Gitmo Detainees Headed to Michigan Prison?~Update
Previous blog here. Referring to the misquote: "Things come and go so quickly here." Well, it looks like 'Things' have come back 'round again. (Or did they even leave in the first place? Hmmmm.)
There was a hearing in Lansing, MI today about the possibility of housing the Gitmo detainees in the maximum security prison in mid-Michigan. Standish Max is one of a dozen state prisons scheduled to close by the end of the year due to budget cuts.
One plan to keep the prison open and save local jobs is to take in the overflow of prisoners from California. State guard/personnel positions will be retained.
Plan B is taking in the Gitmo detainees. Plan B may eliminate the state jobs....guards and others will be on federal payrolls. However, around 500 peripheral jobs will be created in the area. Federal officials will be touring the area tomorrow to study its suitability.
Plan of last resort is shutdown and layoffs.

On a personal note, I drove through Standish today and if I'd remembered my camera, I would have posted a picture of all the signs in front of businesses there in SUPPORT of keeping the prison open via either plan.
Standish Max is a relatively new facility...less than 20 years old...and I remember the big NIMBY fuss there was before it was built. But, in the ensuing years, there have been no escapes and people of the area obviously feel no threat being in proximity to the prison.
And keep in mind, in this particular area of the state, of the country, the unemployment rate is 17%. Seventeen percent. Retaining these jobs is a big farking deal around these here parts.

flowerchild,
Thanks much for update.
I find this so interesting. If the populace there needs and wants this facility to house GITMO detainees, what would be a valid reason for not doing same?
This seems to be a WIN-WIN for all.
Who is heading the opposition?

I'm for the jobs in your area increasing. Rec'd both ways.
Thanks for this.
May more people feel and share the way you do.

The only oppo I can think of would be the Republicans in Congress who would lose the closing of GITMO and TERRORISTS on US soil! as an issue to lie about to their base.
So Obama's plan might actually help restore the fallen US image in the world AND at the same time, create and save jobs in Michigan? Win-Win sounds good.
Good luck on this, flower. With a 17% unemployment rate, it seems like a no-brainer.

There's nothing to fear from taking these prisoners. They need to be somewhere. Why not in the state of my birth? If it would help, I'd be willing to drive over and demonstrate my belief in the utter safety of Michigan. Can't think of a nicer place than northern MI myself.
Peace be with you, flower. And may there be jobs.

Thanks for the update. This issue is going to be interesting. Republicans stand between a rock and a hard place. Will the Republicans ignore the need for jobs in order to stand by their two main principles of opposing Obama just to oppose him and the constant whipping up of fear and loathing their base? Prepare for another onslaught of screeching lies from the GOP. Which one of the wingnuts will make the MSM first? Palin, M. Bachmann, Limbaugh, Beck?

These are just two of the bills introduced to prohibit Gitmo detainees from setting foot on "American soil".
NIMBY----okay, I'm not even gonna start about this because I wouldn't be able to stop for two or three feet of blog space.
There is definitely gonna be a fight, but I reckon it won't last long. There is a January 2010 deadline to close Guantanamo and IF the detainees are to be brought to the US, any facility used will need to be altered to accommodate the needs of a court-within-a prison facility.
