Thank Ferraro, or thank the community?

In a 3-13-08 post entitled "Don’t Get It," Josh discussed the Ferraro meltdown and commented on a particular statement made by Ferraro trying (unsuccessfully) to defend herself. He stated:

It took till the third round before I really got a sense of what she wasn't thinking. It became most clear in the chat show appearances where she said, I think in all seriousness, that Obama should have thanked her for saying what she said.

(Underline added.) I have heard a number of people commenting about this "should have thanked" remark and interpreting as Ferraro saying Sen. Obama should thank her for making the inflammatory he-wouldn’t-be-here remark in the first place. But I guess I just Don’t Get It. I’ve listened a number of times to various audio and video recordings (including TPM’s "Send in the Clown" video attached to Josh’s post) of Ferraro’s thanks comment. Each time, I hear her say she intended that her initial remark to "celebrate" the fact that the African-American community has come out in large numbers to express "pride in [Sen. Obama’s] historic candidacy." And, she goes on, that Sen. Obama should say thank you…"should say thank you to the community." (Underline added.) Now, Ferraro isn’t real good about completing her sentences without trailing off; and the recordings I’ve heard/seen weren’t necessarily any great shakes in the quality/fidelity department. So, I could easily have misheard. But did I? Or are others reading something into this "thank you" remark that was never there? What Ferraro actually said, initially and subsequently, was uber-bad — no doubt about it. However, adding fuel to the flames with stuff that wasn’t said isn’t good either. Did I hear correctly?
