Since the legal end has been talked to death, let's talk politics. Obama usually has pretty good antennae for race issues. Did they fail him this time or, is Obama playing a distraction game of his own. Right wing culture warriors are a pretty predictable bunch and Obama handed them a big piece of pie. I'm not so sure this wasn't carefully planned.

Excellent post

I would add Five Thirty Eight.com to the winner's circle. An obscure pair of baseball statistics nerds created the best poll-summary site on the web and got semi-famous in the process. Nervous dems clicked hourly just to keep up with the latest. Weeks ahead of Nov. 4th, they called a E.C. blowout for Obama and calmed millions of nerves world wide.

McCain has run a impressively poor campaign. Palin was his biggest mistake but he made many others. I honestly don't understand why he did what he did. He won the nomination because of his independence from Bush and then decided to embrace and promote many of W's most horrible ideas. Running a Rovian campaign when most Americans think Rovianism got us into this mess in the first place.

I haven't seen Obama's ground game at work, but from all I've read and heard it is impressive. McCain's appears to be marginal.

It would have been tough for any Republican this year, but I think a better candidate would have made this contest much closer at this stage. I think now McCain can win only through voter fraud.

I think Powell knows that in 2003 he demonstrated too much loyalty and not enough courage. Today he partially reversed that. Endorsing Obama was a pretty politically safe thing to do, but defending the patriotism of Muslim Americans was courageous and classy. He should be at least as admired for today's action, as he is criticized for his U.N. speech 5 years ago.

Good column Jim. Thanks.

I usually love Ellen but I find smarmy kinda sexy. I can't agree with her here though. Brooks matters for all the reasons you replied. He merits careful the scrutiny you provided. That said, I still love Ellen.

As for Brooks, I think he writes something sensible every fourth or fifth column. The rest is right-wing noise. The Palin comeback piece is one glaring example, but my favorite is still the pathetic piece he wrote after ABC's last Obama-Clinton debate admonishing we liberals not to whine about the blatantly biased performance of Gibson and Stephanopolous.

I don't know why Brooks continues to play the water boy for the right wing, but I'm glad to see that, at the moment, the water is getting a little too heavy.
