don't get on very often but I'll keep trying again thank you

user-pic

Excellent!

Don't let the turkey's getja down. You write good enough for this chicken.

;D

user-pic

I know how you feel, lostboy. I've been lurking around here for some time. I wrote one blog, but then after reading some of the other great posts here, I felt pretty inferior. I also don't always have time to participate as much as I'd like, and sometimes the words just aren't there. But, you know, it is what you make of it. I think you're always welcome to participate in whatever way you are most comfortable. I don't really know anyone here, but the regulars seem friendly enough.

Stick around and enjoy yourself! :)

user-pic

Melissa, if you have been here that long you have seen people that were great posters leave; you have seen people that were crappy commentors become great posters and you have never seen anyone accused of being an inferior poster or commentor. We have accused each other of being silly, unreasonable, asshats and insane. We curse the trolls and make them cry. You have seen great posters come and stay. We have called each other stupid and then apoligized later. This will date me but its all good.

user-pic

Seriously, what everyone above said. I think everyone here takes a look at every post that goes up, but not every post gets a comment. Keep writing. As one of my friends once said, "Practice makes better practice."

user-pic

"Practice makes better practice."

I must steal that, may I?

user-pic

.

Stick around . . . Lostboy . . .

Maybe you can let us all know what's up in Kansas. Even if you think the rest of us wouldn't give two hoots reading about the area of Kansas you're from, you'd be surprised.

You say you've been a workingman all your life. Now there's something that you can possibly bounce some interesting stories off of...

It's not all politics all the time.

As Oleeb said, the best way to get better at writing is to write.

~OGD~

user-pic

This is some pretty maudlin shit, eh?

user-pic

Lost Boy,

I have no advice, I think everybody above seems to cover it pretty well. But I would like to share my own story.

I have struggled with writing all of my life, in fact I had to leave college multiple times because of my inability to complete a series of relatively simple writing assignments (today I'd smoke em). And I deliberately chose a career that did not involve much writing specifically because of how difficult it was for me.

However, I have always felt that I had more to say and it was a source of real frustration that I was not able to say it. In the last year I decided to work on it. I started by playing in comments sections at various sites. Getting into arguments that forced me to write my point succinctly really helped After winning some and losing some, I felt confidant enough to start drafting some rough pieces. Eventually I made my way here to TPM Cafe.

I am in utter awe at the quality of writing here. Caferers seem to just pound out eloquence, usually decorated with witty references. It is intimidating to say the least- but it is also inspiring. In the last few months my writing has improved by leaps and bounds just by hanging out here in the cafe. I even started posting some decent posts (the writing is still a little rugged, but I cheat and add some pretty pictures).

Take it for what its worth. But hanging out here in the cafe is not only cheaper then a writing class, its a whole lot more fun.

user-pic

Lostboy! If you stick around you have to chang eyour name, but let us all know. You ain;t lost! You're roight here. Good writing means you took the time to read what you wrote and corrected things. I does not mean you don;t know any better. Look at me! I write okay, but my editing is the wrose because I hit often hit send before I read it again. It's he thought that coun ts and people are very patient here because we're not about the outside so much. Although, I;m sure it would have been easier to read if I did edit this. I;m learning to be patient. Stick around!

user-pic

Yup! Still learning!

user-pic

I leave for a weekend, and come back to see this.

Don't leave. This place is all about the exchange of ideas. So, when someone takes their ideas out of the mix, TPM loses value.

Your writing is fine. If you're worried about the MLA niceties, DON'T. I like reading your stuff, because it's honest and unpretentious. *I* learn from *you*.

So, please, don't deprive me (and, from the looks of things, others) of your point of view.

user-pic

Lost,
How will you know what you think, if you don't write it out?

user-pic

Lostboy, let me add to the chorus of folks who think that you would benefit by sticking around.

I find that, no matter how well you edit, or how perfect your spelling, if your heart is not in it, readers can tell. The worst pretentious wordy crap any of us writes does not have half the value of someone who writes in good faith, which you always do. If you are sincere and write what you believe, it really matters. You might be interested to learn that no one here has a grade book.

This is a great bunch of here at TPM Cafe. I know; they have tolerated me for several years.

Stick around and practice. You'll get better. You already have supporters -- half the battle.
