Thanks Fred. I particularly liked your post on Writing Well at TPM. As as fellow believer that we need to be less sarcastic, less scathing and more respectful in our political discourse I was getting really concerned there for a moment that the debate on Health Care had descended into a proxy war between those with the loudest voices on both the right and the left. I was moved to write a blog earlier this week on the need for more truly bipartisan, truly respectful discussion of these very serious and complex issues. But as the week ends I am optimistic that if those who are committed to a better way just show up - we will carry the day.

As for my vision of 2010, I realize it is a tad on the rosy side - but we need a clear sense of where we are going and how great it will be on the other side - if we are to continue, day in and day out, to fight the good fight. Beside, look what happened in '34, the last time a midterm election followed on the heels of president saving the country from economic disaster. Never underestimate the tendency of Americans to vote based on their sense of economic security.

OFA does seem a bit passive. There is a build it and they will come quality about it. And the other side is organized along the lines of the Nazis circa 1932 - taking control of the conversation by taking control of the streets. Exactly why I call this a political street fight. We need to go where THEIR people are having THEIR town meetings and give them just as much if not more hell than ours are getting. We can be better behaved but we need to be even more visible.

Excellent analysis! As a fellow poll watcher and part time statistician myself I have been fascinated by Rasmussmen's Index from its first release. Starting from an already skewed polling dataset, he has made the numbers look even worse by weighting the outliers as more important than those in the middle of the distribution. Now that's a neat trick.

An update to all this is that now Rasmussen has added a total Obama approval chart - like the one he had when Bush was president - now that it shows a long term downward trend. But ha-ha - it started ticking back up the week after he posted it!

Good point, Annie. There are a lot of people who have never stopped - who have been writing letters and calling their representatives - and talking up the issues with their friends and colleagues...and you all deserve a note of appreciation for realizing this is a long term process that did not end in November. I am speaking for myself and for those who took the foot off the pedal, took our eyes off the road ahead, maybe even pulled over to the side of the road to watch. Time to rejoin the movement which - as you point out - is already in progress.
