One of the most puzzling things to me about The Carbon Based industry's lobbying is that we're going to need oil, gas, and coal for a long time, until it runs out probably. None of these businesses is in any immediate danger of shutting down unless it's because we have used all of some particular commodity.

Even if we all drive electric cars and all our electricity is generated by renewable sources, which is highly unlikely to happen any time soon, we still need carbon based resources to produce a great deal of what we see around us from plastics to medicine to building materials, etc. Why isn't it in the petroleum industry's interest, for instance, to spend that money on researching alternative energy rather than lobbying?

I'm a great admirer of Nancy Pelosi and she did an incredible job of shepherding the HC bill through the house. I believe she _could_ have left a large footprint if she had been speaker under a different president - a president who shared her values, which Obama clearly does not. But I don't think anyone connected with this administration will be making big history because the DLC contingent, which includes Obama, his aides and advisers, are too timid. Either too timid or too conservative.

Personally, I believe that our survival as a species depends on morality. Without it we would not have been around this long.

But and this is a big but: I heard a fascinating program on NPR recently. A description from the NPR web site:
Scientists have found a surprising link between magnets and morality. A person's moral judgments can be changed almost instantly by delivering a magnetic pulse to an area of the brain near the right ear, according to a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

I have this fantasy about sneaking up on a right winger with a magnet to see if it works. ;)

I know we're all dispirited, but every vote and every individual vote does count. That's how we did it in '08, one by one. But we can all do our bit.
