I Am Eric the Lawyer

Well, folks, it's beginning to look like the beginning of the end.  By that, I mean that it is increasingly likely "that one" black guy with the big ears and the funny name is going to be the President of the United States.  To make matters worse, the party of Roosevelt and Kennedy appears to be on the brink of a filibuster-proof majority.

We all know what calamities we are likely to witness starting next January... Those damned progressives are going to push their beliefs into American law.  Somebody save us!!!  The protection of labor rights?  Strong regulation of large corporations?  Government-backed green environmental policy?  You know what that means -- fair labor and pay standards, the end of the era of monopolies and golden parachutes for C.E.O.'s, the end of dependence on fossil fuels and the reversal of global warming...  Can you imagine?  And don't get me started on the fact that they might reduce the national debt, end the Iraq War, stop spying on American citizens, and halt the illegal imprisonment and torture.  They actually want the U.S. to regain its respect in the international community... even from Our Mortal Enemy (Spain) and **audible gasp** France!!!  The nerve of those people...

As if that wasn't enough, the liberals are going to force their social agenda on everyone.  They'll inject freedom of thought and speech into schools.  They'll try to give equal rights to everyone -- race, religion, and sexual orientation be damned.  How dare they allow gay people to have the same rights to get married and not get laid anymore like the rest of us!?!  What will we tell the children?  More specifically, what will I tell my biracial children when they come home from school and announce that their best friend is a Buddhist with two mommies and they're okay with that?  What will we do when all children believe evolution is real, and the only difference is that some of them believe their God set it in motion and others don't?

Seriously, what will we do when nobody believes that the earth is only five thousand years old???  "Land of the Lost" is totally ruined for me now... and God forbid that my childrens' school give demonstrations on contraception.  Everyone knows that teenagers would all be abstinent until marriage but for their chubby, mustachioed gym teacher showing them how to put a condom on a cucumber (I still get all hot and bothered when I pass through the produce aisle of my local grocer)...

We're on the precipice here, boys and girls.  I better get my passport in order, because I'm not sure I can stick around for eight or even four years of the use of rationality and common sense in the U.S. Government.  Oh, the humanity!!!

I am Eric the Lawyer, and I approve this message.

I'll be commenting soon...

Well, ladies and gentlemen, it appears that Biden is the guy.  Of course, th Obama campaign decides to send out the announcement on August 23, 2008... which is a very special day.  What, you don't know???  It's my wedding day :o)  That's right boys and girls, I'm getting married in approximately 13 hours...  then I'm off to Jamaica with my new wife for a week... poor me, right?

Anyway, I'm pretty excited about this ticket.  I'll be commenting regularly as soon as I return from paradise.  Stay cool, my TPM compadres...  see you soon.

RIP George Carlin

George Carlin, one of the greatest and most controversial comedians of the last four decades, has died of heart failure.

Today, I'll be mourning him not only as someone who provided me with entertainment, but also as a champion of our freedom of speech.

Carlin was 71.

We'll miss you, George.

One Republican for Obama, Many More to Go

Over the past few weeks, I've been working on a paper entitled "Why I Support Barack Obama"

It's a 5-page document in which I discuss the following:
1) My background, family, education, and career (basically, an "About Me";
2) Barack Obama - the person;
3) Barack Obama's policy positions; and
4) Responses to the nasty smear campaign (mostly a fleshed-out version of the campaign's official smear-fighting campaign.

I e-mailed the document to everyone in my e-mail address book, including several Republicans; and I received the following response from a good friend of mine from law school.  He was a hardcore Republican, one of the few who could keep me on my toes in a political debate, and I spent many hours during our time at school debating politics with him...  Here's the response in full:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eric,

Thanks for sending the e-mail, I really enjoyed your points and how eloquently you presented them.  I have followed the primaries, both Republican and Democrat very closely since they began.  For the first time in my adult life I voted for a Democrat in the Missouri primary and I voted for Obama.  I'll be voting for him in November.

Living here in XXXXXXXXXX (edited to respect his privacy), I was shocked at how many people, including my friends, believed in some of these internet rumors that were started up about Obama.  I actually had one of my friends say that he wouldn’t vote for Obama because he wouldn’t put his hand over his heart during the pledge.  I was astonished to find that one of my friends would be that naïve to believe that this was true.

Obama captivates me, and I think our country needs to be captivated by hope instead of captivated by news of rising gas prices, rising food prices, war, plummeting housing markets, etc.  I will admit though, I am hoping that he will surround himself with a great cabinet and I hope that cabinet does not include Hillary Clinton.

Anyway, just wanted to tell you I enjoyed the e-mail.

Take care buddy,

XXXX

This is from a guy who I never believed would vote for a Democrat, and he has and will vote for Obama.  I guess the point of this post is this:  Election Day is fast approaching.  Keep fighting the good fight.  Engage in polite, positive political discussion.  Don't worry about putting the opposition on its heels with negative attacks on their party or their candidate. Present the case for Senator Obama the way he would want you to -- honestly and truthfully -- and you can and will bring more people into the fold.

YES WE CAN!

Ted Kennedy Airlifted to Mass. General Hospital

Breaking news on MSNBC:

Sen. Ted Kennedy was just airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital with an emergency "undisclosed illness."  His press office is not returning calls at the moment.

Can someone at TPM please get on this story?

That Hillary Show

Hey everybody... I've been reading TPM throughout the primary (turned on to it by a coworker), and I've never posted before.  Whether anyone will read this or not, I have no idea.

First, a little introduction:  I'm a 27-year-old attorney from the city of St. Louis, MO (Yes, we CAN... deliver a swing state for Obama).  I work in state government.  Considering both my education level (J.D.) and my government salary (a pittance), that I'm apparently in both the Obama and Clinton demographic.  I'm a Southern (originally from Southeast MO, south of the Mason-Dixon line) young, educated, white, and hard-working...  I'm proud to say that I've had an Obama sticker on my car and a sign in my window since he opened a St. Louis headquarters, and  I've been named a precinct captain for Young Lawyers for Obama.

Anyway, I just thought I'd make an introduction.  Expect more comments and posts from me in the near future.  Now, I'll leave you with a humorous YouTube site that I discovered this morning...

'For some reason, the most vocal Christians among us never mention the Beatitudes. But, often with tears in their eyes, they demand that the Ten Commandments be posted in public buildings. And of course that’s Moses, not Jesus. I haven’t heard one of them demand that the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes, be posted anywhere.
"Blessed are the merciful" in a courtroom? "Blessed are the peacemakers" in the Pentagon? Give me a break!'
