READ THIS. RECOMMEND THIS. It's RALLY TIME!!! For Healthcare!!!

It's time to do something!!!

In some cases, it really is a matter of life and death.  In others, it is about the quality of their life.  What is it in your case today?  What will it be in your case in 20 years?  30 years?  How will it be for your children and grandchildren?  If you want to have a voice in how things are going to be for you and yours related to healthcare, there is no more critical time to make a difference in the future of your health care then right now!

Below is the link to an organization, Healthcare NOW!, dedicated to single-payer healthcare.  They are working hard to coordinate with all organizations supportive of Single Payer Healthcare.

There will be a multi-organizational rally in Washington, DC, July 30th to express the voice of the people who demand a single-payer healthcare system.  Do you want your voice to be heard?!?

If you would like to go and have the means to do so, the Healthcare Now link below will give you information on the rally, hotels/places to stay, and help you find a bus from states close by that will take you, and others like you, to this historical event.  Be the difference!

If you can't attend personally but would like to contribute and send a fellow TPM person to represent you, we are coordinating collecting funds to cover expenses to sponsor people with the motivation but not the money to attend.  They will bring your voice by proxy to this important gathering/demonstration.  You can use this link to contribute:

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=6816319

It is linked to an account set up for this purpose, or contact synchronicity@yeswecan.com if you have any trouble using the paypal link.  (Synchronicity will provide an accounting of all that we accomplish).

If you are a person who really WANTS to be at that rally but would need financial assistance to do so and you would like to represent others here at TPM, please tell us WHY in a comment below so that the community will know AND please contact synchronicity@yeswecan.com.  You may also comment on those who wish to go to help decide who we send.  We will send as many as we can.  {Note:  If we send you, we will want a full report about your experience to share here at the TPM Cafe.}

Healthcare - NOW! is coordinating people to ensure every Congressperson on the Hill is individually visited by people who are determined to have a single-payer healthcare system implemented here in the United States.

We are up against a powerful, well-financed lobbying effort, but we beat them with our numbers! We beat them with our votes!  We have a voice that can drown out their dollars, because every Congressperson knows, their job ends when they fail to get re-elected.  We need to remind them who votes and what it is the voters expect them to do... represent the people!  We are the people and we want a single-payer healthcare system.

Visit the website and decide whether this is something you want to support.  Buy a ticket and go, or send a donation so we can sponsor someone from TPM.  When?  NOW!  Right now..  This is probably the most important legislative decision that will come from Congress in the 21st century.  Let your voice be heard.

Buy a ticket! Send a proxy!  Let your voice be heard in Washington, DC!  It's time to get this done!

Updates

* Jason Everett Miller lives in the area, will be attending the rally and has offered to host a meetup for TPM folk attending.  Miguelito2o is going and can give a ride from Southern PA.  Kfreed is paying their own way from CO and has already actively jumped in to participate in and sponsor the event and has volunteered to take photos etc in chronicling the event for us.  So far, we are sending one person who needs financial assistance, Gumbun.  You can read her personal story here to learn why we are so excited about sending her to represent us.  That makes four rep's so far... and we are just getting started.  Donations are definitely needed and appreciated to cover Gumbun's costs:)
The sooner we buy her airline ticket the less it will cost us!

**Rep. Anthony Weiner of NY is going to offer an amendment for single payer in the Commerce Committee so please take some action in support of that amendment if you would:)

A SINGLE PAYER AMENDMENT WILL BE OFFERED!!!

[Healthcare-NOW! has received confirmation that, in a display of Congressional leadership, Congressman Anthony Weiner [NY 14], will introduce a single-payer amendment similar to HR 676 to the House Energy and Commerce Committee's portion of the tri-committee healthcare legislation.

We need your help in telling members of the Energy and Commerce Committee that the people want single-payer now. It's crucial for them to hear from you on this historic vote. Please call today.

First, see if your Rep. is in the Energy and Commerce Committee here. (If not, call Chairman Henry Waxman at 202-225-3976).

Then, call the Congressional Switchboard at 800-473-6711 and ask to be connected to him/her. Ask to speak with the health legislative assistant. Say:

"Hello, My name is __________, and as your constituent, I urge the Representative to vote YES on Representative Anthony Weiner's single-payer, HR 676 amendment to the Energy and Commerce Committee's healthcare bill."

This is a historic vote on single-payer legislation in a committee of jurisdiction over healthcare reform. The amendment symbolizes the elimination of the for-profit health insurance companies from the health care system; replacing them with a publicly funded, privately delivered single-payer system that guarantees comprehensive healthcare for everyone in the United States.

This amendment shows that the grassroot support for single-payer is being heard. Let's keep the pressure up on Congress. Join us on July 30th in DC for a national lobby day and rally]

Of course Faxing is always more effective than calling:)

user-pic

Perfect move, and good luck!

user-pic

Thanks Lalo! Will be there to represent YOU! Hugs and smooches.

user-pic

This amendment makes the rally even more important!

