Single-Payer Healthcare Rally - Washington DC July 30th

As most of you know by now, there's gonna be a multi-organizational rally in Washington, DC, July 30th to express the voice of the people who demand a single-payer healthcare system.  Please let everyone know about this rally!

Here's the link to an organization, Healthcare NOW!, dedicated to single-payer healthcare.  They are working hard to coordinate with all organizations supportive of Single Payer Healthcare.

Healthcare NOW is also offering a teach-in  on July 25 to teach people about single payer vs the 'public option'. You can participate live/online here.

If you would like to go to the Rally and have the means to do so, by all means, PLEASE GO!!!!!  Healthcare Now will give you information on the rally, hotels/places to stay, and help you find a bus from states close by that will take you, and others like you, to this historical event.  Be the difference!

If you can't attend the Rally personally but would like to contribute and send a fellow TPM person to represent you,  we are coordinating collecting funds to cover expenses for Gumbun and Ripper McCord.  They will bring your voice by proxy to this important gathering/demonstration.

So far we have committed to raising funds for Gumbun/Kristy Ray and Ripper McCord.  Both have compelling stories and passion for representing us at the rally.  They've both jumped in and become very active in having a big impact on this rally and it's attendance.

Gumbun, also known as Kristy Ray, has created a video and web page to help get out the word and raise funds for people and help other people get to the rally as well. This video was a very emotional endeavor for her.  Please give her your feedback.  Here's her web link .  Ripper wrote an excellent blog post this week that explains why this Rally is so important to him too.

Please help us send them to DC to represent us!

DONATE using this PayPal Link

Our  Goal:  $1200

Funds Donated So Far: $875      Thank you! Thank you! Thank You!

Be sure to contact synchronicity@yeswecan.com if you have any trouble using the link.  (Synchronicity will provide an accounting of all that we accomplish)

We have purchased Gumbun's ticket roundtrip from CA to DC for $500.  Last night we were able to buy Ripper's ticket too.  But we will also need to get lodging etc. for both.

**With every donation you can receive a copy of our beloved Dickday's new ebook 'Arthur of the Roundish Table' (a value I estimate at $39.95) FREE**

If you are a person who really WANTS to be at that rally but would need financial assistance to do so and you would like to represent others here at TPM, please tell us WHY in a comment below AND contact synchronicity@yeswecan.com.  {Note:  If we send you, we will want a full report about your experience to share here at the TPM Cafe.}

Buy a ticket! Send a proxy!  Let your voice be heard in Washington, DC!  It's time to get this done!

Updates

* Jason Everett Miller lives in the area, will be attending the rally and has offered to host a meetup for TPM folk attending.  Miguelito2o is going and can give a ride from Southern PA.  Donal has business in DC that morning and can attend the rally in the afternoon.  Kfreed is paying their own way from CO and has already actively jumped in to participate in and sponsor the event and has volunteered to take photos etc in chronicling the event for us.  With your help we were able to get tickets for Gumbun and Ripper McCord.  Thank you all so much!
That makes 5 TPM representatives so far...but donations are definitely still needed and appreciated to cover Gumbun & Ripper's costs.

* July 30 FAXapalooza -- Clearthinker reminded us of the power of FAXING.  Whether you are at the Rally or not PLEASE FAX your Reps and you can review this blog about Faxing effectively.  Also, please see his comment below about who to contact.  Thanks!!

Oh, and, um, PLEASE RECOMMEND THIS POST!

Thanks!

user-pic

Thanks, Liz!

And thanks to all who continue to donate. We're a little short of our goal to keep Kristy and I lodged. If need be, I will take the ditch and she can have the hotel. But I'd like to think you all out there can help us out just a little more. Apparently, we still need about $400. Brother or sister, can you spare a $10?

user-pic

yez, well, sort of

5 of them

fried day

i promise

user-pic

It will hurt

But that is the point?

user-pic

Indeed. We're all being hurt in so many ways, Bwak. But don't do more than you can, no one wants that. Every small bit counts.

