Great points from many here, Clear and Ripper included. Just wanna share what I've learned about tolerance and respecting the "opposition" while working for Obama.(canvassing in Vegas,phonebanking) For years I've been short, sometimes downright rude with evangelicals of any stripe who might knock on my door on the weekends, sarcastically brushing them off, or refusing to answer the door even when it was open and I was obviously home. Yesterday, a Jehova's Witness, his 2 young daughters and an older gentlemen knocked and at my door, and without thinking about it I stepped out on to the porch and engaged them in conversation. The younger guy gave his "rap" about society and the need for God in our lives and, rather than cut him off I let him have his say and thanked him for his efforts to make the world a better place. Then I spoke of my disdain for the way men have corrupted what's good about the world's religions and used it to divide us. I also expressed my steadfast belief in the separation of church and state and my concerns about the right's erosion of that important Constitutional firewall. Much to my suprise, we were in total agreement on my concerns. I thanked them (?) for allowing me to share my thoughts and wished them well. Then I stepped back inside and realized I'd had a "breakthrough", if you will. I'd internalized Obama's ( and many others, of course ) example of respectful discourse winning more converts than arguing, and actually put it into action before I'd had a chance to revert back to the cynicism and sarcasm I've relied upon for most of my "adult" life. My parents raised me to be respectful of others but somewhere along the way I'd lost sight of that when it comes to religion/politics. I still can't wait to see "Religilous", but I'll check my certitude at the door from now on in favor of respectful, intelligent, discourse. Thanks to Sen Obama's people, the folks I've met while canvassing, and to everyone here at TPM for helping me become a better person. Now, Let's Get Out The Vote!