Also if you have any connections with high profile supporters of Single Payer who have not yet committed to be at this rally please contact me.
Thanks!

I would love to attend. I cannot afford it due to my situation described yesterday.

All I can offer is my story and the promise that I can be very honest about my situation without caring much about who judges me about it. There is too much history and info to share here.

We also can do whatever we can from here (California) as far as organizing, calls, emails. We are already blanketing Senators with emails. No matter the scale we want to help. I sent the link to my blog from yesterday to the White House, Feinstein and others urging them to read and respond and contacted my friends to do the same.

My email is gumbun_2000@yahoo.com. I will visit the links above also. Thanks for putting this together. It is SO GREAT to be able to come here and find all of this organized, intelligent and passionate support already in motion. I'm running alongside the train trying to jump on!

I am organizing all of my photos from when I had my childhood cancer and I also have pictures of my mom in health, illness and her beautiful resting place. I made a slideshow for her funeral last year. I posted it on YouTube in November for family members on the East Coast. They removed my Eric Clapton "Tears in Heaven" song that was so perfect for it, but I replaced it with a YouTube authorized song. Don't make fun of my big hair.

Here's the link for the video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kx8htzqFXIs

Boehner and co. need to see that we are real people. Dare I say WHITE TAX PAYER?!?!?!?! Will THAT help Sessions to have empathy for all of us?

The video doesn't describe anything about our situation, it was a celebration of her life and all of the people that she loved and loved her so much. Yesterday's blog is still there too.

user-pic

I think you would be an excellent person to represent us. Let's see what we can create together. Please pass the info around about the rally and amendment wherever you can. I am also looking at how to get some positive, high profile personalities at this rally. If you have any ideas or connections via 6 degrees of separation etc., please let us know.

user-pic

BTW we are hoping to send as many people from TPM that want to go and need assistance as we can:)

user-pic

Synch: If you have a PayPal account set up for this I am ready to make a contribution, for Gumbun -- to whom I suggested this as a possibility yesterday -- or to Gumbun and others, if we can raise the requisite cash. Please let me know.

user-pic

The paypal link above should work. Let me know if you have any trouble. I'll post it here to just for ease.

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=6816319

When you get there it should say 'Send someone to represent you to single payer rally or something like that. I will provide info on what we accomplish when all is said and done. This is a group effort being made by many of us. Thanks for being part of it!

user-pic

PP payment sent. Thanks for organizing this Synch!

user-pic

THERE IT IS!!! Just promised Ramona last night.

user-pic

user-pic
user-pic

You rawk!!

I haz to look over finances. I will be flying over the protest, on my way to visit mom, and promise to whoop and wave, I have bookmarked the site for payday, tho

user-pic

Thanks Bwak. Please let me know if you have any trouble with the paypal link:)in the blog

user-pic

I do not recommend this link to anyone. The bit I watched was completely moronic and clearly created by those wishing to create a picture to serve their purposes. BTW the clinics here are closed on weekends too. What a piece of crap!

user-pic

Why is it that those of us who call ourselves "liberal" can recognize the value of freedom when it comes to laws related to reproductive health care, but they want to take everyone's freedom away when it comes to the overall health care system?

user-pic

Why is it that some people want everything to be only one way or another rather than what is best. I am liberal and conservative. I am for what I can see that is best for all. I want profit out of the healthcare system. In my perception that is best for all. You disagree. I completely respect that.

user-pic

What is "best" is a matter of opinion. If we all have freedom, then we can disagree on what is best and still live the way each of us chooses to live. If we are all forced into a single-payer health care system, we're being denied the freedom to seek health care from what many people feel is a higher-quality, more fair, more efficient system.

I don't want to deny you the freedom to seek non-profit health care. There are ways to achieve non-profit health care (cooperatives, for example) without asking the government to deny freedom to those who want to acquire health care in a different way.

user-pic

I agree it is a matter of opinion and neither is right or wrong. However I don't see a better solution than a single payer system when it comes to healthcare.

user-pic

If neither is right or wrong, why shouldn't we have the freedom to choose?

user-pic

Because one takes all of the profits out of healthcare and the other does not and they don't co exist well together.

user-pic

Whether for-profit and non-profit health care systems can coexist well is another matter of opinion. I think they can coexist just fine. If your opinion is that they can't coexist, and you then decide you want to deny other people the freedom to choose for themselves the kind of health care they want, you're following the same logic used by Republicans who want to deny people freedoms such as (1) choosing whether they have an abortion or (2) marrying the person of their choice.

