When I moved to Oregon in 1987, the state had a tradition of republican senators. At the time, they were the notorious (yet moderate to liberal) Bob Packwood and Mark Hatfield (a man of supreme integrity—one of the only republicans to oppose the Vietnam war and the death penalty due to his catholic faith). Packwood, as some might remember, was forced out by sexual scandal and Hatfield retired. Ron Wyden took one of the seats, and in what many of us thought was shocking at the time, Smith took the other (can't remember which order they went in and who took whose seat). Now, after all these years, the state with the some of the most progressive politics in America has finally gone all blue in its senate delegation. Woo-hoo!

Is 63 million the highest vote count anyone has ever gotten? I think so. As for Clinton's electoral margins, he got those due to Ross Perot taking so many votes from Papa Bush. Clinton never got a popular majority (not even close in '92). Carter was the last Dem to get a popular majority (50.1%). For interest, check out the electoral map that year. Obama's was the best Dem showing in the popular vote since LBJ's landslide (and not coincidentally he won a few states that last voted Dem that year). What a great day today is.

Savannah, GA: I voted absentee six weeks ago, but I rode my bike past the local polling place this morning to see what was up. Even though GA had a big turnout for the primary this year, the line was only 3 or 4 people long before work on that day. Today, at close to 11 am, the line was about 50 people long. That is way more than I have ever seen at one time at this polling station, but nothing like the numbers I am hearing about elsewhere. Perhaps, turnout is not that high due to our massive early voting in this state (over 2 million). I hope people haven't got complacent, though. Or, perhaps we have lot of polling stations. The town is 60% black, and the mayor and other high-ranking city officials are also black, so I doubt there will be any systematic disenfranchisement here. If we take GA, it's game over at 7 PM. Wouldn't that be sweet?
