What Now?
Last night. What a
strange sight. A wide mix of emotions
and ideas and beliefs. Obama took the
stage with an almost odd lack of jubilation.
He seemed measured, heavy even.
The weight of the world is truly upon his shoulders now. The celebrations that exploded from D.C. to
Paris,
What now?
My hope is that come January, President Barack Obama will use the moment the country, and the world, has given him. To be bold. It is not the time to be measured and cautious, two qualities he displays often, and which I admire him for. We face large problems. We require large solutions.
He has promised to usher in a new way for government, with more transparency and greater involvement. Indeed, it has been the pinnacle of his candidacy - "We," rather than "I," "us," rather than "me." This should be a top priority for his first one-hundred days. Open up politics as he has opened up his campaign to allow the citizens of this country to push and work for what they believe in. The wide swath of people who have worked tirelessly for his campaign won't accept any less: they are ready to work; and to push these types of changes 2 years into the future will squander the level of excitement and activism we see at this very moment. If he can do this, he will have a greater power to push through the next bold moves he needs to take. Hard to argue with an army of protesters outside the Capitol building, demanding healthcare.

It'll be interesting to see if he uses the tech setup he's got going now as the door to that type of transparency and involvement.
What happens to barackobama.com after this?

Yeah, I have no idea. But that's a huge networking site already in place for activism and involvement.
I read somewhere, in some opinion column I think, this guy who was writing that the people would be happy if he spent his first term sort of re-righting the sinking ship. I don't think that'll be enough. I think people are going to be expecting results. And quickly.
I have several agendas in mind that I think should be pursued immediately. Some of them will have to slide, but there needs to be some big successes - economic stimulus in particular. Yesterday was a great day, but his critics are ready to jump all over him at the soonest opening. Hell, there's already a movement afoot to impeach him:

Hillary,
What's he going to do?
Probably something like this video from Terry Gilliam's "Time Bandits".
You can watch it here:

If Rahm Emmanuel is his chief of staff, you can count on it.

It'll be interesting to see if the mass of Internet supporters build up behind Obama can find their way to using those same organizational tools to ensure positive support - and/or pressure - is exerted behind an agenda. There'll be lots of voices inside the WH trying to shut that down, keep it controlled, but I'm not sure it'll work. It may take some time, but sooner or later, if the actions are insufficient, I think we'll see it. Though I'm hoping the e-door stays open from Day One.
