ProgressivePunch.org ranks Sestak with a lifetime progressive score of 93.02% for a rank of 83/433. 100% on Family Planning, Government Checks on Corporate Power, Housing and Labor Rights. He's in the high 80's and 90's in all other categories. This progressive ranking is on the same order as Leahy, Harkin, Schumer, and Levin, and minimally lower than Kennedy and Boxer.

On the other hand we have Arlen the chameleon. Specter has a lifetime progressive score of 37.06% which ranks 59/99 in the Senate. Compare Ben Nelson who ranks 58/99 has a still lousy but roughly 40% higher lifetime progressive score of 52.45%. That is the best for any Republicanistic member of the Senate, but it's still on the far side of that 40% chasm. He has a lifetime record that screams, "Don't trust me!", even as his lying lips say, "I'm your man!"

Progressives should heed the message of Specter's record and give their support to Sestak.

Interesting, maybe it's time for Harry the Meek to bring back the NUCLEAR (or as my Senators called it, the "Constitutional") Option -- let's get a new Gang of Fourteen - or 12 or whatever it takes and put the filibuster on the back burner where it belongs. In the current Senate Oligarchy, 40 senators representing less than 12% of the population can block anything. But I wouldn't hold my breath. Harry doesn't seem to know how to play poker and better than he knows how to lead.

NEWS RELEASE
May 24, 2005

BROWNBACK STATEMENT ON JUDICIAL NOMINEES
Hopeful all of President’s nominees will be guaranteed an up or down vote

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Sam Brownback today made the following statement
expressing his concern with the agreement reached by 14 senators regarding President
Bush’s judicial nominees.
“Some progress was made yesterday, but I am not satisfied with this agreement,”
Brownback said. “For four years we have been working to get an up or down vote on
the president’s nominees—to have them approved by a majority of the Senate, as
required by the Constitution, not a super-majority as required by the Democrats. We
have showed every restraint in not rushing through this. Now that we have exhausted
all other options, it is time to move forward in the process.
“It’s important to note that the Constitutional option is still on the table. If one of the
president’s nominees is filibustered at any point in the future, I will support the Senate
leadership’s implementation of the Constitutional option.
“All of the president’s nominees—both now and in the future—deserve a fair up or
down vote, regardless of whether some members of the Senate feel they can be
filibustered based on whatever they define to be extraordinary circumstances.”

Have we all forgotten that back in the early 80's when they doubled social security taxes, that was to create the trust fund to accommodate the demographic bulge in the population curve in the generation following WWII. The whole idea of the trust fund is it starts to cover the shortfall in SS receipts as the BB generation enters retirement. It is SUPPOSED to go into negative amortization late next decade and it is SUPPOSED to be exhausted mid century. Not it seems to be doing exactly what it was designed to do.

So what's the problem? The trust fund was looted by fancy accounting that would be illegal if you or I did it. The cash was swapped for treasuries, but now market is flooded with treasuries tied to our brittle currency and bearing 0 to 1/4% interest. So what else is there besides raising taxes to pay off the bonds, or print money to do it? Or we could privatize it, right?

Theoretically, since the parties have not complied with the MN supreme court decision and the agreed-upon rules, the whole issue could become moot and Franken will prevail by 50 votes. As soon has the state canvassing board certifies the count, Coleman's flacks will be off to court with an election contest. When that happens it will be interesting to see what Harry and the jellyfish do.

One guy on the panel - Sean Egan - runs a second tier credit rating agency for investors only. He's pissed and he's talking. Horror story!

As Greenspan more or less admitted during his recent congressional testimony, deregulation was less important than the failure of regulators to act using authorities that were already in place. Clinton's deregulation scheme might have been OK if not for Greenspan's (and Bush's)ideological paralysis in the face of a clear and present economic danger.

Johnson County, KS - Republican stronghold. I did early voting but my son voted today. NOBODY at the polls. One of the poll workers joked to him that he needed to tell everyone there was an hour wait.

Seem like the Republicans may not be as enthusiastic as in previous years. Meanwhile, across the state line in MO there are huge lines and in some of the DEM strongholds the wrong poll books were delivered this morning causing a 2 hour delay before voting even began. The usual crap!
