Powell was actually asked in his interview afterwords whether he was still a Republican, and he said, without elaboration, "yes." But like you, I'm left wondering what that means exactly. I'm tempted to say that Republicans have had a stranglehold on "American greatness" and that that's what attracted Powell both to the Republican party of old and to Obama. To Obama's credit, it's a transformational moment of cognitive dissonance for Republicans like Powell who may not yet be ready to shed longstanding identities even if they can see that Obama nevertheless believes in and represents American greatness.

Seashell--Thanks for the LAT poll--very interesting and suggests, as you note, that Americans might reasonably resist the "We're all Ukranians now" line. As for Yushchenko agitating, that's worrisome enough, isn't it? McCain and the right have primed Americans to see Ukraine as faultless victims and lovers of democracy, whatever the precise causus belli. Would Obama then defend Russia? Uncomfortable, no?

Needless to say, the Powell endorsement from this morning, wonderfully, would give Obama more room to maneuver.

Whether Powell endorses or not, it's been weird to see columnists on the right (Novak, Kristol) advancing the notion that Powell would endorse Obama. Strange too that this is a decision subject to this 60% criterion, interesting as that criterion is. When is/was this supposedly crucial 60% mark? This summer, when Novak reported it? Or now?

The 60% Doctrine, btw, is a nice post-facto justification for the UN appearance.
