Strategic Arms Reduction and Vanunu - Israel's Prisoner of Conscience for now 24 years

Israel gave concrete assurances to John F Kennedy in 1963 that it was not, and would not, be involved in building nuclear weapons at Dimona. Those assurances were never in accordance with the facts and the covert Israeli nuclear weapons program has been continuously in existence ever since.
Now that it is proven that Mordechai Vanunu was telling the truth about Israel’s dangerously clandestine nuclear weapons program, in 1986, and was indeed acting out of real concern for global security, is it not now time that an embargo is placed on all trade with the Israeli state until this brave man is released from detention and free from the continuous intimidation of the security police.
A period of twenty four years of intimidation and imprisonment for informing a disbelieving world of Israel’s deception is a cruel and unusual punishment that is incompatible with a claimed democratic state.
It is also way beyond time that the US government ceases supporting the ploy of nuclear ambiguity that allows Israel to continue treating the nations of the free world, who are signatories to nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament, as idiots. Unfortunately, that includes the administration of President Obama.

There is, of course, an extremely important issue that has been raised by the illegal building permit fiasco in Israel’s Knesset: that is, whose finger is on the nuclear button that can deploy the world’s largest, secret nuclear arsenal?

Is it Binyamin Netanyahu, the nominal leader of the fragile Likud coalition or is it the leader of Shas, the fundamentalist-religious, coalition faction?

Clearly, Netanyahu, by his own admission, is completely ignorant of the actions of the Shas-controlled Interior Ministry, a situation which, if it were not so serious, would be comic.

This massive, nuclear stockpile which is completely outside the inspection of the United Nations’ IAEA is under the control of whom, exactly? The Israeli Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister, the Interior Minister, The Health Minister, the Housing Minister, Likud, Kadima, Israel’s entrant to the European Song Contest, whom?

Unfortunately, it is very far from being a joke, for as there is no obvious control over these hundreds of nuclear warheads, they could, one day, impact all our lives. And the US, having colluded in this travesty, now finds itself powerless to intervene and at the mercy of its own schizoid child that has been given dangerous, adult toys.

It is becoming boring to have to reiterate that the agenda of the Likud government is for a Greater Israel that includes every centimeter of land between Eilat and the Golan Heights and between the Mediterranean and the Jordan river.

They are working assiduously to that end by building 'facts on the ground' on the premise that the international community are a bunch of nudnicks who can be manipulated at will to their desired political agenda. That includes the export/transfer/expulsion (call it by whatever euphemism you want)of the indigenous Arab population to a neighboring states(s).

I wonder if they're correct in their assumption?

'disproportionate power' - now there's a thought ..

Would you say that the Israel lobby which is acknowledged to be the most powerful political lobby in the US, wields power that is proportionate to its membership?

I seem to recall from somewhere that it claims a membership of less than one quarter of one per cent of the total electorate.

Or do you claim that whilst it may be disproportionate, it is nevertheless democratic?

Virtually all United States citizens are American, - regardless of their country of origin or religious affiliation.

Israeli citizens, OTOH, born outside of Israel, often hold two passports, an Israeli one and another from their country of origin. So they are American, British, French, Moroccan or Iranian Israelis depending on their travel plans or other considerations. The only commonality is their claimed religious affiliation.

On that basis, and for legal purposes, Israel is a religious state. Yet, in fact, it is a secular, political entity the majority of whose citizens rarely if ever set foot in a synagogue or even adhere to kosher dietary laws.

In addition, there are many thousands of Israeli citizens who prefer not to live in Israel, and whose allegiances lie .... where?
