Waxman! New Chair of House Energy and Commerce Committee!
Henry Waxman won the first step for his challenge to John Dingell to become the next chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
Dingell's close ties to the auto industry made him a bit suspect on environmental policy. He has caused the committee to drag its feet on climate change; and--after finally introducing a draft bill--the legislation he proposed is extremely weak.
Waxman is a strong advocate for the public interest on environmental policy and his chairmanship will be an asset for President-elect Obama as they pursue an adequate response to emissions reduction.
UPDATE: Josh is reporting Waxman won the support of the caucus. It's done

No offense to Mr. Dingell, but this is an obvious case of somebody remaining in their post too long. Detroit has spent years avoiding and consideration of modernizing and resisting the need to adapt to new climate standards. The companies in question are guilty of course, but so is Mr. Dingell for allowing Detroit to fester on criminal policies for all of these years. Congrats. to Mr. Waxman! We hope that your hard work with the administration will show you all to be true stewards for our environment!
