Ford's action was the ultimate act of political courage of the past half century. He willingly risked - and gave up - the Presidency to do something he knew would be unpopular, but felt was in the best interest of the country. Nixon, he felt, had been destroyed and humiliated.

In this case, the people who put an elected Governor in jail as a political prisoner have not suffered anything.

Once Bush Jr is outta town, it's time to bring Rove and Co before the bar of justice. But it must be done in the most responsible manner. Some folks should face charges. Others most certainly should be disbarred.

There were many unique factors about this election, so I'm not certain anyone can make a universal assertion based on what happened last week.

It's an interesting debate, but it won't be settled until we can statistically determine if people without land lines generally have different experiences and therefore hold different political views than people who have land lines. And there's not enough data yet to know one way or another.

The Senate must decide who to seat (or is it whom?). I remember years ago a Senate election in New Hampshire between Durkin and Wyman that was decided by 10 votes in favor of Democrat Durkin.
Then, in a recount, the state's Republican ballot commissioner called it for Republican Wyman by 2 votes. The Senate rules committee was hopelessly deadlocked, the Republicans filibustered Democrat attempts to seat Durkin. Both men had offices in the Senate, as did the outgoing Senator, Norris Cotton, who agreed to stay on. Finally, when it became apparent there would be no resolution, both men agreed to a revote. The seat was declared vacant.

In September of 1975, buoyed by anti-Watergate sentiment, the ombiblious Mr Durkin won by 27,000 votes, and spent much of the next six years toasting to his good fortune in the Monocle. But his Senate career was ended in 1980 by Warren Rudman, in the Reagan landslide.

Defending herself with the armor of the Lord!

This may seem a bit corny, offensive, or over the top to some folks, but - trust me - it's the only way to defend yourself in Carolina. And it is a nuclear response that has destroyed any hope Mrs Dole had of haning on to her seat.

But this is an argument you don't want to have, and it forces you to rise to the bait of the racists.

They want to turn the argument into a "you see, Blacks can say the 'n word' and we can't. And gays can use the noose and we can't."

You say that's not what you're arguing (and, of course, you're technically correct), but that's what the argument becomes. And suddenly white folks - including white racists - can claim victim status or inequality.

And that argument muddies the water for many people, who then say, "well, that effigy of Obama is bad, but there's one of Palin that those gays out in California put up. It's all politics."

Don't you see? It's an argument you don't want to have. Condemn them both equally and leave it at that. Keep the high ground. Win.

This is a nightmare year for pollsters, because the electorate is so changed it is impossible to build a model with any degree of confidence.

And any survey of early voters that's worth anything MUST be an exit poll. Phone surveys won't cut it, because you miss all the students and others with unlisted numbers or no land line.
And if 60 percent of the early voters in one location are - say - university students, how would you know to skew your telephone model to that fact?

You are right. Pollsters are all over the place on this, because they do not know who to poll this year or how to reach all of those people.
It's more a guessing game than ever.

Teddy my boy,

You seem to mistake the allegedly free market and laissez faire capitalism with the blood and body of Jesus Christ. Sorry, but there ain't nothing divine about the free market.

She can be a bitch. And she can cause such convulsions during corrections as to make democracy and capitalism political impossibilities. Her invisible hand works, but can wield a terrible, swift sword.

Free marketeers now face the sad dilemma that an earlier generation of fools faced in the 1950's. Those were the Communists in the west who - when confronted with the failure and barbarity of Marxism in practice - came to the inescapable truth that their God - Marxism - was dead - or, at least, a fraud.

Truth is, Teddy boy, there aren't unlimited free markets. The major players are too few, too big, and often all-powerful. They span international borders.

And unless governments put restraints on those players, the people of the world are at their mercy - and the mercy of their greed. And events like those of the past month are the harvest of what the unregulated markets have sown.

They "pulled out" of North Dakota after setting up a local organization, because there was no need to do voter registration.

That's because there IS no voter registration for NoDaks. You simply show up on election day, show your ID, and vote. So they put their national people to work elsewhere during registration season. There was no reason to pound the pavement in Lisbon or Mandan or heaven knows where back in August or September.

Now that registration is over most everywhere else, it's time to saturate the Fargo-Moorhead TV market...and bring back folks to help the locals.

If they win Nevada and North Dakota, they don't have to win any of the other red battleground states. It's a terrific insurance policy, and the 50 state strategy means exactly that. You show up and fight in all 50 state. And that way, if an opportunity like NoDak turns up, you can pivot quickly and take advantage.

You all can keep your ludefisk and lefse. But I'll take the three electoral votes. You betcha!
