Ted Stevens Scenario

What if:

- Ted Stevens is re-elected to the Senate (seems likely)

- President Bush pardons Ted Stevens on his way out

Seems like this would result in Stevens remaining in his seat.  I can't see the Senate voting to expel him if he has been pardoned (the slate has been wiped clean so there's no basis for expulsion).

This is an interesting way for the corporate wing of the Republican party to keep Sarah Palin from taking the Senate seat and positioning for 2012.

This scenario was brought up at lunch today. I think Bush may pardon Stevens just as a final "fuck you" to America, because he can. Should make you wonder why a President can pardon anyone at all. Is our legal system so broken?

I almost hope Bush does though, so the bad "Bush" taste in America's mouth will linger longer.

I wonder though, is there some chance Palin the Governor will appoint herself Palin the Senator? Not really, since Alaska will have to hold a special election and Palin will not have a chance to appoint anyone.
