Prop 8 donors will be public

Reported in the LA Times
A federal judge Thursday denied a request by Proposition 8 supporters to withhold disclosing any more names and addresses of donors who supported the campaign for the state's ban on same-sex marriage. Yes on 8 campaign officials had challenged the constitutionality of the state's Political Reform Act, saying that people who gave money were being harassed and that some received death threats. ....

A judge disagreed, clearing the way for the donors who made contributions in the last two weeks before the election to be made public Monday, the next filing date
Part of their fear is that they'll end up on the Prop 8 donor map. As my mother would say, if you don't want people to know you did something, that's a clue that maybe you shouldn't have done it.

Of course, the lists for donations AGAINST prop 8 are just as public. But the opponents of Prop8 aren't clamoring to hide them. We aren't ashamed of supporting equality. Indeed, the Pro-Prop8 folks led the way on threats against political opponents.

As reported in the SF Chronicle back in October,
Leaders of the campaign to outlaw same-sex marriage in California are warning businesses that have given money to the state's largest gay rights group they will be publicly identified as opponents of traditional unions unless they contribute to the gay marriage ban, too. ...

"Make a donation of a like amount to ProtectMarriage.com which will help us correct this error," reads the letter. "Were you to elect not to donate comparably, it would be a clear indication that you are in opposition to traditional marriage. ...

The names of any companies and organizations that choose not to donate in like manner to ProtectMarriage.com but have given to Equality California will be published."
The letters were signed by the campaign chairman, the executive director of the California Catholic Conference, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; and the lawyer for the Yes-on-8 campaign.

The recipients of those letters didn't yield. Instead, they published them. They weren't ashamed of supporting equality, so the attempt to blackmail them fizzled.

So, as the Pro-8 folks complain that we know who they are, they should reflect on that other old saying of Mom's... "Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you".

This is delicious news, IT. Karma! :)

Lots of car key scratching in Church parking lots out there. I wish the entire donor list would be made public.

It just cost $50 for a conceal carry license. $20 will buy all the ammo anyone would want to carry. $200 will buy enough revolver to take down six deviates before reloading.

The solution is simple. Shoot enough of those vandalistic deviates, and they'll quit scratching up them cars.

When you say:

As my mother would say, if you don't want people to know you did something, that's a clue that maybe you shouldn't have done it.

your mother was very wrong. For starters, it's the old, ill conceived argument against privacy. Moreover, discrimination and focused fighting works both ways. Wait until those who donated against Prop 8 get listed.

The time to do something was before the vote -- when the East Coast gay population was lukewarm about donating. Now it will be twice as hard to sort things out.

"As my mother would say, if you don't want people to know you did something, that's a clue that maybe you shouldn't have done it."

Exactly. And so I am certain that you were outraged by the court decision that forced the website that listed home addresses for abortion providers to be closed down.

I think that that website should be put back up so that abortion providers' names and home addresses and telephone numbers are all made public. After all, if they aren't ashamed of what they do, why shouldn't their information be public?

Let's be claer:

The donor lists are available for BOTH pro and con. Search the SF Chronicle Website for the link. Or the CA state site. It's only the pro-8 folks complaining.

I ve got know problem with people knowing I donated against H8.

I deplore violence and vandalism. But if you vote against me, I want to know: because I will choose not to do business with you. I'm sure you'll be happier without my gay dollars.

Read the post. The pro-H8 tried to blackmail anti-8 folks before the election.

Another old saying:
turnabout is fair play.

When all's said and done, this is constitutionally enshrined rights issue.

The power of the government should be brought to bear on those organized and contributing to the violation of those rights. This was done in the 70's to some KKK like organizations. They were simply sued out of existence.

The car key scratching in church parking lots, the shouting of vulgar obscenities at Suncay School children and other acts of harassment aimed at supporters of prop 8 constitute violations of constitutional protections the Churches enjoy.

California’s Christian Churches should file class action suits against not only the GBLT and other perversion of sex organizations involved, but individuals making up donor lists supporting efforts to defeat Prop 8. The churches should seek and be granted impossibly large monetary damages which would permanently bankrupt not only all GBLT like organizations, but also the individuals promoting efforts to defeat of prop 8.

This is the best way to permanently wipe this filth, this perversion, this Godlessness from the landscape of our gentle society

My wonderful 83 year old Aunt who gave unsparingly to anti prop 8 programs was hospitalized in November after getting hit directly on her temple by a premeditated elbow while she was going to get her hair done on El Paseo Dr.

She was navigating through the Anti Prop 8 rally she attended and volunteered for earlier in the day. This morning I received the call from my cousin that she died from this blow to the head three agonizing months later.

As a previous anti prop 8 volunteer and heavy contributor I grew up in Palm Springs and worked my entire 35 year career for Walter Annenberg. In return for my services made me a wealthy woman. We were the ones who financed the report showing 73% of all blacks voted in favor of this proposition or were none of you reading or listening? Why didn’t I see any anti prop activity in the black sector? The Hispanic sector at 68%? No, you folks had to go and attack the white constituency that voted more in defeating this proposition than any other sector at 48%. Especially out of town anti prop folks who don't know who it is they are dealing with.

Now the fight is on my friends and the fight is with you. I want the Annenberg philanthropy foundation to defer any additional contributions to this cause or issue. I spoke with Lee and we’re getting this ball rolling because unbeknownst to any of you, my Aunt was a best friend to Lee Annenberg.

My checkbook is open and we’ll be writing checks to those constituencies I once loathed. I will do everything in my humble power to not only confirm this vote but to make sure it stays static. You will know who it is I am soon enough and once you do and feel frogish enough to jump at me or mine? Rest assured it will be your last jump in life.