Republicans have decided that since they feel abortion and same-sex marriage are wrong, everyone in the country must be denied the freedom to live in a way that is inconsistent with their conservative ideology. You have decided that for-profit health care is wrong, so you want to deny other people the freedom to seek for-profit health care.

Personally, I think trying to deny the freedom of other people is worse than trying to make money by providing health care services.

user-pic

Look we are not going to agree whoever you are... randomly anonymous or new. I am not interested in continuing debate on my blog that fell off 20 hours ago. If you want to address this post it on a new blog and do it publicly.
This is arguing at my back door and I am never going to let you have the last word on my old blog so let's just say we disagree and take your argument public where everyone can participate. Thanks!

Synchronicity:

If I can be of asistance to TPM, please let me know: kfreed00@yahoo.com (tried the link you provided above and was directed to Yahoo, so created an account specifically for communication with TPM members).

I am attending the rally in DC on the 30th (will pay my own way) and have submitted a request to cosponsor the event at HealthCare NOW (info@healthcare-now.org) as a private citizen (submitted under: Artist for the Ethical Treatment of People). I also submitted a request to lobby Congress (Congressmen specifically from my congressional district) for single-payer health care and am volunterring for the morning drop (see website for info). In addition, have received email from the office of Dennis Kucinich requesting support and have replied... awaiting response.

I emailed the following this morning to info@healthcare.org (personal info omitted):

Sent to info@healthcare-now.org on 7-15-09
--------------------------------------------------
To whom it may concern:

Are the afternoon meetings with Congress limited to PAC representatives or is it possible for individual citizens to meet with members of Congress (urging for single-payer health care)?

I wouldn't want to take up valuable time during which organized activists might take the opportunity to further the cause, but if possible, I would like to meet personally with my state's Senators (Colorado Senators Bennet and Udall; and perhaps even Lambert) as I have relevant health care related experiences to share.

I am a non-traditional graduating student at the University of _______________, an artist, the wife of an Air Force retiree, and the daughter of a Vietnam veteran. My family has come face-to-face with the inadequacies of our dysfunctional health care system (the effects of which have been disastrous) and I would very much like the opportunity to share these experiences with our elected representatives.

Moreover, having had extensive experience with a publicly-funded health care system in Europe, I am able to lend honest testimony to your efforts in pressing for meaningful health care reform and would relish the opportunity to dispel the myths currently circulating about public health care systems overseas.

I recently joined Progressive Democrats for America, Service Employees International Union, and have been invited to attend the next meeting of the ___________ League of Women Voters (who are considering joining the health care reform effort). In addition, I volunteered during Barack Obama's campaign for the Presidency, served as precinct captain during the caucus in ___________, and have attended various local health care reform events.

It is my intention to become intimately involved in the effort to achieve meaningful health care reform, both as a citizan and as an emerging 'Artist for the Ethical Treatment of People' (producing free ads for non-profits).

I have already made flight and hotel reservations in order to attend the rally on July 30th and have volunteered for the morning materials drop.

Please let me know if my request is a possibility. If not, I will support efforts as needed at the rally.

Sincerely,
kfreed--------------------------------------------

user-pic

Hi Kfreed. Wow. Glad to have your support. However to my knowledge every link is working and you can use the email address I provided so I am not quite sure what didn't work for you. I just sent you an email so that you can let me know.

All of the links in the blog work when I test them.

Right now we have one person that we will be sponsoring so far, Gumbun and we intend to keep posting. This is really the effort of some of us that blog here and 'TPM' is not participating in any official capacity. However we will greatly appreciate your participation and representing us at the rally etc. and reporting back and letting us know about your experience.

Thanks so much for you energy and enthusiasm to support single payer.

user-pic

Also kfreed. I highly recommend that you inquire of all of the organizations you connect with on single payer whether they are coordinating with other organizations and encourage them to do so. They should be able to have a huge presence if they don't all keep themselves separate and divided. I focused in on Healthcare Now because they are well organized and coordinating with many other single payer organizations.

And I am from CO as well so I hope you do get to see our senators. My congressman is Jared Polis.

user-pic

Synchronicity:

You're welcome and thanks for responding (will check email shortly). Understood from comments that TPM would likely sponsor Gumbun (any wish to connect at the rally please email me). Not sure what went wrong with the above email link. It only worked after I opened an account at YesWeCan.
No worries... we managed to connect.

Re: organizing... am trying... received action alert from CA Nurses Association (organizers of the DC rally; aka: Healthcare Now!) and am directing all PACs to their link. Some have already signed on as co-sponsors.

Will be attending another organizing event this evening and will do the same... spreading the word...

user-pic

Meant TPM bloggers sponsoring Gumbun (not TPM technically)...

user-pic

Synchronicity:

P.S. email address revised: kfreed@yeswecan.com (just created an account). Emailed you a copy of my previous comment from the revised email address.

