Hail to the Captain
Okay, maybe you have to be a New Yorker, or a Pennsylvanian, or from DC to appreciate this, but then again, maybe you just have to be either an American or just someone who loves a happy ending. But what happened yesterday in the Hudson River should go down in history as one of the best emergency landings EVAH in airline history -- and since I can't link it, here: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/17/nyregion/17scene.html?_r=1
I know I've had some really lucky moments while driving my car and almost having an accident. I swerve, or brake, or let up on the gas pedal, and avoid something nasty, and I thank my GODMYQUICKREFLEXESMYMOTHER in that order and then go about my merry little way with my heart still pounding and a smile on my face. But that's when I'm behind the wheel of my little automobile. Imagine being the captain of an Airbus, let alone a taxi, or a bus, or a carpool van.
This guy kept his cool and saved every life aboard his plane. AND kept us entertained.
He deserves champagne.

Sure, he saved those 155 of people from death, but there were millions relieved to know there was something other then the Farewell Speech of w to entertain them. He's my hero for that too!

Yep, gotta give the pilot some serious props for handling the situation. See, there are some good things that come from Texas. The pilot went to the high school here in the town I live in.

The pilot is a true American Hero. He did not land on an aircraft carrier and pretend he had accomplished something.
This was not a photo op. This was a real hero.

It goes to show that you need to choose your former military pilots carefully.
Had a certain former Texas Air National Guard pilot been flying the plane, they'd all be dead in the mud at the bottom of the Hackensack River.
The captain was as well prepared and trained as anyone could be. He had a seasoned copilot and cabin crew to help ditch the plane and get the passengers out. They were quickly surrounded by ferry crews and emergency services who were also trained and skilled in rescue operations.
It was a wonderful demonstration of the importance of preparation, initiative, competence, and execution in dealing with an emergency.

I don't know the geography, but my guess is, even with both engines dead, Bush would never have changed direction. I think that means they would have dropped in or near Bridgeport, Connecticut, if they made it that far.

It was actually the Alabama Air National Guard, but point well taken.

It was an amazing display of competence from the pilot and the responders.
I was thrilled everyone was saved but I have to admit I was struck by this in the NYT:
"23 frequent-flying Bank of America executives returning home after meetings in New York..."
Bailed out again!

I was fascinated to find out the pilot also flies gliders. When we lived in upstate NY we often went to watch the gliders.
I think that experience flying gliders may have saved the day. Maybe all pilots should get such training.
When I saw that plane down in the water, all I could think was "hypothermia."
Thanks for this blog!

I’ve been a passenger in commercial aircraft around the world flown by Blacks. American Blacks, African Blacks, and expatriate Blacks in Asian countries from where I had no idea they originated. Fixed wing and rotor wing aircraft types. Nothing at all typifies them as pilots with the exception they happened to be Blacks. But when the details of the water landing in NY started coming out, I earnestly hoped the pilot wasn’t Black. If he were I knew what we would be in store for.
There is a lot of media coverage on the incident as the event warrants. But can you imagine for a moment what we would be subject to if the heroic pilot were Black? He or she easily could have been.
A fawning media would subject us to a barrage of documentaries, fluff interviews of the pilot, each of his family members, his Sunday school teachers, former girlfriends, you name it, for weeks on end. The guy would wind up with name recognition Oscar winners would envy. High school textbooks would have at least two chapters on the guy. Endless documentaries on TV. Movies about his exploits would start coming out. Then there would be endless sequels. Even his children’s names would be household words. I don’t mean to be flippant here, but there’s a good possibility the heroic pilot would be honored with a national holiday.
The media barrage would only be a little less worse had the very same pilot been born with a European name like Rodriguez instead of a European name which originated just a few hundred miles north and east. I feel everyone who does something exceptionally beneficial or heroic should be given all the recognition they deserve. But the way the media selectively runs some things into the ground anymore is nauseating.

You have been spewing hate on every thread in sight recently, and now you have revealed at least one of your primary motivations, you racist fuck. The fact that you came out of nowhere on this thread, volunteering this comment dripping with pervasive, corrosive, nauseating racist slime, gives clear evidence of where you are coming from. I have reported your abusive comment.
Be gone, you ass. You will find none of your Klan buddies to frolic with here.

