It helps us figure out who needs to hear from us, and who's already made up their mind. There are 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

"Holy Cow!" says Rubin of MoveOn.org in his latest email. I couldn't have said it better myself. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and recalcitrant blue dogs have drawn their line in the sand on health care reform. Then along comes MoveOn and ups the ante: Oh yeah? Well, we double-dog dare ya.

From Justin Rubin of MoveOn.org in an email dated Nov. 3, 2009:

Yesterday, we asked MoveOn members how much they'd contribute to a primary challenge against any Democratic senator who helps Republicans block an up-or-down vote on health care reform [or an Independent Joe Lieberman who proclaims he'll join a Republican filibuster].

[Holy Cow!] Together, we've pledged an astounding $2 million in less than 24 hours!

It's a clear sign of how angry progressives would be at any Democrat [or Joe Lieberman] who helps filibuster reform.

The larger the war chest we can offer a potential challenger, the stronger the signal we'll send to conservative Democrats [or Joe Lieberman]. So we're setting a huge new goal: $3 million in total pledges by the end of the week. That's plenty to launch a serious primary challenge.

Here's a bit more on how the pledge works from yesterday's email:

You tell us how much you'd give. Then, we make sure the media, Senate leadership, and conservative Democrats [and Joe Lieberman] know just how many of us are willing to support a challenge against anyone who blocks reform. Hopefully, none of them actually do it, and health care gets an up-or-down vote.

But if the nightmare scenario happens, we'll encourage viable primary challengers to come forward, and if they do, make sure all of us who've pledged have a chance to support them. In other words, potential primary challengers will know there's a huge group of Americans who are ready to help. And conservative members of the Democratic Caucus will too.

The Health Care Accountability Pledge is off to an awesome start. Can you help reach our $3 million goal by pledging at this link?

http://pol.moveon.org/hc_fund/survey.html?id=17787-17258514-ExjryCx&t=6

Suddenly, I started feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. I smiled, I nodded, I pledged. It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood. With a click of the mouse, you, too, can experience that snuggly feeling. Won't ya join me, neighbor?

Listen...

I've got plenty of stuff.

I've got big stuff and little stuff,

stuff to set stuff on and stuff to keep stuff in.

There's wooly stuff and fluffy stuff,

cool stuff and dull stuff,

sparkly stuff,

and even some stuffed stuff.

There's smart stuff... which can do some real neat stuff... if you talk to it nice. Aaaand there's dumb stuff - it doesn't do much of anything except sit there and act like stuff (which is what most stuff does anyway, most of the time, when you're not there).

Then there's the low-to-the-ground stuff and the high-up-off-the-ground stuff. The high-up stuff I can never really get to. So I just leave it alone. It's less stuff to worry about.

Sometimes people will come around and look at the stuff. It gives them something to do, I guess, while I'm busy with other stuff. Sometimes people will say, "Hey, where'd you get this stuff?" or "You know, you could use some more stuff." I used to think so too. I used to think how happy I'd be if only I had some more stuff.

And have you ever noticed how you can never go anyplace for very long? Because, well, what are you gonna do about the stuff? Right? You can't just leave the stuff alone. And if you asked somebody to watch the stuff for you, they could for awhile, but you gotta understand: so now who's watching their stuff? It's a vicious cycle.

Then one day I was waiting at a bus stop watching all the people running around trying to figure out how to get stuff. Some people were trading stuff they didn't want for stuff they did want. Others were just plain giving stuff away. Then there were the ones shoving other people out of the way so as to get at the best stuff first.

And then, too, there were always a few who mostly just wanted somebody else's stuff. I guess that's how wars get started.

I got to thinking, Geez ... what's all this stuff about anyway?

Well, it's like when you open up stuff and look inside. There's stuff inside most any kind of stuff. People are like that too. You look inside them and WOW! There's stuff in there! GREAT stuff! If you ever felt like paying attention to that stuff, you'd notice it peeking out at you from behind somebody's eyes. Now there's the real stuff.

So to get the really good stuff, you could set aside all the other stuff, and make some friends, I guess, just by letting people look at your stuff. They'd probably even let you look at theirs. And that just makes me think - you can never really have enough of the right stuff.

**********************************************************************

Now, I realize that I may be setting myself up here... putting my "stuff" out there in public and all that (I can literally smell the temptation to dive head-first straight into the gutter). May I just say, preemptively: Take the high road.

*Inspired by the stuff of the late, great George Carlin (May 12, 1937 - June 22, 2008), political satirist, lunatic, humane being.

When desperate times call for desperate measures, I summon the spirit of George Carlin... we sure could use a man like you... right about now.

This just in from U.S. Senator Dick Durbin. Thought I'd share in case anyone's interested in voicing an opinion.

[Dear So and So,]

The tide is shifting our way.

You joined over 100,000 Americans to support a public option at CitizensForAPublicOption.com. Thanks to the tireless efforts of activists like you we've seen a tremendous shift in the health care reform debate. On Monday, Majority Leader Harry Reid introduced the merged Senate health care bill -- a bill that includes a public option.

