Not For Profit Health Care
I'm going to start by providing an example of what happens when profit isn't the goal in a service business. My father worked with NATO during his time in the US Navy and there is a facility on the Norfolk Naval base which is managed by NATO; this "mess hall" of this facility is run as a service to NATO officers and the pricing reflects only costs and labor. I had the pleasure of eating lunch there with my father on several occasions and here is a simple summary:
So think about that when Republicans and Health Care Industry talking heads talk about the cost of public health care. If I'm paying a few thousand dollars a year for just my portion of my insurance premium; how much cheaper would it be if profit was taken out of the equasion and insurance was managed for everyone as a service. My taxes would probably have to increase of course; but would they increase more than what I'm paying today premiums?
That is how I think we should be talking about Health Care; how much would it cost each family in taxes verses paying their current premiums.
- Great Service
- Very Good Food
- Total Bill for two sandwiches, fries and 2 draft beers about $3.50
- Great Service Again
- Excellent Food including Prime Rib, Salmon, Wine & Champagne
- Cost per Person about $19.00

So, what's the thought of health care run by competing non-profit organizations (like a recent proposal) vs. the government? What are the barriers to, say, health-care co-ops?

I'm not opposed to the idea; but the question is why? It it because we as Americans are idealogically opposed to the government running it that we just can't get over that element? I'm not against this idea and I guess if we can get health care insurance out of profit business; that will be a good start.
Honestly I just want Obama to go out and explain in simple financial terms something like: "you are paying $4,000 a year for insurance premiums and your employer is paying another $8,000... with a full public program your cost per house hold in terms of tax increase would be about $2,500" or something like that.
Of course I'm using made up numbers but we are idealogically opposed to a tax increase but what if that tax increase is less than what we pay currently for our coverage privately... that equals savings and we are not idealogically opposed to saving ourselves some money. I hope that they actually make a logical case for it financially, not just "we can't leave the poor uninsured behind"; no we do do something for everyone because we are drowning in health care premiums and we have to just pray that we don't end up paying our 20% of some horrible illness or injury!