No need to report. If you can lift a single quote from my observation above which disparages Blacks, or any group other than the media, I'll self ban. I'm waiting.

Find a single quote?
"... I earnestly hoped the pilot wasn’t Black. If he were I knew what we would be in store for."
This remark suggests that there is something in you that resents a person of color receiving praise. It bothers you.
After viewing your homophobic rant relating to a natural revulsion among heterosexuals to homosexuality, I think I understand your problem. You believe any instinctual reactive sensation you have is completely and totally justifiable. Whatever impulse you have is your right and if you express it no one should question you.
It sounds like you are a chicken, in the literal sense of the word. You see someone else in your coop who is a little different and you peck at them. You cannot help yourself, and indeed, you do not wish to be helped. You wish everyone to either praise you for being so bold as to express your aggressive, violent feelings, or to pay no attention at all. {I doubt the latter because you posting so much here is an act screaming for attention. You are very much like a two year old in this regard, but I'm comparing you to a chicken, so I won't go there at this point.} Again, I'm hoping some day you evolve to the point where you have more sense then a checken.

Yeah, melatonin aside. Have you turned on a TV lately? The eternal media barrage is justified by 'historic presidency'. I would like someone enlighten me with an example of a 'non historic presidency'.
This pre inargural 'coverage' is just wall to wall to wall ad nauseum. How about an interview with the brother of the guy responsible for Michelle's coiffure. The most historic aspect of this is the way the media is running it into the ground and it's getting sickening.

For the record, I disagree with banning spric. The comments are ignorant and hateful, but so what? This kind of poster exists to drive us all crazy, and I have spent more time than I should have responding, but the appropriate way to deal with dopes like this is to ignore them.
Banning them feeds the tiny little flames in their tiny little brains; we are above this stuff. The comments about the pilot are so funny that I just want to say this to spric:
IMAGINE IF THE GUY WHO WAS JUST ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! BY AN ENORMOUS ELECTORAL COLLEGE VICTORY!
JUST IMAGINE ALL THE TV COVERAGE THERE WOULD BE OF THAT!
IMAGINE THAT THE COVERAGE WAS PARTLY BECAUSE HE IS A BLACK MAN IN A COUNTRY THAT ONCE ENSLAVED BLACKS, BUT ALSO BECAUSE HE IS SO DAMN SMART AND SO DAMN GOOD AT WHAT HE DOES THAT HE WON OVER WHITES AND LATINOS AND OTHERS WHO JUST WANTED A PERSON WITH A WORLD VIEW IN THE WHITE HOUSE AND DECIDED THAT THIS BLACK MAN WAS THE BEST CHOICE!
Yeah. spric. What if the pilot had been black? We have elected a black president, NOT because he was black, but because he was the best person for the job. Stick around. You might learn something.

What a hurricane of palpable, idiotic hypocrisy!!
I cannot imagine a synapse arrangement with the capability to carry a critique on media editorial policy all the way to the very edge of civility as it has here. Is interplanetary possible with your brain wiring? I wouldn't be surprised.
This blathering moronic cursing you invariably revert to when your flimsy illogical tenets are threatened don't bother me. Let me tell you unconscionable hypocrites something.
If Larry Elder, a Black with no criminal baggage, GENUINE personal accomplishment, (doesn't use terrorists to ghost-write his books), and of legitimate birth had been elected president, he would be the sorriest SOB in the world on this site. Just look at the way you treated Clarence Thomas. Unconscionable hypocricy.

But ... if it does not bothe rhim, why does he post so much? It seems that there is an enormous self-delusion here. Dude! You post incessantly. You are posting on a Center-Left website with Far Beyond Right, totally unsubstantiated drivel. You are bothered. You are clearly and completely immersed in bother. And you signed up for it. You want it. You crave it. You then think people here will believe you are not bothered?!?!? If you believe that yourself, you better drill another well on that farm of yours cause there has to be something in the water.

As you know, CVille Dem, hitting that button does not automatically ban anybody. And if you remember the great debates when THE BUTTON came into being, I was one of many who strongly questioned whether it should exist. But, now that it's here to stay, I will use it once in a blue moon to report racist hate speech.
That said, I really enjoyed your mockery of spric!