The question is no longer if we will have some sort of public option in the final health care reform bill, but instead what form it will take.

There are several interpretations of what a public option should look like, and I'd like to share the preferences of the American people with my colleagues in the Senate. But I must do so before the final health care reform bill comes to a vote on the Senate floor in the coming weeks.

Please rank your preferences for what form the public option should take in the final bill at:

http://ga3.org/dickdurbin/po_poll.html?member_key=esiuu3599j3e56wk&source=popoll

I believe that a robust public option must give more Americans more choice on day one. But some of my colleagues would be content with a public plan that only kicked in if insurance companies continued to raise premiums at an unreasonable rate -- the so-called "trigger." Others would prefer a more limited public option, requiring state governments to "opt-in" to participate in the program.

I am "whip counting" the votes in favor of all of these in the Senate, and we're very, very close to reaching the 60 votes we need to pass a robust form of the public option -- one that provides more coverage to more people by requiring states to "opt out" if they don't want to participate. That's exactly how Medicare and Medicaid work, and all 50 states participate in those popular programs.

Ultimately my colleagues need to know what their constituents think a robust "public option" really means -- and what it doesn't.

Read up on the various interpretations of a public option now under consideration, and tell me -- and my colleagues -- where you stand.

http://ga3.org/dickdurbin/po_poll.html?member_key=esiuu3599j3e56wk&source=popoll

Virtually every poll now shows most people support a robust public option to expand health insurance choice and offer coverage to more Americans. And the American people will not settle for a "public option" in name only.

Neither will I.

Let's tell Congress what precisely we want and expect to see in the final health care reform bill that President Obama signs into law.

Thank you for taking my poll.

Sincerely,
Dick Durbin
U.S. Senator

What, oh what, to do about the continued financial rape of America? I have a modest suggestion, but first a little background:

From The Austrailian - Business with The Wall Street Journal by David Enrich and Marshall Eckblad | April 13, 2009

"Since the Troubled Asset Relief Program was launched in October, banks bolstered by capital infusions have boosted charges on a wide range of routine transactions, hiked rates on credit cards and continued making loans criticised as predatory by consumer advocates.

The TARP funds are intended to open lending spigots and make it easier for people to borrow money.

Last week, for example, Bank of America told some customers that interest rates on their credit cards will nearly double to about 14 per cent. The bank, which got $US45 billion ($62.6 billion) in capital from the US Government, also is imposing fees of least $US10 on a wide range of credit-card transactions."

Remember: "The TARP funds are intended to open lending spigots and make it easier for people to borrow money."

But then there's this:

Worker Uprising Against Wells Fargo Spreads After Major Victory to Keep Factories Open, by Mike Elk, AlterNet. Posted July 2, 2009:

"Last January, Hartmarx, the maker of men's apparel and an employer of nearly 4,000 people, filed for bankruptcy after Wells Fargo refused to extend them a line of credit. Wells Fargo then pushed for the company to be liquidated in order to increase their short term profits. They favored liquidating the factory and laying off the 4,000 workers despite the fact that there were proposals by several groups to purchase the company and keep it running.

The workers, members of SEIU, refused to accept the bank's ruling and decided to do something about it..."

[Sigh] I'd read various articles since last October warning of the impending bludgeoning consumers and small businesses were in for, en masse, at the hands of our credit card companies. At that point, we had discussed a contingency plan.

However, we were hopeful that President Obama's signing of the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure Act on May 22, 2009 would put a stop to the further pillage of consumers by their trusted banking institutions.

From www.whitehouse.gov

"Key Elements of the Credit CARD Act of 2009

Bans Unfair Rate Increases: Financial institutions will no longer raise rates unfairly, and consumers will have confidence that the interest rates on their existing balances will not be hiked.

Bans Retroactive Rate Increases: Bans rate increases on existing balances due to "any time, any reason" or "universal default" and severely restricts retroactive rate increases due to late payment.

First Year Protection: Contract terms must be clearly spelled out and stable for the entirety of the first year. Firms may continue to offer promotional rates with new accounts or during the life of an account, but these rates must be clearly disclosed and last at least 6 months. "

"Limited interest rate increases. Interest rate increases on existing balances would be allowed only under certain conditions, such as when a promotional rate ends (think balance transfer), there is a variable rate or if the cardholder makes a late payment. Interest rates on new transactions can increase only after the first year. Cardholders must be given 45 days' notice before significant terms are changed."

Full text: http://blogs.moneycentral.msn.com/smartspending/archive/2009/05/22/credit-card-reform-the-winners-and-losers-may-surprise-you.aspx

So interest rate increases on existing balances would only be allowed when there is a variable rate, for example? Oh really? So how does a fixed interest rate magically turn into a variable rate? Like this:

We recently received a letter from Household Bank (HSBC) informing us of an "IMPORTANT NOTICE OF CHANGE IN TERMS" signed sincerely by Patrick Burke, President of HSBC Card Services, Inc.

