Identity Politics in Brooklyn
Much has been written on this site about the dilemma of identity politics versus a more over-arching vision faced by the Dems if they are to get themselves back into power in Congress and the White House. As today's New York Times highlights on its front page, this dilemma is being played out in the 11th Congressional District in Brooklyn, where retiring Congressman Major Owens' seat is up for grabs and three African-American candidates (including Owens' son) and one White are vying for the seat. Whoever wins will influence not only the outcome of the NY congressional delegation, but how Democratic Party politics continues to unfold in New York City, and perhaps in other national urban centers.
