While we're all focused on health care, tax haven reform gets shelved

Here is some truly disturbing news. The Obama administration, which came into office pledging to end the endless deferral of corporate income tax on income not repatriated to the US, has now quietly given up on this.

Why is this important? First, tax deferral costs an estimated $20 billion a year to the Federal treasury. $200 billion over 10 years is more than 20% of the cost of the health care bill.

Second, deferral means that the money stays overseas and creates jobs abroad rather than creating jobs in the US.

One more broken promise. This just stinks.

Here's a link to the original Wall Street Journal story (sub req'd). We've got to put pressure on the admin to make sure they return to this issue next year as the article intimates.

Why? Aren't the companies already paying taxes to the foreign country where they're operating? Why do they have to pay twice?

Do you want foreign businesses to continue opening up plants and hiring people here in the US?

Unemployment is a huge problem right now and we shouldn't be doing things to make it worse.

I recognize people really dislike rich people not paying tax on all their or a company's income. But why on earth does the United States think it has the right to tax activities that occur outside its jurisdiction?