The total raised so far has remained the same for quite some time ... yet I'm betting it's increased. Do you, Lis or Synch have an update?

user-pic

Nope no change since this morning. I had someone who was going to make a donation this evening but something must have come up.

user-pic

And you're certain that $1200.00 is necessary? I'm assuming the answer is yes, since the airline tickets alone must have taken most of the $815.00. In fact, I'm wondering if it's close to enough considering lodging alone. Do you have any numbers on that?

user-pic

I am going to talk to Jason tomorrow to try to figure out what is reasonable as far as areas they can stay in that will be reasonably priced. I was just estimating and we might require more to cover the lodging and I have to figure out if they are going to need shuttles to/from airport. I am hoping it will be enough and we are committed to keep making the effort until we have all that we need for both of them to make this trip.

user-pic

You're really doing a great job, Synch. All of you are going above and beyond to make this happen. Keep your chin up, okay?

user-pic

Rec'd.

Are there four here who have not donated, who will each give fifty bucks?

Are there eight here who would each give twenty five?

Or, ten who would each give twenty?

Twenty in the TPM cafe with ten dollars they are going give NOW?

Are you one who will give five?

Are you one who would give because Single-Payer is a good cause? Because we need it in this country? Because Ripper and Kristy as brave enough to go in our collective place?

user-pic

How much did you pay for lunch today? For your morning coffee? That DVD rental?

Please think about donating - if you already have, thank you. Can you do it again?

user-pic

I hope it was clear, but I wasn't referring to you, leftyloosey. I was attempting to continue your thought. ;)

user-pic

I totally understood, BF, No worries. I have donated twice in the higher amounts I mentioned. You are making my point better than I did.

user-pic

As it turns out, some stuff has come up in regard to some other business I was hoping to accomplish while back East, and it looks like I'll be putting off my trip to the Rally in DC. :(

user-pic

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that, but business has to come first, Miguel. I'll update the blog for the next go 'round. Thanks for letting us know, and thanks for wanting to be there.

user-pic

Wow, man! You will be missed! I was hoping to meet you, but as LisB said, this is understandable. Sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Thanks for working so hard for this!

user-pic

Ripper and Kristy 'are' brave enough. The pug, or maybe the parrot, was typing for me. Ha!

user-pic

Regarding the FAX (and please add this list to the blog in the future), you should FAX the following people:

Your two Senators

Your Congressman

Harry Reid (Senate Majority Leader)

Mitch McConnell (Senate Minority Leader)

Chair of Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (Ted Kennedy, MA)

Ranking member of Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (Michael Enzi, WY)

President of the United States (Obama)

Speaker of the House (Nancy Pelosi, CA)

House Majority Leader (Steny Hoyer, MD)

House Minority Leader (John Boehner, OH)

Chair of House Ways and Means Committee (Charles B. Rangel, NY)

Ranking GOP member of House Ways and Means Committee (Dave Camp, MI)

Anyone else from your state that sits on the House Ways and Means Committee

http://waysandmeans.house.gov/members.asp

Make sure you address these people as "The Honorable", etc. as protocol demands. (See website on my blog referenced above.)

Make sure sentence 1 says you state why you are sending them the FAX ("As President of the United States,..." "As my Senator,..." "As a member of the House Ways and Means Committee from my State of ....")

Make sure sentence 1 says what this is about ("I write to you on the important issue of health care in this country...")

Make sure sentence 2 says how you want them to vote.

Keep the whole thing to one page.

BE POLITE! NO CAPS ALLOWED! (Yes, that is irony to see if you are thinking clearly.)

Make sure you include your physical address (so they know where you vote... include a district if you know what it is -- and you should!), as well as an email address and a phone number.

user-pic

Thanks, Clearthinker! I'll be sure to have the next post include a link to your comment. I appreciate the good advice.

user-pic

Also: please read and rec this post:

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/clearthinker/2009/07/some-fax-for-your-healthcare.php

that details how not to write your FAX. It is really a companion piece to this blog.

user-pic

Read and rec'd it. We'll link to that one too. Thanks!

user-pic

Thanks, CT!

GOOD GOOD GOOD

user-pic

I'll have to see if my afternoon is open.

I was just in DC today actually. On the MARC train back, three guys came in together, and one was talking about homeless in CA. He said that Redondo closed off part of the beach to feed all the homeless people. Then he said they showed them how to collect benefits, then he laughed like it was funny.

user-pic

Trust me. It's open. Come on along!

user-pic

He might have been laughing because the benefits could be paid in IOUs.

user-pic

Seriously Donal, please go!:)

user-pic

Donal, my friend, space on your dance card counts for a lot.