The change in terms to which Mr. Burke refers:

"IMPORTANT INFORMATION: The following new terms will apply to all new and existing balances on your account unless you notify us that you are exercising your right to reject these changes."

"Effective on 11/24/09, your agreement is amended as set forth below. These amendments apply to new transactions and existing balances on your Account."

"In addition, if your Account currently has a fixed Purchase APR, your fixed Purchase APR will change to the variable Purchase APR as described below: ..."

Right before your eyes, the amazing transformation of fixed rate to variable - Wallah!

Well, Burke, here's an IMPORTANT NOTICE OF CHANGE IN TERMS for you: UP YOURS.

Contingency plan takes effect immediately - the account is terminated effective October 22, 2009. We had agreed that if our credit card company decided to raise our rates for no particular reason other than pure, unadulterated greed, we wouldn't respond by sitting around with our thumbs in our mouths. Instead, we agreed we'd cancel the card and close the account - credit rating be damned. Once paid, we'll apply for a credit card with a fixed rate through our credit union. Meanwhile, if we can't purchase something outright with our debit card, then we'll do without.

So here's the fun part - Mikey likes it:

"Get rid of all your credit cards but one -- the kind where you have to pay up at the end of the month or you lose your card."

Full Text: http://michaelmoore.com/words/mikes-letter/michael-moores-action-plan-15-things-every-american-can-do-right-now

Teabag Parties? Aww, c'mon, let's really get all haired-out crazy! How about a credit card confetti party in celebration of the holidays? A public display of joyful mutiny anyone? Close the accounts, but save the credit cards for the coming festivities. Declare a moratorium on holiday credit card purchases. Start stashing away our pennies and buy only what the little ones will let us get away with. And while we're rockin 'round the Christmas tree, lighting the Menorah candles, sharing a feast, spreading goodwill on, well, the Day of Goodwill, or airing grievances 'round the Festivus pole, we will cheerfully remind ourselves that we're in this sinking boat together. Fortunately, there's no reason that we can't bail ourselves out. Whatever our religious or non-religious preferences for celebrating this holiday season we can take this opportunity to send a clear message to the greedy hum-buggers who brought us to financial ruin and have since profited daily from the ensuing misery they've created for the rest of us. Rather than partaking of the usual holiday buying frenzy, let the shredding commence and let's do it with gusto! Ahhh, credit card confetti - Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

Personally, I've already boxed up the credit card (along with a pair of scissors), wrapped it in shiny Christmas paper, and tied it neatly with a bow. It will be the one and only gift under our Christmas tree this year for us big kids... and I'm feeling positively jolly.

State of the Union and How We Got Here (Talking Politics with "Values Voters"):

Lest someone forget to mention SOCIALISM- OH MY GOD, WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE - Define Socialism. Remember that once upon a time in America the following industries (and others) were regulated (overseen) by the government. Google. Google. Google.

Deregulation (what our corporations - a.k.a. Republican sponsored charities - like to refer to as "anti-socialism " - which means "no oversight/no accountability" - and seem to have sold you on with a frightening amount of success) has brought you the current state of economic and political affairs we are so enjoying at this moment, including but not limited to:

Home Mortgage Crisis:

"Home Mortgage Crisis" translates to Mortgage Fraud, including appraisal fraud, a circumstance beyond your control but which nevertheless will cost you dearly should real estate agents and appraisers be in cahoots. This practice, as far as I know, is illegal as well as unethical, but is embraced more often than we'd like to admit. Or maybe the law has changed, which it has a funny way of doing when you're not looking.

How would I know? Well, "Hi, I'm Karen. I'm a recovering home equity loan processor." My choices were either to quit or have a heart attack, but since I had no health insurance, having a heart attack wasn't an option.

Lacking any limitations, and apparently no particular reason to regulate themselves, mortgage companies invented a series of financial "products" which included the Adjusted Rate Mortgage (ARM), Interest-only Mortgage, Home Equity Line of Credit, Balloon Rate Mortgage, and Combined Mortgage (super-sized mortgages, meaning first and second rolled into one which negated the 20% down rule). And who knows what else.

Now, it's not so much that unprecedented numbers of "greedy" consumers suddenly decided to make a run on banks in pursuit of the home mortgage Holy Grail. In fact, it was the other way around. Mortgage brokers were tripping over each other in order to offer consumers the deal of a lifetime: low (or lower) interest rates and low (or lower) monthly payments.

If you owned a home between the years 2000 and 2008 you probably received unsolicited phone calls, and/or direct mail offers, and/or email from a few mortgage brokers. Chances are you were inundated with mortgage loan solicitations until you cried uncle. For the most part, the idea was to get people who already owned a home to refinance their existing mortgages at lower interest rates or to otherwise take out an adjustable rate loan on the equity in the home.

And that would have been fine if the parties concerned had been at all concerned about the prospect of going to hell.

