I really could care less about Bybee's reasoning for his supporting torture acts...

It is not relevant, as far as I can see. If it were, attorneys would have a case to plead for murder, rape, incest, poisoning enmass, etc. The fact is, and always has been, that historically and LEGALLY with much precedence, waterboarding and other acts used during the Bush administration... whether condoned by attorneys or not... has been banned for generations and thos not abiding by these laws and treaties have been tried and punished.

The only question remaining is this: Have we, the United States of America, decided that now that there are no equals... have we decided to just throw away any rules and laws which do not exempt us from accountability... yet continue to make sure our subjects ... I mean other countries... continue to abide by these same laws and treaties?

If so, we are doomed to soon give up our freedom and follow the lead of many historic nations which have decided to follow the same slope downward...

Of course, one of the major differences between today and history is that those older nations were not privy to 10,000 nuclear bombs... If they had been, we most likely would have never become a free nation...

It is on a rare occasion that I have found myself supporting former
president George Bush, but now that he is gone, I have found one subject
which he and I can wholeheartedly agree. It is this:

THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary
June 26, 2003

STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT

United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

Today, on the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of
Torture, the United States declares its strong solidarity with torture
victims across the world. Torture anywhere is an affront to human dignity
everywhere. We are committed to building a world where human rights are
respected and protected by the rule of law.

Freedom from torture is an inalienable human right. The Convention Against
Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment, ratified by the
United States and more than 130 other countries since 1984, forbids
governments from deliberately inflicting severe physical or mental pain or
suffering on those within their custody or control. Yet torture continues
to be practiced around the world by rogue regimes whose cruel methods
match their determination to crush the human spirit. Beating, burning,
rape, and electric shock are some of the grisly tools such regimes use to
terrorize their own citizens. These despicable crimes cannot be tolerated
by a world committed to justice....
The United States is committed to the world-wide elimination of torture
and we are leading this fight by example. I call on all governments to
join with the United States and the community of law-abiding nations in
prohibiting, investigating, and prosecuting all acts of torture and in
undertaking to prevent other cruel and unusual punishment. I call on all
nations to speak out against torture in all its forms and to make ending
torture an essential part of their diplomacy. I further urge governments
to join America and others in supporting torture victims' treatment
centers, contributing to the UN Fund for the Victims of Torture, and
supporting the efforts of non-governmental organizations to end torture
and assist its victims.

No people, no matter where they reside, should have to live in fear of
their own government. Nowhere should the midnight knock foreshadow a
nightmare of state-commissioned crime. The suffering of torture victims
must end, and the United States calls on all governments to assume this
great mission.

"The state of California sued Wells Fargo today"

Notice that more and more, states are suing and collecting money which used to be collected by the actual victims...

Case in point: You used to be able to sue telemarketers who continued calling after warnings not to. Now, however, your only recourse is to notify the do not call line... then continue getting calls because those in charge are doing nothing... until you see a notice that the government has sued a telemarketer or two. The folks who were harassed, however, can no longer be compensated.

Just an observation, but don't the regulations put forth by the Bush administration (and all those supporting enhanced interrogation) state that the acts would not be torture if they fell short of causing major organ damage?

If so, I believe it would have been perfectly legal and moral to crucify Jesus (probably upside down while pouring water in his mouth and nose)... as long as the crucifixion was halted before he died....

Looks as though the Christian Right has come full circle, hasn't it...
