The Political Equivalent of a Double-Dog Dare

"Holy Cow!" says Rubin of MoveOn.org in his latest email. I couldn't have said it better myself. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and recalcitrant blue dogs have drawn their line in the sand on health care reform. Then along comes MoveOn and ups the ante: Oh yeah? Well, we double-dog dare ya.

From Justin Rubin of MoveOn.org in an email dated Nov. 3, 2009:

Yesterday, we asked MoveOn members how much they'd contribute to a primary challenge against any Democratic senator who helps Republicans block an up-or-down vote on health care reform [or an Independent Joe Lieberman who proclaims he'll join a Republican filibuster].

[Holy Cow!] Together, we've pledged an astounding $2 million in less than 24 hours!

It's a clear sign of how angry progressives would be at any Democrat [or Joe Lieberman] who helps filibuster reform.

The larger the war chest we can offer a potential challenger, the stronger the signal we'll send to conservative Democrats [or Joe Lieberman]. So we're setting a huge new goal: $3 million in total pledges by the end of the week. That's plenty to launch a serious primary challenge.

Here's a bit more on how the pledge works from yesterday's email:

You tell us how much you'd give. Then, we make sure the media, Senate leadership, and conservative Democrats [and Joe Lieberman] know just how many of us are willing to support a challenge against anyone who blocks reform. Hopefully, none of them actually do it, and health care gets an up-or-down vote.

But if the nightmare scenario happens, we'll encourage viable primary challengers to come forward, and if they do, make sure all of us who've pledged have a chance to support them. In other words, potential primary challengers will know there's a huge group of Americans who are ready to help. And conservative members of the Democratic Caucus will too.

The Health Care Accountability Pledge is off to an awesome start.  Can you help reach our $3 million goal by pledging at this link?

Suddenly, I started feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. I smiled, I nodded, I pledged. It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood. With a click of the mouse, you, too, can experience that snuggly feeling.  Won't ya join me, neighbor?

LOL, Ripper!

Note: Hate to do this, but am recommending my own post to get ahead of the spam on the recommended reader blog roll... my apologies in advance. Suspect that we've been dumped from TPM's front page due to the spam content showing up there.

Others may have already, but I did email Josh today asking about it, and mentioned a couple possibilities that Cafe guest bloggers and Recommended Reader posts are gone if it's his decision. I also asked that he let us know what's happening at the CAfe. I haven't received a response, but then I'v sent him some hints and links on issues that he's posted subsequently, and haven't heard from him on those, either. He must be busy.