It should come as no surprise that once prospective borrowers sat down to crunch numbers, predatory mortgage brokers may "inadvertently" have failed to apprise said borrower of the sort of loan structure that would produce the incredibly low interest rates and the magnificently low monthly payments. No need to bother about it really, seeing as the broker was in a position to electronically submit a loan application on behalf of the borrower even if the borrower decided against it. This last bit had to do with commissions.

In order to ensure that a borrower remained unapprised, one strategy that worked well for us (the lender) was to ensure that closing documents (containing, naturally, the loan agreement) did not make it to the closing agent until the day of closing.

Anyone who has ever been held captive at a closing table can attest to the fact that reading your closing documents at the table is a no-no. Get the picture? Even if a borrower had the opportunity and did take the time to read the sixty pages contained in the closing packet (yes, at last count we were at sixty pages), the legalese contained therein would on principle presuppose a lack of comprehension. But then again, it rarely occurred to these borrowers to adopt any sort of CYA policy because there has never really been a precedent for the widely-distributed, wholesale fleecing that took place. Those who did catch on were, shall we say, a little huffy.

Somehow, these mortgage companies, along with mortgage brokers, and even appraisers, got the idea that there would be no consequences for this veritable free-for-all. Where'd they get that idea, I wonder? No oversight/no accountability and a change in the laws that had previously kept mortgage lenders and investment banks from fondling each other.

[Addendum: The Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 established the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) in the United States and included banking reforms, some of which were designed to control speculation.[1] Some provisions such as Regulation Q, which allowed the Federal Reserve to regulate interest rates in savings accounts, were repealed by the Depository Institutions Deregulation and Monetary Control Act of 1980. Provisions that prohibit a bank holding company from owning other financial companies were repealed on November 12, 1999, by the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. - Wikipedia]

So, before the ink even had a chance to dry, the mortgage lenders turned right around and sold those "subprime" mortgages to other banks. Then the rotten apples got bundled into packages alongside the good apples and the whole kit-and-caboodle went up for sale again. And so on and so forth. Finally the bad apples made their way into the investment market where stock brokers proceeded to sell them to investors. Some of those investors were companies managing retirement accounts - the retirement accounts of your granny and mine (see Bank and Investment Firm Failures).

When the interest rates on these mortgages got cleared for take-off, as everyone (except maybe the borrower) knew was inevitable, and monthly mortgage payments began to mushroom beyond the borrower's capacity to pay, then all hell broke loose. Thus, record numbers of people began to lose their homes.

There you go - in a nutshell.

Bank and investment Firm Failures: (direct result of home mortgage sham)

Part I: Pensions, investments, and jobs of average workers are lost as a result of the home mortgage crisis, while corporate honchos preternaturally amass previously unimagined wealth and then sail off into the clear blue horizon.

Part II: Government bails out bank/investment firm with your tax dollars, but you, tax payer, are still inexplicably devoid of pension, investment, and job - or a house. Tough luck - it was your fault in the first place! Or so goes the right-wing version of events when in fact the aforementioned fiasco was orchestrated by the aforementioned corporate honchos with unfailing assistance of the "right" arm of government whose coffers will needfully overflow with the aforementioned loot in the form of "campaign contributions."

And what, you ponder, will be the fate of the foreclosed-upon real estate? Answer: predetermination.

Part III: Let's 'cipher: wealthy investors buy back real estate at "wholesale" prices, wait out recession /depression, resell, profit. WHALLAH! - the "axis of evil" attains heights of perfection previously unknown in the real-estate-mortgage banking-investment market complex.

Don't take my word for it. Google. Google. Google.

Shortcut: Phil Gram plus Republican enablers both public and private is one answer. Google anyway just to ensure that you understand this is not merely a figment of a liberal imagination.

Oil Crisis:

Record gas prices at the pump (can also be redefined as inflation - as price of everything associated is sky-rocketing - food, in particular) are unscrupulously undermining what's left of our economy. All modes of transportation and some forms of home heating are affected.

Who benefits? Oil conglomerates earning record profits and of course Wall Street investors.

Sidebar: when asked on "Meet the Press" - oooh, about a year ago or so - if Big Oil thought maybe it might please cut the American public some slack, oil company representatives began cackling like old crones. Their response (once they managed to regain composure): "We're in business to make money. " Nothing personal; it's just business. Except for the fact that they have the power to hurl our economy back into the Depression era if prices continue to rise at the rate they have been in the past year.

On the other hand, I can understand why the notion of affordability might seem foreign to people with gold-plated toilets.

But wait, GAS PRICES ARE DROPPING! Could it be that the recent decline in gas prices may be related to the fact that we've cut consumption through voluntary unaffordability and have seriously begun to turn the collective eyeball toward alternative fuel, public transportation, renewable energy, and the need for higher vehicle gas mileage, amongst other such progressive-thinking notions? Or else it's an oil tease. Besides, it's an election year.

