They are all saying it! I just whined about it in my "Sam Stein is an idiot" blog. This is today's media narrative. This was the opposite of a "rebuke" for Obama (as Stein said). This was an "I don't need you so f*ck off" victory for Obama. Not only did the GOP come off looking like contrarian losers, the Senate dems can now use their behavior to remove from the measure some of the concessions Obama made to them on the grounds that they aren't going to vote for it anyway. Let them filibuster if they want to make assess of themselves. And if they do, and the Dems make some small concessions, the onus will be on them to break the filibuster. If they don't, and we keep losing 40,000 to 70,000 jobs per day, its on them. And that would kill them. Their only real option is to let the bill pass and to stand back and criticize it, yelling "I told you so!" if it fails to bring peace on earth and make everyone rich within 90 days.

Agreed. Why this is being translated into Obama changing his mind on reproductive freedom and abandoning those in the crisis of poverty is beyond me. It is no such thing. The inclusion of this measure in the bill muddied it up and gave the GOP a wedge excuse talking point against it. Now that its out of the bill, they have been outed once and for all as the petty, shit head obstructionist haters they really are. Obama revealed them as tin-eared haters who would have voted "no" no matter what the bill said.

This belongs in the coming health care bill. That's where the real fight is going to go down. And that is the bill Americans are waiting for and will enjoy more support because it won't be spun as a "bailout."

What makes you think the person being tortured would give an honest answer? Think about it: You just planted a bomb that is set to go off in one hour. You get apprehended and tortured, and in order to get it to stop you tell your interrogator it is set to go off in four hours. And then you lie about where it is and send him on a goose chase that will take up at least...one hour.

But that never happens on "24." The terrorists are really honest folks who always give true answers. Its a total joke. The problem is that people evidently don't realize its a joke.

There is more to an interrogation than getting "an" answer; it would be nice if it was a true one. And what the experts tell us is that torture simply does not produce reliable information, the inhumanity of it notwithstanding.

Well, it is quite obvious. POTUS and VPOTUS are inavariably depicted as making tough, unpopular decisions that are nevertheless critical to the safety of America; the storylines frequently involve airborne viruses and ticking-bomb scenarios meant to scare the hell out of the audience; the people who are tortured invariably are people who not only possess the desired information (which we know is rarely true in the real world) but give it up truthfully in response to torture. The tortured folks never lie to stop the torture, they tell the truth (again, not realistic).

In one particular moment in Season 6 the VPOTUS, who has just taken over for the second African American president, who, like the first African American president, was the victim of an assassination attempt (the white presidents never suffer attempts on their lives, just the black ones), gives a soulful speech about how no one can ever know how hard the president's job is until he walks in his shoes for a day, and thus one should not criticize the president. Ugh.

The terrorists are almost always Muslim and of Middle Eastern heritage, and they almost always are working with rogue Russians.

You almost have to watch for the absurdity alone. But JEM, commenting above, is quite sure there is no Neocon involvement in the show. Just little SAG writers with no agenda working for Rupert Murdoch. Right...

You'll notice that I did not suggest this is the first show that has ever suffered from a lack of a imaginative writing, so I am not sure where you get that. But this show (a show I watch, BTW) has a clear Republican agenda. Whether that's a good or a bad thing depends on your view point. But it is undisputably there. I am willing to overlook it because I like the fast-paced nature of the show and there is little else to watch at night during my one to two hours of free time.
The problem with the show is that it is written by neocons. It's not just the torture; the show is replete with subtle and not so subtle excuses for the behavior of George Bush. It's as though whoever wrote it did so jacking off to a picture of Karl Rove. You would hope that the show's ventures into the absurd (such as constant assassination attempts) would remind people who should know better that it's JUST A SHOW. It is totally unrealistic, as all shows are. The neocon messaging is a total distraction from what could have been a good show. Maybe they could take some cues from the writers of the Closer. Their interrogation scenes are not just disturbing but reflect a total lack of intelligence and imagination on the part of the writers.

