Keeping Obama's Seat
It seems as if we're beginning to worry about losing Obama's senate seat. An article about this is at the top of TPM Election Central right now. I don't know how likely it is but I will say this: if Obama campaigns for the democratic nominee, he or she will win. I don't know if he'll decide he has time or if he is not as confident in this outcome as I am and won't want to risk being embarrased, so I have no idea what the chances are that he will. But seriously folks, speaking as an Illinoisian, if he campaigns here we will vote for his candidate.

The constitution says the gov picks. Law is law. Now the GOP - typical - believes they can run roughshod over the law because of 'circumstances' - but the circumstance has a solution - impeach and put in the Lt. Governor Pat Quinn.

Your point is well taken, though I suspect Obama will be busy doing other things during the special election and may not have much time to devote campaigning.
Lisa Madigan has innoculated herself from the Blago virus and would be an excellent choice, if she wants Washington rather than Springfield.
Schakowsky would be another good choice - I don't believe she has any ties to the gov either.
Jesse Jackson Jr. probably got screwed in all of this, since he'd be a good candidate and probably didn't do anything wrong, but just being NEAR Blago is unhealthy, as if he's radioactive.

I wouldn't get excited about a GOP poll that asked loaded questions like "would you likely vote for someone who endorsed Blago" unless they also asked "would you likely vote for someone who endorsed George Ryan" and got a positive response. And name one IL Republican who looks like he or she could win a senate race. I can't think of one.
The longer this goes on without a indictment from Fitzgerald the worse he looks and the better Blago looks, however marginally. Nothing's gonna save Blago's rep but now that the IL SC has refused to hear Lisa Madidgan's request to remove him as too disabled to govern it looks like impeachment or an indictment that forces him to step down is the only answer.

C'mon - even Obama said that a special election was the most just answer. Don't make this a partisan issue. Anyone appointed would have such a political scarlet letter on their chest that they'd be totally ineffective. Why can't the constitution be amended?

A special election will cost my state tens of millions of taxpayer dollars. We already can't balance the budget and now the economy has tanked. No thanks.