Just so's you know: the U.S. Department of Energy has publically admitted that "drill here, drill now" will not equate to relief at the pump - not now (which isn't physically possible to accomplish any time soon anyway) and not ten years from now. Google. Google. Google. Here, I'll make it easy: http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/aeo/otheranalysis/ongr.html.

Another juicy nugget: energy companies already hold leases on about 68 million acres on and off-shore. Instead of using them, they're stockpiling.

Nuclear energy (45 new plants spanning the nation, brought to you courtesy of McCain's-brains) is also not a feasible solution either cash-wise or otherwise. Why would we spend such exorbitant sums in order to dig ourselves further into a hole, when we could use it to dig ourselves out? Besides, the mere mention of a nuclear power plant in the back pasture brings on a case of the creeps as visions of neon three-headed frogs dance in our heads.

We have a sterling opportunity here to reinvent ourselves based on environmental sustainability, and to free ourselves from dependence on foreign oil and domestic oil companies. Google. Google. Google.

*Test on Monday over the abundant possibilities of generating renewable energy (extra credit for answers involving the words "Swedish," "Belgian," and "innovation").

High Unemployment: (current rate of which does not take into account those not collecting unemployment benefits and can therefore be estimated at a much higher rate than is currently reported)

Thanks to all of the above: economy in crisis = job loss = plummeting consumer confidence due to lack of consumer confidence in sustainable paycheck +/- newly-minted condition of homelessness = more job loss. It's a vicious cycle, isn't it?

Don't lose sleep over it though. You can always find work at a chicken-plucking factory: "There are jobs Americans aren't doing. ... If you've got a chicken factory, a chicken-plucking factory, or whatever you call them, you know what I'm talking about." -George W. Bush, Tipp City, Ohio, April 19, 2007 (http://politicalhumor.about.com/library/blbushisms.htm).

Healthcare Crisis:

Even if you ARE insured and suffer a catastrophic illness or injury, your insurance will likely not be enough to cover the medical costs (unless you're a member of Congress with health entitlements) and you can therefore look forward to bankruptcy. Oops, no you can't - because the powers that be made sure that it would be nearly impossible to file for bankruptcy (unless you're a mega-corporation with economic incentive entitlements) and so you lose your home, your car, and everything else.

Note: in the midst of the build-up to the mortgage crisis, a law was passed that would prevent individuals from filing bankruptcy: Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005. Was it coincidence or merely convenient?

As an added bonus, your credit rating goes down the tubes. In turn, bad credit could prevent you from obtaining employment, an apartment, and even basic utility services. Thus, should you have no family upon which to rely - you may find yourself among the much-derided homeless population. And let me tell you: there's a fine line between this life and the one under the nearest bridge. To ensure this, the only bad decision you need make is to get sick. Thus, we refer to this condition as a "healthcare crisis."

Note: half of all bankruptcies in the U.S. are due to [were, since you can longer file for bankruptcy] financially debilitating medical expenses, notwithstanding the fact that three-quarters of those entering into bankruptcy had health insurance at the onset of a catastrophic illness or injury (Harvard study). Google. Google. Google.

War on Democracy/Political Corruption: (related to corporate corruption)

Our system of government has even succeeded in deregulating ITSELF (meaning that the regulating bodies of Congress and the Judiciary with Executive oversight have been rendered impotent.) The President has proclaimed that he may ignore any law of his choosing if only he recites the words "Executive Privilege." He may furthermore alter any law passed by Congress due to a little known Executive perk referred to as the "Signing Statement."

"If this were a dictatorship, it'd be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm

the dictator."

--George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., Dec. 19, 2000

"I'll be long gone before some smart person ever figures out what happened inside this Oval Office."

--George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., May 12, 2008

Let us also not forget that (thanks to The Patriot Act) the government may now spy on you at will. It has, in addition, been empowered to detain you without charge and without benefit of trial so long as it labels you a "terrorist. " The official definition of "terrorist" is rather loose and has come to include language that suggests "anti-government" activity which would not, as it is, preclude peaceful dissent. Thus your local "fusion center" (fusion of local police department and federal intelligence agencies) may effectively alleviate you of your right to petition the government, to the freedom of speech, to freedom of the press, and the right to peaceably assemble. In other words: Adios First Amendment to the Constitution! Almost.

You may still practice a religion of choice so long as it jives with "Judeo-Christian values." Whew! We were worried there for a minute that we might not be able to invoke the name of God in every conceivable political discussion. The latest: "Terrorist Watch List Hits One Million Names": http://www.huffingtonpost.com/barry-steinhardt/terrorist-watch-list-hits_b_112596.html.

So if you're a good Christian and are hoping to escape the assault on your dignity as a free human being by rendering yourself unto the arms of the Lord when your number comes up- not so fast. There is one last indignity that awaits you upon your departure to the hereafter.

Allow me to explain.

It just so happens that our very own Constitution states, "The Congress shall have Power to lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States."