Wow. Just wow. Far be-it for facts to get in the way of a good story. If you are such an expert on this case, did you happen to see the part of the tape where he looks down on his gun in disbelief? Are you aware that civillian witnesses have said he was shocked when the gun (as opposed to the non-lethal taser he thought he had drawn) went off? Are you aware that he had recently begun carrying a taser? Are you aware that some departments do not adequately train their officers on how to use a taser, and allow them to wear the taser on the same side they wear their gun (thereby defeating muscle memory and creating an imminent risk of death by mistake)? Are you aware that tasers have made both officers and the public less, not more, safe? Are you aware that some departments make their officers wear tasers whether they like it or not? Are you aware he had only been carrying a taser for two months?

How you could look at that video and review those witness statements and not conclude this was an accident borne of gross negligence and not intentional murder is beyond me. Perhaps accepting conventional wisdom is just easier than using your brain.

Was this negligent? Absolutely. Not only is it negligent to wear your taser on the same side as your gun, this was not a situation that called for the use of a taser. And therein lies another problem: Officers have become complacent about taser use because they are (usually) non-lethal. Some officers are not trained to understand that a taser is tortuous and should be the second-to-last-resort use of force. Some officers are not even required to submit to a tasering as part of their training. This was an absolutely inappropriate use of a taser. He should, of course, lose his job and possibly face negligent homicide charges (if California has such a charge. In Washington state, we don't have neg. hom., only manslaughter and up). But to say he executed this man? Come on now.

Let's think about this. The vast majority of police abuse cases occur in situations where officers can at least attempt to cover it up (and the abuser will always try). Does it make sense that he would "execute" a subject in front of a crowd of people holding cell phone cameras in plain view? What would have prompted him to go from zero to sixty that fast? Why would he all of a sudden, in such a blatantly public forum (and on camera, as all officers know they now are) decide to commit aggravated first degree murder? Couldn't he have found a better place to take out his homicidal, racially motivated rage?

Or does it make more sense that he is an inexperienced officer (2 years on the job) who received grossly deficient training in the use of a taser (which he had only been carrying for two months) and acted negligently by: a) carrying it on the same side as his gun (defeating muscle memory) and b) using a taser (or what he thought was a taser) in a situation that did not call for it?

Kick him off the force. Charge him with a crime that encompasses a mental state of negligence. But intentional murder in the first degree? Give me a break.

Another case of a prosecutor who won't do the right thing because pleasing an enraged public is easier. Just like the Jena 6 prosecutor. Just like Mike Nifong (Duke). Prosecutors gone wild.

I have to echo this. During the Bush years the country slept, criticism disappeared from our discourse, the media kissed ass, and most academics said nothing. Now that Obama has been elected everyone is a flippin' critic (despite the fact he hasn't even been inaugurated) and many are declaring his presidency a failure before it has even begun. Krugman strongly dislikes Obama, but he has now been invited to speak directly to him with his suggestions. We'll see if he accepts the invitation or just keeps criticizing from the comfy sidelines.

The people of Illinois elected this man. If they want him removed from power, their remedy is impeachment, by and through their elected representatives in the state legislature.

The remedy is not, however, circumvention of the United States Constitution by Harry Reid. The Constitution specifically grants this power to the governor. Blago is the governor. Ergo, the appointment is legal and there is nothing Harry Reid can do about it.

But I must say, it would have been nice to see Harry Reid treat Larry Craig with even half the scorn he is treating the un-indicted, not-accused-of-doing-anything-wrong Burris. Very democratic indeed. Can we get a new fucking majority leader, please?

Well, he may not be a witch hunter but his press conference was totally unprofessional and a violation of the ethics rules governing prosecutors. He laid out his case, in full, at a fucking press conference, not at a trial. He has not even obtained an indictment yet. So in essence, this is not yet even an allegation in the legal sense. It was a blatant attempt to cover his own ass against charges of a politically motivated prosecution and a blatant attempt to taint a future jury panel. The problem? This is not supposed to be about him. If or when he finally gets around to, you know, the legal process of getting an indictment, the first thing he should have coming to him is a gag order.

Everyone, especially democrats in congress, need to stop with this ridiculous hero worship of Fitzgerald. It is not warranted.
