Gitmo Detainees in Michigan --Part IV

Even though I realize this is going to disappear off the blog roll before sunrise because I don't know how to game the system, I'm gonna put it up anyhow.
Apparently, the townhall meeting in Standish, MI about the transferring of Gitmo detainees to a soon-to-be-closed facility there garnered some high profile attention (WaPo, ABC World News Tonight, Fox News) and I am going to borrow heavily from the write-up in the Washington Post.  Well, maybe I won't borrow heavily, but instead will suggest reading the article itself.  It's good and pretty thorough.

After sifting through the interwebs for a good part of the day, it looks like my suspicion about this meeting being more about politics than resolving genuine concerns of the locals wasn't too far off the mark. As for the fear-mongering I mentioned at the bottom of my previous post,  below are some examples of what you would have been treated to had you been in attendance.

First of all, the meeting was arranged by a man named Dave Munson with assistance from a group called ACT! for America.  Loonwatch.com (hahaha...loonwatch...hahahaha  That name tickles me.) Anyway, they have some fun with 'em here. You can read from Dave Munson himself here.

The panel of invited speakers included:

Pete Hoekstra --  Link here. (Oh, yeah...he's got it all over his little dot gov page already.)

Debra Burlingame -- founder of 9/11 Families for a Safe and Strong America
Her money quote:
"These detainees aren't like ordinary criminals. Those hardened criminals [in the Standish prison] do not have global jihadi networks," said Burlingame, whose brother was a pilot on the flight that crashed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001. She predicted that detainees would assault and throw bodily fluids at guards, plan attacks on tourists and attract suicide bombers to local gatherings. "What you do here, make no mistake, they are watching in Washington," Burlingame said. "And if we can kill it here, maybe we can kill it everywhere and keep Guantanamo open."
(Geeze, and I thought I was a gasbag.)

David Littman -- Mackinaw Center for Public Policy  ( This is a Libertarian think tank and will most likely be bankrolling Hoekstra's bid for Governor as they did for the last Republican candidate, Dick DeVos. who is now on their board.)  Apparently, he didn't say much.  Then again, he doesn't have to...he's the money man.  Maybe he let that do the talkin' for him.

Tom Kerrins -- Michigan Corrections Organization (and probably the only one not there for a photo op)  But, he did get off a fabulous scare-em-while-you-got-em quote:
"They [the Gitmo detainees] are enemy combatants," said Tom Kerrins, chief steward for the union representing prison workers at Standish Maximum Correctional Facility. "They want to kill you, they want to kill me, they want to kill our families."
(So, the prison workers do have union representation, but if I was this Kerrins fella, I'd be working harder to find retraining for the guards able to meet federal requirements and seeing where I could put the ones that don't back into the system instead of scaring the shit out of citizens at the meeting.  But then, that's just me.)

Jim Barcia -- Michigan state Sen.(D-Bay City)  (At least he's from the area.) (And sane.)  Finally, Barcia gives the quote that totally grinds my ass, not because of who said it, but because once again, the loudmouth yellers that deny everyone's right to know at these townhall meetings have snuffed out the other voices that should be able to present their views also.
Barcia said federal officials who toured the prison Aug. 13 indicated they would not send detainees to Standish in the face of intense local opposition. He said legislators and locals who are open to the idea skipped the town hall because "they probably thought they'd be subject to the same behavior we've seen at many town hall meetings about health-care reform."
"they probably thought they'd be subject to the same behavior we've seen at many town hall meetings about health-care reform"

Doesn't that just piss you off?
It did me.
More to come cuz I ain't done yet.
I want to address the genuine concerns of the locals, pro and con, without them having been whipped up by the politicians and other fear mongers.  The real people.  Might take a day or two.  Maybe three.

I can't believe how much outrageous and 'deliberate' lying is coming from the 'loon'atic fringe unchallenged. They are getting away with outrageous stuff. Where are the real checks and balances? What the *f* is going on?

user-pic

I don't know what's going on either, Sink. Except mebbe politics as usual?

user-pic

Good grief!

Since when are Americans ascared of anyone? Oh.... maybe about he time we started taking our shoes off at Airports? Yeah we were scared of some bumbling idiot that tried (and failed) to light a fargin' match! Ya think that's anything approaching sanity? I mean, this is crazy crap and we just let it go on and on, and it gets crazier exponentially, seems to me.

Are we sniveling, yellow-bellied, (gulp) er, chickens? Or are we Americans? We sent our sons and daughter, our KIDS in the military to deal with these guys. I can't imagine Rosie the Riveter being frightened of Herr SS dickhead German Torturer Dude. My thinking is she'd be awful proud to be keeping him away from our boys out there in harms way. DOING HER PART.