How exactly does the current tax system provide for the "general welfare"? Instead, your taxes contribute to the general welfare of the wealthiest among us. The Bush Tax Cuts (your share was $300, remember?), which John McCain suddenly finds so appealing, further provide untold amounts of payola scraped from the backsides of those who can least afford it - whether living or DEAD. Think I'm joshin'? Okay, so here's another example of the endless despicable things that our sanctified corporations (through the generous support of our "democratic" government) do with your tax dollars: "dead peasant" insurance. Just a hint: the term "dead peasant" refers to YOU and ME once rigamortis sets in.

In short, "dead peasant" insurance is a slang term for corporate-owned life insurance. So maybe you're thinking, Great! My company will look out for my family if I die. Wrong. Here's how it works: an employer is legally entitled to take out secret life insurance policies on rank-and-file employees. The insured employees don't even know that the policies exist. Whenever said employees kick the bucket, the employer collects even if an employee no longer works for the company. How much goes to the family of the deceased? NONE - ZERO - ZIP.

It isn't so much the insurance money that corporations are salivating over - it's the generous tax breaks they get. The premiums and insurance payoffs are tax deductible. Moreover, the company can borrow against the insurance policy. Therefore, as a taxpayer, you indirectly assist your employer (or former employer) in profiting from your demise to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars. SA-WEET!

According to MSN Money, "Hundreds of companies -- including Dow Chemical, Procter & Gamble, Wal-Mart, Walt Disney and Winn-Dixie -- have purchased this insurance on more than 6 million rank-and-file workers" (http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/insurance/p64954.asp). Once you've begun Googling, note that the names Enron and Phil Gramm (McCain's economic advisor) mysteriously crop up again. Phil Gramm happens to be McCain's pick for Secretary of the Treasury should he be elected President.

Recently I've learned that new laws require companies to obtain employee consent before taking out corporate-owned life insurance policies. BUT, is consent a condition of employment? You do the 'ciphering.

In light of these and similar events, if you're still aboard the "Straight-Talk Express," I'd say it's time to get off the bus, Gus. Make a new plan, Stan. No need to be coy, Roy - just set yourself free.

Meanwhile, I'll be sleeping with one eye open.

August 9, 2009

Huffington Post requested town hall participants to submit citizen reports to their Eyes & Ears health care town hall coverage section. I submit this report with the following disclaimer: I was an active participate during the event, and therefore cannot be considered an objective observer. Thus, the following will serve as a blog post at best:

Saturday, August 8, 2009: U.S. Representative Ed Perlmutter (D - CO) was due to arrive at the Brighton, CO King Soopers on Bromley Lane at 1:00 p.m. to host a health care town hall in order to meet with the voters of Colorado's 7th congressional district.

My husband and I arrived at the King Soopers parking lot at 12:15 p.m. with the intention of demonstrating our support for health care reform. We do not live in the district and therefore did not expect to be heard at the meeting. We simply wanted to stand with supporters of the health care reform movement to counteract the influence of out-of-district conservative protestors bent on disrupting the town hall.

Members of "team red" had begun to gather in the parking lot across from the King Soopers entrance - flags flying and anti-health care reform banners waving. "Team blue" was also in attendance, pro-reform messages clearly on display. None of the protestors from either group were from Colorado District 7. I know because I asked - the gathering was yet small enough in number to ask individuals from whence they hail. Those who actually belonged at the town hall patiently formed a line near the doors.

Note that conservative front groups plainly broadcast their disruptive intentions throughout the blogosphere and the results have been reported upon incessantly since the initial onslaught of marauding mobs at town halls across the country.

Conservatives for Patients' Rights posted an online listing of up-coming town halls on their website at www.cprights.org. These town halls, organized according to U.S. congressional district, have been targeted and over-run by crowds of rabid right-ring protestors, egged on by conservative commentators at Fox News. The "shock and awe" tactics employed by organized crews of right-wing hecklers are orchestrated action plans designed to intimidate peaceful citizens seeking answers about health care reform from their elected officials.

Until recently, rampaging conservatives were succeeding in having their way with us, managing to shut down meetings and consequently hijacking the narrative of the health care reform debate. Democratic leaders and their constituents confronted right-wing outbursts at town halls with deer-in-the-highlights bewilderment. That was until Organizing for America (OFA), a progressive "successor" organization born of the grassroots movement to elect President Obama, and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) began encouraging members to support the health care reform effort at town hall meetings.

Meanwhile, sponsors of the chaos are attempting to pass off virtual terrorism as a "conservative anti-reform grassroots movement". Pappy-git-y'ur-gun fairly sums up the message of certain anti-health care reform protestors who are promoting town hall violence via the internet. According to a report by Brian Buetler of Talking Points Memo, one such individual from New Mexico by the name of Scott Oskay tweeted the following:

"If ACORN/SEIU attends these townhalls for disruption, stop being peaceful, and hurt them. Badly. #iamthemob"

And this:

"If ACORN/SEIU attends these meetings for disruptive purposes, and you have a license to carry... carry."