And California is another country altogether. We got a whole country to think about. Do it, Donal.

It is morally repugnant to profit off the misery or ill health of Americans. It's criminal that medical bills to the private for-profit MEDICAL/INSURANCE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX make up 62% of all bankruptcies filed in the U.S. each year. Americans spend 2.5 Trillion Dollars a year on Health care. The overhead at the private for-profit MEDICAL/INSURANCE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX is upwards of 35% of the health care dollar spent each year in the U.S. That is approximately $900 Billion a year the MEDICAL/INSURANCE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX uses for BRIBING CONGRESS and their lavish lifestyles, huge salaries plus perks and bonuses. All the while milking the hard-working men/women of this great nation of their hard earned money.
On the other hand Medicare has an overhead of 2%, Canada's system is 1.5%, Europe's 2.5% on average. The money that could be saved by eliminating the private for-profit MEDICAL/INSURANCE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX is estimated at $900 Billion a year. Enough money to help pay for putting all Americans on MEDICARE/SINGLE-PAYER TYPE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM.

We have to fight back and call, write e-mails, letters-to-editors, Congress and to the White House to let them know how Americans feel about the private for-profit MEDICAL/INSURANCE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX that currently provides the health care in this country.

Here are some Senators and blue dog(dems) who are on the wrong side of Health Care reform. Give them a call and demand,
"MEDICARE/SINGLE-PAYER TYPE HEALTH CARE FOR ALL NOW!"

Thanks to Dateline_Molly for this chart that shows how much money was paid to Senators by the MEDICAL/INSURANCE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX to OBSTRUCT health care reform. Link Now, when I call each member I can quote to them how much money they were PAID/BRIBED by the MEDICAL/INSURANCE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX to throw their constituents under the bus and deny them SINGLE-PAYER HEALTH CARE.

It is morally repugnant to profit off the misery or ill health of Americans.

Do you mean doctors shouldn't get paid?

It's statements like this that make it hard to have a real dialog.

The fact is that most doctors work their asses off and often end up with unsatisfactory lives at home (leading to alienation and divorce) because of their "lavish lifestyle".

user-pic

Clearthinker, please take the time to think clearly and digest what someone writes before throwing out a comment. In the six minutes between theirs and yours, as intelligent as you are, you still couldn't have considered it in a just and reasonable manner.

user-pic

It takes no time at all to call someone out for saying that the sky is green.

The sentence he made was shrill and over the top. It does little to convince people who need convincing and is easily shown to be foolish as I did. It therefore doesn't help his cause one iota.

I don't like grandstanding when the right does it. I don't like it when the left does it. It does not accomplish long term results. If you can't make an argument without it, your argument isn't very good.

One of the reasons why everyone thought Cronkite was trustworthy was because he was never shrill... like the newscasters are today (nearly all of them). If you want to change the tone of the country, it's easiest to start right here at TPM.

user-pic

Thanks but did you read the blog. We are organizing for the rally on July 30th and there is an attention to visit with every member of congress that day about single payer healthcare and we are going to fax them as well. Hope you will get involved and join us. Read the blog. Follow the links.:)

user-pic

Sorry I meant 'intention' not attention.

user-pic

Doctors ought to be adequately paid. Sick people ought to be adequately treated. Insurance companies ought to find their adequate business elsewhere.

user-pic
Insurance companies ought to find their adequate business elsewhere.

Baby and bath water argument. Up until fairly recently, the insurance companies operated just fine. Your statement is tantamount to deciding to get rid of all banks as a result of the bailout.

user-pic

Really? What is it that they did fairly recently that crossed over the line?

You are correct that NAVDOC3rdMAR could have used a better tone. We make a stronger argument when we seek to inform rather than inflame.

But I agree with almost everything s/he said, including the statement about the morality of making profit off of misery. In no way does that statement imply that doctors should not be paid!!

Wages are not profit. Profit is what capitalists make for putting their money at risk. I think there should be no place for capitalism anywhere in the medical biz.

And certainly the role of a for-profit healthcare insurance company is that of a non-value-added middleman making profit off of the misery of others. Which is wrong.

By the way, I donated to this cause to send fellow TPM-ers to the rally. Thanks, LisB and Synchronicity, for doing the work and making this opportunity available.
