The Long Slow Goodbye*
At some point in the next three months or so, GM will be filing for bankruptcy. This is just my opinion, of course, but I am convinced it will happen. It has to happen.
In the meantime, while everyone is getting used to the idea, here's what an autoworker might be facing for the next ten years or so using the real life experience of Delphi. For those who do not know, Delphi is an auto parts manufacturer and was spun off of parent GM in 1999.
This is kind of a link fest that show the deterioration of the middle class factory worker.

Oh. And then there's this...it's the one that set my hair on fire.
And today's headline...

"I think the union showed a lot of foresight in accepting these changes," says Steve Constable, plant manager at the Saginaw, Mich., facility. "They realized we need to do these things to be competitive. We made sure the union understood what we were doing, we got them involved on the ground floor, and they were right there when we implemented changes. They never fought us or resisted what we were doing, which is a great benefit."2000 Tax breaks for the Corporation helps retain high paying jobs.

GM Chairman Rick Wagoner said at the company's annual stockholder meeting in June that the money-losing automaker would make big cuts in its annual $5.6 billion health care bill, with or without the cooperation of the UAW.and...
The UAW and GM are negotiating possible concessions. But UAW President Ron Gettelfinger has said repeated ly that he will not reopen the union's GM labor contract, which expires in September 2007.and....
"The idea that a large, well-established corporation with a household name can't go bankrupt is a casualty of the past," said Patrick Anderson, president of the Anderson Economic Group in East Lansing.2007
The United Auto Workers union will brief Delphi Corp. employees today on a contract that ends the union's eight-year effort to keep pay and benefits at the auto- parts maker the same as at former parent General Motors Corp., people with knowledge of the matter said.More
The pay cut would bring former GM workers at Delphi to the same level as those hired at the parts supplier since 2004. Under the proposed contract, the base pay of Delphi workers hired since 2004 would be $16.23 an hour. The former GM workers now receive $27.44 an hour. .More
The tentative agreement reached last week calls for Delphi to offer wages of $14.50 to $16.23 an hour for all workers. Workers who began their employment with GM or who were hired before the lower-tier wage for new hires went into effect earned about $27 an hour.More

Union leader Mike Hanley doesn't see a "red flag" in a bankruptcy court judge's decision to delay until Thursday, April 2, approval of a deal that would allow Delphi Corp. to sell its steering business to General Motors Corp. What? Delphi to sell its steering business to GM? But...but...but didn't GM cut Delphi loose? Why would they want to buy back a business they didn't want 10 years ago? You know, after Delphi went to all the trouble of downsizing 18 plants world wide to 4, after they cut their workforce down to 7700, after the UAW made concession after concession so that a worker's paycheck went from $900 a week to $560. Why would GM want to buy back that business with their clean hands? Just askin'.
Oh. And then there's this...it's the one that set my hair on fire.
And today's headline...

Flower, people like you are making me so gd mad about all of this.
Give the damn thing to the UAW today. Just give it to them and then work out the financing. 20 mill to another member of the elite and Boner telling us, hey the government can't fire members of the elite.
Good post. This issue aint goin away. Good solid cites.

All to kill labor unions based on elite ideology.

We won't have seen anything like it since the 30's. Workers with no jobs. Families on the street. The symbolism of moving beyond our mediocre industrial history. If only we could make the flaming cars as well as we make the bombers --because at that, we ARE number one. Not that bombers don't have a place in the world.

Flowerchild, did you see the Michael Moore letter? A good emotional take on the subject. Got it in my email this morning.
What is going to happen to the crooks you site?
Man, these “done deals” get me going.
"We the People" to "King of the World": "YOU'RE FIRED!"

I had not seen Moore's letter. Migwetch (thanks) for sending the link, stratofrog! You know, Michael Moore and I are the same age and we grew up in neighboring towns. Our respective high schools had quite a rivalry going. We share a similar background so having similar politics isn't much of a stretch. :o)

Yes MM had me at “Roger and Me” and then by “Fahrenheit 9/11”… I made a commitment to help get out the vote. He came through town in ‘04 rocking the youth about the election. Doomed then, but they voted, and this time we got it! He has a lot of good spirit and heart. Must be in the water up around there. Megwitch for caring.

Always liked Moore. So pissed when Hollywood threw him under the bus. Thank you for this.

If you are referring to those fellas Miller and Ross, I don't know what happened to 'em. The misuse of bankruptcy law cite is 3 years old. I will google their names tomorrow and see what pops up. On the other hand, I might be too scared to look. :o\

Inflatable? Hmmmm. What we need now is a chicken with a sharp pitchfork. ;o)

Inflated rats should be punctured and dis-inflated whenever possible.

Rats?
Ack!
Seriously, I am crying AND sharpening my pitchfork. It is memories like these that get me soooo riled up when some of the elites around here spout off on the "spoiled Americans." They don't know what they are talking about. My experience-- which is very much a majority one--is people charging groceries and medicine on credit cards, not flat screen TVs and SUVs.
John Edwards was right about one thing. There obviously is two America's and woe to those that are finding out now, because it happens pretty rapidly.
=(
We are all GM workers now.

Don’t get me started on usury. Paying interest on the food we eat, or medicine? Yeah, “live within your means” when we don’t control the means.
We ARE all GM workers now, waiting for godot. But I appreciate the pitchfork. I think the rats are getting edgy now that the peoples feet are moving in their direction.

How many times are the stories of the homeless going to have to be written before it sinks in? EVERY LAST ONE OF US IS ONLY ONE BAD TURN AWAY FROM SLEEPING IN A RESTAURANT DOORWAY.

These goddamm Repugs are unpatriotic cretins who can't even follow settled law and the Original Intent they are so intent on forcing on the rest of us.
It's right there in the preamble to the Constitution that shows this Nation was predicated on the side of labor; you know, the part about "... forming a more perfect Union?"
They want to limit the Union by limiting the Constitution.
Fu**ers!

Just a heads-up, flower. Later today, I will finally post that blog that took a time of silence to percolate. You, especially, will LOVE what's come! (Blew me away too!)
Peace. By the way, I am especially fond of northern Michigan. My grandparents had cabins there. And I first fell in love with Native Americans in northern Michigan. (there's a clue there...)
We are in dire straits. God help us!