Enough is enough. There are concerned Republican voters and then there's the leftover conservative Rovian menace. There's a difference. Sifting through the crowd at a town hall, it isn't particularly difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. The "Aktion Plan" is on full display, carried out seamlessly by those working behind the scenes to safeguard the interests of the health insurance industry; their interests in this instance being to simultaneously tank President Obama's public health care option while securing for themselves a mandate that would require every American to purchase health insurance. Money is at stake - lots of it. Unfortunately, innocent bystanders, concerned voters on either side of the debate, are unwittingly drawn into the fracas.

My experience at the Brighton town hall demonstrated to me that decent people have been sucked into one end of the propaganda mill and spit out on the other side. These people are genuinely afraid, scared witless of losing what health care they presently have, and they are being thoroughly exploited by the likes of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, et al. A recurring theme is a crippling dread of "government takeover" - interpreted by some as the imminent threat of Communism. For some, panic is a reasonable response in light of the constant barrage of willful misinformation - let's face it - outright lies spread by conservation politicians and their cheerleaders on Fox.

At the town hall I was similarly assaulted from every angle with an avalanche of ficticous "facts" concerning HR3200, the health care reform bill currently at the center of the health care reform debate. "It's a matter of interpretation" I countered, allowing the arguments to fly - noting also that I was surrounded and being recorded on several fronts. One elderly gentleman holding a hand-lettered sign that read "Granny Take Your Pill" informed me that Obama's public health care option would kill my grandmother. I respectfully asked him if he seriously believed that I would support a bill that would kill anyone's mee-maw. He blinked twice before another anti-reform protester carrying a bright yellow "Don't Tread on Me" flag stepped up to the plate to further my education.

Mr. "Don't-Tread-Me" was not an evil individual. He was another elderly gent adamant that I allow him to express a rather urgent opinion - several, in fact. I nodded patiently and countered with the truth whenever he paused to breath. Upon closer examination of one another, we were eventually forced to come to terms on the grounds that we are both human and both American citizens. The argument subsided and gave way to talk of military matters - a common thread that ran through both our lives. Our exchange ended with a handshake, as did so many of the heated exchanges that flared up here and there between "pro" and "anti" protesters throughout the course of the afternoon.

The rabble-rousers, however, were in no mood to debate. Fortunately, they were easy to pin-point. Vile expressions on their faces, a generalized belligerent tone of voice, and the tendency to attempt to pick a fight with anyone who looked as though they might disagree - Bingo! There were no takers - Aktion Plan, Phase I effectively thwarted. Moreover, they soon discovered that they were strategically outnumbered at least three to one. Team-blue had arrived in force - as had members of the Brighton police department.

Congressman Perlmutter had his act together. The town hall strategy was to meet with constituents face-to-face in groups of five, with five to ten minutes allotted per group. The meeting began promptly at 1:00 p.m. and was scheduled to end at 3:00 p.m. The meeting area had been cordoned off outdoors around a table near the King Soopers entrance. Rep. Perlmutter's organizers handed out questionnaires to those standing in line, requiring participants to provide name, address, and contact information. Constituents would meet with their Congressman. Non-constituents needed not apply: one way of separating the wheat from the chaff.

Those hoping to vociferously complain that they hadn't been given the opportunity to be heard were reminded of the fact that they didn't reside within the district. Fair enough. There was no denial of anyone's right to free speech. Thus, Aktion Plan, Phase 2 takes a serious hit - playing the victim is a no-go.

Upon Congressman Perlmutter's arrival, Aktion Plan, Phase 3 kicked-in. The anti-reform crowd launched a verbal attack. Booing, hissing, and a general hurling of insults ensued. Team blue chimed in en masse, with a chant of "Thank-You-Ed" that succeeded in drowning out the foulness. Rep. Perlmutter addressed the crowd, ensuring his constituents that they would have the opportunity to be heard. He left off with a general "thank you for attending." He even remembered to bring his bullhorn - just in case. There was no speech. Aktion Plan, Phase 3 turned out to be a bust. The tactic of shouting down the speaker had effectively been terminated as a viable option.

Team-blue had its act together as well. Organizing for America volunteers arrived with signs bearing the slogan "Standing Together for Health Insurance Reform" (the words "Thank You" printed on the other side). Volunteers handed out signs to anyone who requested to have one. Then we surrounded them. For every anti-health care reform sign, several pro-reform signs appeared in their direct vicinity. Whenever team-red geared up to shout, Team-blue responded with chants of "Yes We Can!" or "What Do We Want? Healthcare! When Do We Want It? Now!" Team-red couldn't get a rant in edgewise - except for angry-Bob.

His name wasn't Bob. However, I'll refer to him as such. This man requires a note or two all to himself. You had to hand it to Bob. Bob arrived late to the party and Bob was fit to be tied. The effect of his voice on my psyche was the equivalent of rolling my brain in glass. He screeched, screamed, and veritably spit vinegar for half an hour straight. He was the mob unto himself. "NO SOCIALIZED MEDICINE!!!!!!!!!!!!" on instant replay reverberated throughout the strip mall, bounced off the walls, and circled back to slam his audience in the gut.

