Sorry, Tena, it's another Joe Lieberman thread. First, I'm not quite sure what Lieberman enrages me so much, except that I dislike self-serving weasels. That said, I guess it is more important to Obama to demonstrate that he is generous and open than to engage in political payback. I think some of you are reading too much into this, though, in the sense that Obama will cut Joe off at the knees later. I think that's wishful thinking.

When I read the statement from Obama, I think it gives room for the caucus to strip Joe of his committee chairmanship, but whether that's what they will do is anybody's guess. I'd certainly like to see Holy Joe overseeing the committee on speedbumps, but I'm guessing he's going to keep his spot.

I'm willing to assume that the president-elect has bigger fish to fry than Joe Lieberman and that the political calculation that's been made -- better to appear magnanimous than to get payback -- is the right one at the moment; but I think Lieberman will betray Obama's trust and generosity before the year is out. What happens then?

And my God I'm listening right now to the NPR crew whineing already that Obama did not have this news conference "24 or 48 hours earlier" and then going on about how stingy Obama has been with the press. It's all about them, of course. "This doesn't bode well... blah blah blah." I mean, wtf?

Is this true? I don't think it's likely that the Dems will lose majorities in the House & Senate in 2010. Probably natural for those majorities to be reduced, but unless this administration screws up royally it is quite likely that Obama will have functioning majorities throughout his first term.

Rice superior to Kerry? I don't think so. Kerry may not be the ideal candidate, but Rice, for reasons already stated, along with the fact that she went supinely along with the Iraq war, is completely unacceptable.

And can't they find someone other than Larry Summers for Treasury, who still has the stink of all that deregulatory garbage clinging to him?

Agree with you mphillip, a lot of older people will tell you they know who they are supporting but simply won't say who it is. I think there are about half a dozen actual undecideds still out there in the country and that half of them are simply not going to vote.

I've been making calls this morning into Ohio, mostly leaving messages because people aren't home so I', going to wait a bit until this afternoon and go back to calling. One weird thing was that the few people I did reach -- ALL OF THEM OLDER, WHICH IS TO SAY, MY AGE -- said they knew who they were supporting but wouldn't tell me who it was.

I'm pretty confident about the election but need to keep busy doing something active & since I live in NY state, that has to be making calls. I'm old enough to have voted for McGovern, but this is by far the most important election of my life. We have an opportunity to bring the country back from the brink and we simply can't fail.

really? Is there any evidence of this? Not in my neck of the woods. I haven't he4ard even anecdotal evidence that O's supporters are going to stay home. Quite the opposite, in fact.

You must be kidding. Every board I read people are warning against complacency. People are nervous as cats in a thunder storm, not taking anything for granted. All I see is the occasional concern troll. The best antidote to your fear is to make another donation to the campaign, or go to the Obama website and get some numbers to call, or go door to door.

I kept wondering why Obama didn't turn to McCain the other night and say, quietly, "People might be interested in your friendship with convicted felon G. Gordon Liddy." I guess Obama has decided that he's not going to go down that road, but it's nice to have Letterman make the connection. I wonder if anybody in the MSM will pick it up.
