Let Them Eat... Er... Opt Out!

Is it just me or did Harry Reid just get a bit mischievous on the opposition?

I mean, sure, the Democrats will all wrinkle their brows over how this isn't what they really wanted... and it does kind of suck that some states might actually get screwed out of real health care reform (for now, at least), but isn't it rather brilliant, too?

(It's just the crappy states anyway, riight?)

On the one hand it looks like the Dems are caving into pressure from many sides: states right's fanatics (tenth-ers), conservatives, anti-Obama-ites. The right can claim victory, opt-out, and say that they now have an objective way to measure the failure of "socialized medicine."

Sure, enjoy that.

Because we ALL know that huge monopolies that are barely regulated will provide better and more affordable care than ones that are forced to compete with a Medicare-style program you can opt INTO. If your state's leadership is Communist, I mean...

So when you talk to your friend in Florida (a slightly less crappy state) and they are waiting six years to see a doctor because they have Stalin as governor, you can gloat about how wonderful it is to be able to sell your home to afford the most exclusive and costly plans IN THE WORLD!!

I say we keep on our poker faces.

I mean, it's ALMOST worked with abstinence education. If Bristol Palin knows it doesn't work, word's gotten around, trust me on that.

Sure we had to wait until every teen in Texas had herpes and a few abortions, but HEY... we DID tell you before.

Maybe experience is a better teacher.

Sure, saying the words "abstinence education works" sounds a LOT better than saying "we have the worst sexual health outcomes of ANY state" ... I understand. So let's keep up that energy.

"We said no to Obamacare" sounds WAY better than:

"I lost the last election and our state (still) has one of the worst health care systems in the COUNTRY... how the hell did our people FIND OUT? I assumed they were STUPID! God I wish it was still 1993..."

Teen herpes we can live with...

But, heh, yeah... OPT OUT. Let's get a real referendum on what actually works. And let's see how long your people put up with being second rate citizens over YOUR failure to represent them properly. Maybe they will finally get sick of being one of the crappy states and will DEMAND non-crappy leadership. Or maybe they will just get sick.

Reid set up a political bear trap (the kind covered with sticks) and you are too dumb to see it. There's a nice fresh pot of honey on the other side for you... come and get it!

By all means, save us some tax dollars. We TRIED to cover everyone but you OUTSMARTED US. You've earned the right to opt out. YOU WON. Congratulations!

Shhhh.

I second barefooted on that one.

It's a good night for partying but there's more to be done tomorrow.

To be eligible for the public option envisioned by the Senate you must:

• Live in a state that does not opt out.
• Not be employed, or
• Not work for anyone who offers an employer-based health plan, or
• Work for such an employer but earn less than a living wage (Walmart employees take note).
• Not be eligible for Medicaid or Medicare or any other health plan.

There are two glaring problems with this:

A) The so-called public option will not be available to the vast majority of the public.
B) The public plan will compete for business in the highest-risk part of the risk pool. What private company in its right mind would not be happy to let the public plan take all that business, while it concentrates its efforts on the profitable, and lower-risk, employee group insurance for larger businesses?

If you didn't catch Sen. Ron Wyden on Rachel Maddow tonight, here's a link to the clip: www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/ . It's brilliant (hey, it's Rachel!) and worth a few minutes of your time.

Liberals and progressives have come a long way on health care this year. Now it's time to ratchet up the pressure.

so, if I am unemployed and on the publiv option, then find a job that offers a private plan with extortionist rate, must I enroll? And, because this always confuses me, why the hell would my employer care whether I am creating more work for their HR department or paying for my own healthcare?

The short answer is that you may choose to stay with the public option under the circumstances you describe, or go with your new employer's plan.

The long answer, from HR3200 (which is not the Senate public option) is detailed in OldenGoldenDecoy's post today: Once Out of the Employer Exchange Plan You May Elect to Remain in the Private Exchange Even Until Medicare Age.

I don't know whether you employer is obligated to contribute to the premium cost of your public option plan at that point or not.

Why don't we just set up an exchange to sell health care insurance plans into big pools where we use mathematical formulas to tabulate risk, but not tell those formulas and not let buyers of the insurance pools know the risks involved. We could call these awesome plans "default insurance swaps" and then everything in the world would be better and birds would sing.

And the economy? Well, it would get better of course!

You are right... did see this earlier, thanks (great segment)

user-pic

I see no reason to cheer or support what I haven't seen.

user-pic

Sucks when the real world moves too fast for you. Guess you can only comment on a bill after it is passed since they can always change it.

user-pic

Agreed.

This is loosely (and satirically, I don't know if you guys noticed) based on a better version of what is being rolled out as a "public option." Call is aspirational satire, or just ASS for short.

Seriously, we are actually discussing why DINOS in the Senate are going to vote FOR a Repub filibuster.

One can only hope that the flood of enthusiasm for something they thought was toxic will get these lames to actually represent us.

So Harry Reid and the rest of you: MAKE HISTORY. Stop being wusses, if you cave to large corporate interests WE WILL ALL REMEMBER. In short, GET THIS SHIT RIGHT.

user-pic

I love it! That's kinda how I see it, too.

This is a good step, IMHO.

Then comes reconciliation!!!!!

Then comes the final vote where only 51 are needed in the Senate.

user-pic

Now Lieberman says he's NOT going to vote for Cloture! What an ASS!!!

NOW is the time for the WH to really twist Lieberman's arm.... until it snaps!!!!

Make him an offer he simply can't refuse.

user-pic

Don't worry it sounds like Lieberman isn't quite sure what a filibuster is. (Now he says he'll vote for cloture)

He does know what a douche is cuz he looks in the mirror every morning.

user-pic

Where did Lieberman say he'd vote for cloture?

I can't find it.

user-pic

You are right I misread my source... sorry bout that.

He is still a douche.
