The Grand Reversal
I'm not a Taoist (or any other kind of -ist), but I really enjoyed Benjamin Hoff's books The Tao of Pooh and The Te of Piglet (flawed as they are) and I dug up these quotes from the Tao Te Ching (ca. 400 BCE) which seem relevant for the current situation.
If you would have a thing shrink,
You must first stretch it;
If you would have a thing weakened,
You must first strengthen it;
If you would have a thing laid aside,
You must first set it up;
If you would take from a thing,
You must first give to it.
--Book I, XXXVI, 79
The court is corrupt,
The fields are overgrown with weeds,
The granaries are empty;
Yet there are those dressed in fineries,
With swords at their sides,
Filled with food and drink,
And possessed of too much wealth.
This is known as taking the lead in robbery.
Far indeed is this from the way.
--Book II, LIII, 121
Not that I think the Chinese are especially wise. They seem to ignore their great teachings as much as we ignore our own Constitution.