When did being a coward become part of the American character? When are these people gonna grow a spine? They ought to be ashamed of themselves, being afraid of these terrorists. They ain't anything but common thugs.

It's about time we held up our heads again, instead of allowing cowards and liars to drive the conversation. Shame on you, Ms. Burlingame. I highly doubt your brother would appreciate you turning tail and scuttling off, whining about "hardened criminals." You do a disservice to his memory and to your country.

Oh, and who paid for you to be there?

Stuff and nonsense. Put your shoes on, fer chrissakes! Wipe that spittle off your chin! Stand up for your country!

Who are these people?

user-pic

When did being a coward become part of the American character?

That's what I want to know too.

user-pic

Oh, Bwak. What you said. Some good points there and a few I had in mind as well, especially the one you asked Ms. Burlingame..."Who paid for you to be there?"....because I was thinking that same question while reading all the articles...."So, your brother was a pilot aboard one of the doomed 9/11 flights and now you are profiting from his death and memory?" It happens too often in this day and age...in this society...and it makes me very sad.

Yes, where is our backbone?

Where did it go?

We used to have one.

It must still be around here someplace.

Innit?

Flower,

I am finding your 'series' about this issue more riveting than the finale of a who-dun-it! (Maybe 'cuz we already know the who!?!)

I can hardly wait for the next installment.

I must reiterate, I think you should bundle all your posts on this together and send it out to MSM, as well as state media and Hoekstra's opponents! And I couldn't be more serious.

Terrific. Thanks. REC'D!

Migwetch, Auntie!

After the next post I think I might take your advice and send the boxed set *wink* out to one or two other venues. It looks like this series is shaping up to be something more than just a local gripe. I mean, Standish Max is not the only facility in the running...it's just the one getting the most attention right now and after the hoopla dies down here, it will be repeated at every other place in the country until the federal authorities make their decision.

Then, there is that whole movement of not wanting the Gitmo detainees on U.S. turf at all. No terrrrsts on our soil! Hahahahahahahaha. Apparently they have no idea we already do.

user-pic

Flowerchild, this is a great series. I hope you do follow through on getting the boxed set out to other venues. It is posts like this that I really hate see getting knock off by the spam posts.

user-pic

Thank you very much for the encouragement, bluesplashy. I will be following through and posting until it is resolved one way or the other. :o)

user-pic

nice post, Flower. You have a focus on this that is refreshing, especially in the current short attention span blog environment. I think a lot of the sites get swept up in the chum of the moment and in a way, many blog sites have lost their sea legs, their independent awareness. News is fragmented and mired in gossip.
Every minute someone publishes something about what a Senator may or may not have said about health care--a snippet. I posted about incremental news.

It's one thing to stay on top of things, but it's an entirely different matter to become obsessed with smaller and more often than not, empty narratives.

Stick with this Gitmo detainees focus.

I think it is more meaningful than people realize.

user-pic

Migwetch (thanks), gary.

Yep. I think it's more meaningful than what is on the surface, too. And much bigger than what I first thought. I mean, it's more than a NIMBY thing or a job opportunity thing. It's not just local. This is a situation that encompasses the entire country whether the entire country wishes to be aware of it or not. The Gitmo detainees exist. There is no getting around it. We caused the situation to be and we need to put on our big boy pants and take care of it. I don't like it. Nobody likes it, but it's got to be taken care of in spite of all the political crapola.

And, besides the politics, there's a whole philosophical side to it that wasn't obvious at first.

Yeah, there's more to it than meets the eye.

user-pic

See, you did not disappear. you got 24

Do these idiots have any idea how tough street gangs are in Detroit, La, Chicago, Boston for chrissakes!!!

What a bunch of idiots.

user-pic

24 by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin. :o) I ain't complainin', I'll take it, but I sure hope the blog post/recommend system takes a cure of some kind.

I do believe Debra Burlingame was talking out of her ass. I know a couple of prison guards, one worked on a death row for many years, and I heard from him about the poo flinging and getting spit and urinated on. It was sometimes a daily event, part of the job. No one is saying it isn't going to be dangerous. What infuriates me is that fear is being used to manipulate the regular citizens. That entire meeting was codswallop...no one went away with answers to the real questions they came with. They were used by the politicians and the gamers.

And you are right about the incarcerated gang members...honestly? I'd be more concerned about the hardcore California inmates that almost were exported here than the Gitmo detainees.

Attract suicide bombers to local gatherings? Ha. What local gatherings? Is she talking about the Pinconning Cheese Festival the next town over?
Holy crap.

I think I'm rambling. I'm tired. Thanks for stopping by, Mr. Day.

Say goodnight, Dick.

;o)
