I wrote something in a similar vein to your post here - however, I want to be clear that I do not favor the idea of this Administration following in the footsteps of the last!

I do think however (as I've mentioned in my post) that the Dems should have been more prepared for what the opponents of Reform had planned...

As mentioned recently on TPM - congressional offices were getting calls from people to inquire about their local "townhall" however, often people would not disclose their names or any information. This should have been a BIG tipoff! (Remember the Brooks Brothers Riot in FL/2000 - they wouldn't give their names at the time either!)

One way to have solved this problem - the events should be ONLY open to Residents of the Congressional District - and only open to people who apply for Tickets BY Mail - so that outsiders are kept Outside! and people inside the events have to provide a local address to gain entry. I think this would have limited the disruptions in a big way.

But No More Free Speech "Zones"

Thanx

Just a slightly related point on Prop 8 - I'd actually like to see the Legal challenge to this Proposition converge into a much broader question on the Proposition Process itself... as I think it has been an overall harm to the State of California.

From Prop 13 through 209 (anti Affirmative Action), the propositions process has been used to usurp the courts, the constitution (in this case) and the deliberative role of the legislature - and I think it needs to be reigned-in and made much more limited if used at all.
Any thoughts all??

Cheney makes his home in Wilson WY (outside Jackson Hole) so it makes some sense that they would try an appearance somewhat off the National Radar there.
Bush is literally hiding-out between the White House and Camp David - So the National "leaders" of the GOP are either trying to stay away from their own Campaigners and/or they're bailing like mad trying to save the ship or they've already jumped out (trying to save their own reputations).

Seems to me that the conservative "intellectuals" are largely abandoned by their own rank-and-file,
while those "base" republicans want to make the Palin's & Plumbers the new voice of their movement; I fully expect a full throated backlash from these reactionary forces once Obama has won the election (as we should all expect that he will...) However, I don't think the "elites" of the GOP will be all that interested in attaching themselves to a movement led by racists and jingoists.

We have the Opportunity here to build a New Majority of our Own and Leave these Relics of a Dead Ideology somewhere in the last Century.

Interesting the way the McCain Campaign is now trying to "play the victim" and get themselves off the hook on this one... trying to blame "sloppy" media reporting and obscure their own culpability.
Meanwhile by Fri the poor and delusional Ms Todd is out there complaining about the "liberal" media reporting on her story in a way that she no longer likes...

I guess on Thurs she thought she might still be the heroine of the McCain Campaign in PA - but by Fri, with her confession she's caught in race-baiting incitement... 'like hey what's a little racist fun housing among a few college republicans, no biggie'

Well, it is a big deal - it shows the campaign and the people inside it for who (and what) they really represent...

Having read through the thread - I think this needs MUCH MORE attention than a side-dish-blog, this needs National and International Media Attention and soon...

Also note the Obama Campaign canvasser who was assaulted in WI just the other day (and Obama was Kind enough to take notice and call the woman to console her)

There is no "equivalence" here - I have seen several stories of yard sighs being stolen or defaced, of Obama supporters being harassed near GOP rallies, reporters being intimidated as well (for their reality-based reporting?)...
Never have I heard of ANY behavior of these kinds reported from OUR side (needs to stay that way!).

These tactics by the McCain/Palin supporters are the acts of cowards and thugs and making these things very Public Information in fact validates exactly the comments by John Lewis that McCain & Co. found so "offensive"... So Okay John who is being offensive now? Either they own these tactics or they don't - so make them take a stand.

My Scenario(s) for the Election run as follows:

All the Northeastern States - New England, New York, and the whole Mid-Atlantic Bloc go Big Blue; the "Group of Four" toss-ups are FL, NC, OH, VA (these seem to be moving blue from what I can see), so if we are doing well enough in those four we'll be fine enough...

Next Group are the Upper Mid-West IL, MI, MN, WI, these are all fairly safe by now - add in IA & MO and it's done Bingo 272!

This is what I call the Mississippi Border States Strategy - whereby the Election Can be called after reporting only the First Two Time Zones!

Hoping that does not depress turnout in the other two time zones - but I think this is an opposite kind of election from others - Just as you couldn't find many people who'd admit they voted for Nixon after '74 and the same for Bush after 2005 - in this Election I think people are going to WANT to be able to say they voted FOR Obama as a way to end this national nightmare...
Thanks for the Memories:

I Remember Hearing that song LIVE on the night of 11/15/69 near the grounds of the Washington Monument, where nearly a million Anti-War people were gathered.... it was quite the event!

My Story from there - Met a few friends at the intersection of 15th & Constitution, we were talking with some local police and they were showing us their Peace Now Buttons hidden inside their gloves and under their jackets, letting us know that we're all okay here.... and it was fun and moving all at the same time!

Suddenly the Weather Underground People started marching up Constitution Ave. - the Police who were there had no gear to speak of and no gas masks.... It became clear to all of us that the Weatherpeople were trying to march through into the main body of the demonstrators. So it came down to a small group of us Demonstration Marshalls and a few Local Cops to try to prevent these "crazies" with 2X4's and NLF Flags on poles from breaking into the main body on the Monument Grounds.

It was just nightfall, the riot police hadn't caught up with the action going on; I heard machine gun fire, looked up to the upper floors of the Smithsonian Institution and saw a Gatling Gun - very quickly it was Raining down Tear-gas canisters by the hundreds - soon it was like trying to walk on a surface of ballbearings - the Weathermen were trying to swing their way through our line - I pulled one Cop away from being "beaned on the head" by these guys and got hit myself for being a "pig" - And the Gas just kept raining down on us....

Meanwhile the Airplane Played On Louder and Louder - as the Clouds of Gas Got Thicker and Higher....

"Look What's Happening on the Street..."

We DID Succeed in preventing the Weather Underground People from mingling into the main crowd on the Mall - we were trying to prevent a terrible mess from happening to people who wanted nothing to do with violence. Our little stand against the madness forced them to move away to 15th toward the White House.

Maybe more at another time....
Avatar Test!
