Public Option Now Likely - The "Fix" Is In

Congress Wrestles With Yearly Medicare Fee Cuts
A scheduled 20 percent cut may force many doctors to stop seeing Medicare patients.

This "fix" is independant of the current Health Care talks and would be an added expense not offset by other spending cuts, etc... as the above NPR story points out.

Now we see this story coming from the WSJ:
By GREG HITT and JANET ADAMY
WASHINGTON -- The idea of creating a government-run health-insurance plan, once on life support in the Senate, is making a recovery among Democrats writing health-care legislation.
So far, no one is talking about a nationwide Medicare-like plan of the sort sought by many liberals, but several variations short of a national plan are being considered.
One would establish a national plan only if other proposals in the Democrat-led health overhaul fail to expand insurance coverage. Another would create a government plan, but allow states to opt out. Still another would allow states to opt in to a government plan, or experiment with their own plans. Prospects are growing that one of these variations -- or a blend of them -- will make it into the final Senate bill.
"This issue is alive, and we're looking at it," said Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D., Mont.).

Don't be surprised to find the AMA supporting the Public Option as soon as this "Fix" is in.

Well this sounds hopeful.

yeah, I'm getting a bit more optimistic too. Interesting juxtaposition with the Medicare fee issue. Not quite sure how they interrelate. Is the idea that Congress will endanger the solvency of Medicare even more in the interests of getting the AMA on board for the Public Option? A quid pro quo of sorts.
I didn't realize the AMA were so craven, actually. If they don't want to accept Medicare patients, well that's their choice. If too few doctors want to accept Medicare rates, maybe we should start being less protectionist when it comes to medical services. Fees are already well above international standards.

Those who make up Medicare (mostly Seniors) are mighty! Listen to the NPR story... Doctors are telling their patients that they will be dropped in January unless this is fixed.
Then the Seniors lean on the politicians...
The Doctors agree to support a public option if their Medicare payments aren't cut AND they get to keep all their patients.
Seems like "deal" to me.

Of course you know . . .
Five days ago (Oct 20) Pelosi and the "liberals" were spouting that "one alternative" for the public option could be based on, "...pegging doctor reimbursements to Medicare plus 5 percent and hospitals to Medicare rates."
See: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=a4HAMlZ9Xv.Q
And of course the Blue Dogs have been barking a different tune.

So... this makes sense, then, doesn't it?
If they "FIX" the Medicare reimbursement...
AND!!! The doctors get paid the "Fix" PLUS 5% extra for any "Public Option"...
Then the AMA would almost ceratainly get behind the idea.

You've got it . . .
And in addition ... now that Pelosi has pulled the preliminary analysis from the CBO out of the hat that finds "...the reconstituted House proposal to be deficit neutral, and require about $870 billion in new spending, over ten years..." including a robust public option "...pegging doctor reimbursements to Medicare plus 5 percent and hospitals to Medicare rates..." it's really going to cause the barking Blue Dogs to stop yapping and listen up.

CBO finds Dem bill with public option reduces deficit
CNN - Deirdre Walsh - 3 hours ago
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A preliminary estimate from the Congressional Budget Office projects that the House Democrats' health care plan that includes a public option would cost $871 billion over 10 years, according to two Democratic sources.