Am willing to provide TPM with full coverage(including photos) of the D.C. rally... and promise to be good (for the time being).

user-pic

People, People, People, Don't be sucked into a plan that gives Federal employees the cake and throws us the crumbs.

user-pic

I think we can amend that plan to include 'everyone'. No need for alarm.

user-pic

NEWS FLASH........Those on the Hill pushing single-payer health care will not take it themselves.UM,UM,UM

user-pic

Hey! Thanks for the news!

Do you have a source for your prognostications? You may be confusing a menopausal hot flash with a news flash.

user-pic

Actually, I read somewhere (reputable source) that in Ted Kennedy's version of the bill it excluded all federal employees. It pisses me off, but I also realize that no one will vote their own gravy train away, and the feds have a health care gravy train.

user-pic

Cville, this reply is not to you, so much as it is an opportunity to discuss the notion presented. I suspect you may agree with the tone of this "reply", but if I am wrong, you can always reply as well;.

The "feds", or do you mean the organized laborers who work for the feds and negotiated a decent healthcare system for their brethren?

Now would be a good tiem to see an article comparing negotiated healthcare systems and those selected by employers on behalf of their employees. Nope, I can't see any conflict of interest there either!

user-pic

What I read, (and I wish I could remember where, but I am forgetful -- please try to accept that I believed it) is that the bill that Kennedy is proposing, specifically excludes people who are covered under the federal insurance program they have today.

That includes all branches of government (including my brother, who works for the IRS, and for sure he does NOT want to give away his golden goose.

I will search for this and try to get back to you.

I don't blame you for not believing it, because it is frankly UNBELIEVABLE!

user-pic

Who's pushing a single payer system in congress?

user-pic

Dennis Kucinich and John Conyers, among others... from 7-16-09 email:

Re: Change the Debate (feedback@kucinich.us)

"HR676 calls for a universal single-payer
health care system in the United States, Medicare for All. It has over 85 co-sponsors in Congress with the support of millions of Americans
and countless physicians and nurses. How does HR-676 control costs and cover everyone? It cuts out the for-profit middle men and delivers care directly to consumers and Medicare acts as the single payer of bills. It also recognizes that under the current system for-profit insurance companies make money NOT providing health care."

List of co-sponsors:

http://congress.org/results/issues/bills/?bill=9306566

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:HR00676:@@@P

They're still trying...

user-pic

As it reads in the first comment Anthony Weiner of NY is offering it as an amendment in the Commerce Committee in the house.

user-pic

True (as stated at head of comments)...

Per PDAmerica: [http://pdamerica.org/articles/news/2009-07-15-12-17-55-news.php]

"This amendment would substitute Rep. John Conyers' (D-MI) single-payer bill, HR
676, for the current Tri-Committee Health Reform Bill."

As of today, Dennis Kucinich was still encouraging support for HR676... Hmmm, does anyone know the new bill designation/number?

user-pic

Note: I think Jeffersonian is referring to a former post re: Quinnipiac University Poll

"July 1, 2009 - U.S. Voters Back Public Insurance 2-1, But Won't Use It, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; 72% Won't Pay More Than $500 A Year To Fix Health Care"

user-pic

I support this effort. If I had the money to contribute, I'd gladly send some. I'd gladly go, if I had the strength and money. I will continue to do what I can which is phone, write, and e-mail senators and congresspeople about single-payer health care. Thank you for organizing this effort and may the Great Spirit be with you.

user-pic

Great! Thanks Jan!

Rep. Anthony Weiner of NY is going to offer a single payer amendment to the healthcare bill in the commerce committee.

Getting that news out and getting people to fax/call the Commerce Committee members where it will be offered as well as their reps will be very helpful!:)

Know that you will be represented there.

user-pic

I'm going to try and attend the rally. I'll be traveling from my Dad's place in South-Central PA, so if anybody wants to ride along I can provide a ride.

user-pic

Yay!

The peeg represents!

LisB's neice Jennie, also a TPM blogger mentioned she might attend. I believe she is in PA but not sure what area. Please send me an email at synchronicity@yeswecan.com so I can hook you up with the other TPM folk who are attending. They are planning to meetup with each other perhaps before and after the days events... still being worked out.

user-pic

For the bloggers at TPM attending the rally... can we all meet there? Please email me: kfreed00@yahoo.com if you're interested.

user-pic

kfreed. Would you please coordinate through me. I would really appreciate. I have already emailed you information. Thanks:)

user-pic

Will do...

user-pic

Side note, Synch: are you aware that there is not a "Follow" button attached to your blog? Obviously there was one, as you have followers, but it is not visible now.

user-pic

Thanks! I don't know because I never see it of course but I just logged out and back in so maybe that will help:) Gregorzap will be reposting/hosting this blog next:)

user-pic

P.S. I see that you are following me now... I am humbled and honored:)
