Cheney: evil or stupid?
I hear Cheney wants more torture memo's released so that americans can see the whole picture. My guess is that more of the picture would be even more disgusting, in addition if this information gained from torture really prevented some catostrophic attack, I am sure Dick and George would have bragged about it through Robert Novak or some other friendly source.
So what is Cheney up to? I am starting to think that in his mind he believes that 9/11 could not have been prevented, at least not by following the eneva Convention.. Although Richard Clark seems to think otherwise and certain memos before the attacks also seem to contradict that view. But if you were Dick Cheney and your incompetence led to thousands of deaths you might go to great lengths to pretend that your mistake was unavoidable. Sure, if Cheney had not been so busy with his energy task force, and George Bush had not been so concerned with getting in a morning run, 9/11 may not have happened. But for Cheney the onl way to prevent 9/11 was to torture random Arabs and other Muslims as well.
I guess I am arguing that Cheney was stupid, and letting 9/11 happen made him evil.

Is this a trick question?

Dick "5 deferments" Cheney stupid? Not a chance.
Evil? Fits better. A product of a culture of privilege and immunity from personal responsibility; is that evil?

I think that it's pretty fair to say that he is both evil and stupid. Cunning? Sure? Thoughtful in any significant way? Hell, no. He's too cocksure of himself to be thoughtful.
His biggest secret is that his birth certificate doesn't say "Richard" it says "DICK!". He's direct proof that willful ignorance coupled with stubborness (or hackneyed ideology) is deadly.

He's not stupid, he's paranoid. The paranoia is, I suspect, the root of his particular evil.

I just think it's great that Darth Vader -- favorability ratings: 15%!!! -- comes out and represents the Republicans.
Keep mouthing off, Dark Lord, and take the GOP along with you to your dark cold grave!

What matters is the outcome. If I act in good faith but I'm a dumbass and cause harm it doesn't make a lot of difference to those who are harmed what my intentions were. With someone we might think of as 'bad' what usually resolves, in the long term, is harm to everyone including that 'bad' person. So bad and stupid are functionally equivalent.

If one suffers harm to self out of good intention, and fails to learn from that experience, and repeats the act, it is stupid or perhaps a minor mental defect, or the person is a Democrat. If one causes harm to others repeatedly and with no remorse or acceptance of responsibility for those acts, It is evil or perhaps a sociopathic disorder, or the person is a republican.
