Republican Women
After watching Linda Chavez testify at the Sotomayor hearing today, I was reminded how down right bitchy women in the Republican party can be. Not all women, but certainly the Conservative movement types - Ann Coulter, Laura Ingram, Michelle Bachmann, Bey Buchannan, Elizabeth Hasselback and yes, Sarah Palin. They were bitter when Republicans were in power and worse when they are out!
Can somebody explain to me what these harpies are so upset about?

C'mon
Sanford, Ensign, Guliani, Gingrich, Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, McConnell, I mean wouldn't you be bitchy if these were the kind of men you had to choose from? Just sayin';)

funny how your "new low" assessments of others don't apply to your high road self
well, not the first time and not the last

Lalo,
The truth is I was trying to use this opportunity to laugh about the sick situation I am aware of and feel completely unempowered to do anything about. We now know that Sanford and Ensign belong to the christian cult 'The Family' and 'fidelity' and 'morality' are not considered important in this self-proclaimed mafia. They apparently swear that 'the Family' takes precedent over their wives and families. And the truth is I don't know how wide spread this mafia is. So 'that' is the context I was coming from in trying to make light of the fact that as far as I am concerned these women have something to 'bitch' about. But unfortunately many of them are messed up enough to go along with this demented crap.
So, if I fell off some pedestal it seemed I was trying to climb on in your eyes... well that was all an illusion.
Yes, I generally am sick of and don't like the lumping of 'republicans', democrats, etc into various demeaning categories. But I thought in this case I was really making a point!

BTW I will not take any character assessment from you seriously based on comments you have made. If this is a 'low' to you so be it. I frankly think you need a bigger hat.

Flag. This post is crap. Sexism is not a relevant argument, no matter which party it's directed at.

Calling somebody like Ann Coulter a bitch is sexism? You must know a different Ann Coulter!

Calling anyone a bitch is not a valid argument. It's just calling someone a name. So what? Is that all you got? If so, go somewhere else.
Meanwhile, here is a transcript of the Chavez statement for those who missed it.

"Bitchy"
"Harpies"
"Bitter"
Blah, blah, blah.
Do we love Coulter, Bachmann et al? Of course not; most of us abhor them.
But please, is it too much trouble to call them out on their errors of fact, or their manipulative spin -- in other words, their actions --without resort to stereotyped characterizations having to do with voice tone????
This makes three such characterizations on TPM is as many weeks:
1) Barbara Boxer allegedly sounded "strident" by asking to be called Senator;
2) Nancy Pelosi was allegedly "testy" with an NPR reporter
3) And now the opposition -- the female opposition - is alleged to sound "bitter" and "bitchy."
DO Y'ALL NOT GET IT?
You are judging women, not by their actions, or their levels of ethics or professional expertise, but instead, by the culturally inculcated archetype that a woman's voice, her tone, is the first and most salient quality that defines her.
Stop it. OK?

Would loveto judge people like Ann Coulter and Laura Ingram on substance. But there seldom is any there. I think fpie hit the nail on the head. Pissin' and moanin' is their gig! And getting in the weeds with them is exactly how they move the conversation from what is really important, to their dog whistle talking points that move far to many of the electorate. I have no problem for callling them out, as the harpie bitches they are!

Obviously pissin' and moanin' is your gig too. I guess that makes you a Republican woman.

Ann Coulter and Laura Ingram are no different than Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity. Call them wrong, call them ignorant, call them derranged. They are all three.
But "bitch" and "harpy" are loaded words. Words that demean the women they are applied to for their crime of being women.
It is not acceptable to demean Hispanic or African American Republicans with loaded words. Why is it acceptable to direct them toward women?

Thanks, Orlando. You summed it up by saying: "....'bitch' and 'harpy' are loaded words. Words that demean the women they are applied to for their crime of being women."

No thank you, for carry the water around here lately. I've been reading, but not jumping into the fray, and you've been taking a beating. I hope you find comfort in the fact that you are right.

Okay, I can agree with that! Certainly my point is not that they are bad because they are women. And perhaps the loaded-word thing does not allow people to see the real point, that they seem to trade on tearing down others! Apologies, wwstaebler, but I'm not liking those wrong, ignorant, derranged women.

Thank you. I agree that they trade on tearing down others and I agree thatm, as a result, they suck.

I am going to go out on a limb as a woman and say that it appears to me that while I understand the cautions against a pattern of subtle stereotyping etc.
There is also apparently this back and forth of moments when our perspectives allow us to use the generalization of 'republicans' this and 'democrats' that etc. and times when our perspectives abhor that we are generalizing and we know that we don't actually intend such a broad context.
And then similarly, I might be extra careful in the terms I use to even describe a black person because I am white and don't want to offend but between many black people 'nigger' is sometimes a completely acceptable word to use but coming from me depending on familiarity it may be considered completely offensive.
I did not take offense at the adjective 'bitchy' why because my daughter just used it two days ago when she was on the phone and she said she was getting off the phone with her because she was being bitchy. I asked her later if there was a problem with her friend and she said 'oh, she was really hot and crabby and she realized it, everything is fine.'
So from some perspective, maybe familiarity, it's okay to say 'why are you so bitchy' and another it's' offensive, demeaning, etc.
I am beginning to think this is a bit like detecting snark, which I am not great at btw, and it may really depend on the perspective one has in expressing something that gets taken differently by different people and their perspectives. I was surprised to scroll down and see that others had taken offense at the word 'bitchy' and other at another moment it might have been me.

I could be wrong but I don't think these are examples of men who were out in the forefront touting family values etc. and judging others for their failures.