Bob had his target in sight (Rep. Perlmutter) and didn't beg off until they locked the doors and shut off the lights. When an older gentleman made the mistake of ever-so-gently touching him on the arm, Bob turned on him and demanded that he be arrested for assault. The police weren't having it. Bob demanded to be "HEARD!!!!!!!" although Bob wasn't a district 7 constituent. Bob screamed that he wasn't allowed a "VOICE!!!!!!!!!" I image that Colorado residents along the entire front range would testify otherwise.

In the end, we were thanked again for coming and Rep. Perlmutter reminded his constituents of an up-coming Tele-Town Hall event. We were furthermore encouraged to float some cash around to the businesses forced to put up with the crowd milling about in the parking lot. The round of applause and chants of "Thank-You-Ed" from health care reform supporters was deafening. From team-red, nary an insult was heard - not even from Bob. It was a disappointing "town brawl" after all. As far as town halIs go, I rate it a spectacular success. As near as I can figure, Coloradans must just have really good manners. Except Bob.

I don't know what ever happened to Bob. The event broke up, everyone went home, and the last thing we heard on our way out of town was "NO SOCIALIZED MEDICINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" The would-be victim may still be throwing a fit in the parking lot of King Soopers in Brighton for all anyone cares.

Kenneth Gladney of St. Louis, anti-health care reform protester and newly christened poster boy for the teabag "revolution," is uninsured and seeking donations to cover his medical expenses. Hmmmm.

Get the full scoop at Washington Monthly: http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2009_08/019423.php

At a recent town hall, I stumbled upon some rather interesting circumstances. The teabag experts with whom I spoke, and they were many and varied, were either Medicare recipients and thus insured by a government-run health care program, in the military or retired military and thus covered by Tricare (another government-run health care program), or uninsured. None of them had ever heard the term "rescission."

One woman, when I asked her what kind of medical insurance she had, told me that she had "the kind you pay for". So I asked, "Which insurance provider?" She said, "The kind you pay for." I replied, "Yes, but which insurance company?" She said, "The kind you pay for." It was a curiously Katie Couric/Sarah Palin moment.

I suspected that this woman was, in fact, uninsured.

Moreover, I can't count the number of times I was confronted with "Why should I pay for your health care?" My response: "Why not? I pay for yours, don't I? Both Medicare and Tricare are supported by federal taxes and I pay taxes. So what's your point?"

Besides, I have health insurance, but I also have a conscience about those who don't have it and can't get it.

In the car on the way home I told my husband that I didn't think many of these people even had health insurance, yet they were protesting Obama's public/private health care exchange.

So here's my dilemma: Do I contribute to Kenneth Gladney's health care fund or let him suffer?

I'm sick. The hand-wringing and finger-pointing going on at this site is ruining my will to live.

Somebody asked why they should attend their state's town hall meeting if the bill on the table doesn't include the public option. My head exploded. The reason you should attend a town hall meeting is to demonstrate the fact that you demand a public option - at the very least - and to explain why you demand a public option. It can only help to combat the screaming meemies of the "opposition" mob. Staging all-or-nothing tantrums over single-payer will result in - absolutely nothing. By all means, continue the fight for single-payer, but to help the Republicans tank the public option out of spite would be unforgivable. Think of the public option as single-payer with training wheels.

And if you refuse to participate in any physically demanding sense - such as getting off the couch, then you can't exactly blame Obama for failed health care reform. I'm not sure what its going to take to get through. We need less Kumbaya Democrats and more people willing to get off their thumbs and fight for what they want. What made you think that the fight was over once Obama took the oath of office? So, I'm posting this again in the hope that somebody out there somewhere is listening:

You all might want to consider showing up at the town halls in your areas. Here's the list as posted on the Conservatives for Patients Rights website: http://www.cprights.org/townhalls.php (verify before attending).

Or you can play armchair activist and sit around griping about what weasels the bad old Republicans are... and let them win this fight because... well... we're just too intellectual to actually DO anything about this business. And besides we don't really want to mess up our outfits.

Brian Buetler on TPM: "Late update: By what must be a complete coincidence, CPR's website contains a list of the same town hall forums on its website, "provided as a resource for our visitors." It also contains a separate page, where the group hosts videos of the same town hall disruptions which, behind the scenes, it's doing whatever it can to encourage".

Progressives might ougtta start thinking about what to do about the Republicans' latest strategy of shouting down health care reform town hall meetings. Ignoring them isn't gonna cut it. Playing "we're better than thou" isn't going to resolve matters either.

Now, I'm not suggesting that the fiasco should culminate in a knock down, drag out, but I AM suggesting that "team blue" show up in force in order to make it abundantly clear to "team red" that disruptions of the proceedings will not be tolerated. Somebody needs to tell these howling baboons to shut the hell up. I volunteer.
