Fit to Serve? New York Times Raises New Questions on McCain's Health
The New York Times is raising new questions regarding John McCain's health and fitness to serve, noting that while unanswered health questions remain on all four presidential and vice-presidential candidates, McCain's missing health details are of greatest concern given his age and history of cancer. A 72-year-old presidential candidate with a history of malignant melanoma, an infamously unstable temper, and a murky psychiatric history which may include Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder owing to his war experiences, McCain has designated Sarah Palin, an inexperienced dilettante with zero background in national or international affairs, to be his backup in case of incapacity or death. If elected, McCain would be the oldest and perhaps unhealthiest incoming president in American history, backed up by our least experienced vice-president ever. Thus far, however, the media and the public have been granted only severely limited access to McCain's medical and psychiatric records. Efforts are underway, however, to press McCain for full disclosure of his medical records including psychiatric records as a matter of the public's right to know.
The Real McCain and Brave New Films recently launched a campaign to press for full disclosure of McCain's medical records, circulating a video and petition which at time of this writing has been signed by more than 59,000 people including more than 2800 medical doctors. Meanwhile, top Democrats including senators Claire McCaskill of Missouri, Harry Reid of Nevada, and Charles Schumer of New York have repeated calls for McCain to fully disclose his medical records (see Huffington Post, ABC News, Columbia Journalism Review, Open Left). These efforts deserve our full support, and Democratic leaders such McCaskill, Reid, and Schumer who courageously defy the unspoken "hands off" policy on McCain's age and health deserve congratulations.
While McCain's age and physical health are legitimate long-term concerns particularly given Sarah Palin's unreadiness to take over as president, his mental health is a matter of immediate and ongoing concern. Of particular concern is the matter of McCain's infamous anger-management problem, such as when he reacted to disagreement on immigration reform from fellow Republican senator John Cornyn of Texas by screaming, "F*ck you!"; when he called fellow Republican senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico an "a**hole"; and when he called fellow Republican senator Charles Grassley of Iowa a "f*cking jerk." Once in a 1987 meeting at the height of Central American tensions, according to fellow Republican senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi, McCain reached across the table and physically assaulted a Nicaraguan representative, seizing him by his shirt collar. "The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine...," Cochran later said when endorsing Mitt Romney for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, "...He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."
Readers are encouraged to sign the petition for full disclosure of McCain's medical records, to press Democratic leaders including their own senators and representatives to raise the issue on the campaign trail, and even to press McCain himself by e-mail (john_mccain@mccain.senate.gov, info@johnmccain.com).
Voters have the right to know if their presidential candidates are fit to serve.

Didn't former Senator Bill Bradley, when he ran for the 2000 Democratic nomination, balk at releasing medical records, citing privacy concerns?
If memory serves, he came in for some pointed editorial criticism at the time for holding a view on these matters said to be untenable for a candidate seeking the presidency.

My dad is 72 years old. That said, he told me that McCain is too old to be president. Also, that he won't be able to stay focused because he will be dosing off in meetings. At this time, we need an alert, younger man to run the country. My dad doses off sometimes without warning even though he's most likely healthier than McCain. It's worth noting my dad is a conservative Republican.
Age is important especially since McCain chose Palin. Contrary to what people think. Obama has much more experince and knowledge of the issues facing our country today.
McCain's temper is also an issue. It could lead to erratic decisions and cause are standing in the world worse than it is today.
That's enough not to vote for him.

I don't agree with this. I mean, yes, I think McCain may well have physical and psychological issues that make him a questionable choice. But I don't buy into the notion that one must be willing to disclose the details of every doctor visit in order to be president. Particularly on the psychological side. It's just not right.
Now, I can see something like requiring all candidates to pass a physical and psychological evaluation. They are being vetted for the commander in chief role and we do screen military candidates this way (in theory, anyway).
But not this. What an awful precedent. Next it'll be the VP. And then members of Congress. Supreme Court justices. And on down the line.
Anyone with sense and a notion of going into public life will immediately cease and desist all therapy, meds, etc. Feeling like suicide? Better keep it to yourself.
The only politicians we'll have left will be those with the preternatural self-preservation skills of serial killers.
Need a psych profile of John McCain? Observe the man yourself. He's surrounded by cameras constantly. But leave his records alone. We can pretty much guess there's some awful stuff to be seen. I'd be the most creeped out if he came out of Vietnam WITHOUT some sort of mental trauma (as might a sociopath).
For the record, I also don't need to see pictures of him naked or read all of his privileged attorney/client communications in order to make a decision whether or not to vote for him.

Although I also have grave concerns about McCain's physical and psychological fitness to be President, I agree with you about the risk in making full records disclosure a requirement.
At the same time, though, it does seem there ought to be some review of records so that those clearly unfit can be screened out. I'm thinking here of Reagan in his second term, in which he was widely rumored to be already suffering from Alzheimers. Perhaps some sort of review panel, comprised of both Republican and Democratic physicians, sworn to absolute secrecy about the details in the file, would be the way to go. They could make a ruling and only release information if the candidate was found unfit. But even that idea has serious flaws because it puts such a lot of power in the hands of just a few doctors, who might be tempted to interfere with the process for partisan reasons.
It's a tricky issue.

I suppose you were one of those people pushing the idea that Hillary had something scandalous in her taxes because she didn't release them early.
The fatality rate for melanoma is 3 of 100,000 people. It is not in the top 10 cancers, and presumably McCain has a lot better access to health care and early checkups than you or eye, and late detection is the main factor in melanoma fatality. Median age of death from melanoma is 67.
Regarding Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, take a hike. He left Vietnam in 1974, he had plenty of treatment when he got home, and it has nothing to with his pick of Palin or anything else.
McCain has lots of flaws to attack him on. Not sure why you're wasting your time on stupid, ugly attacks.

I agree with Desidero's last point. Eades - in the long run, we'll be better off arguing the issues. Try to remember what we're fighting for in the broader struggle. You won't see a feature article in The Nation about the need for young presidents in general, know what I mean?

I'm sure everyone will blast me for suggesting that they read the NY Post. But Marc Siegel did write a rebuttal to Larry Altman's article. Say what you will, but at least Siegel was one of the medical journalists that actually reviewed the 1,000 pages of medical history. Altman never saw the entire record. You'd think the Times would get some other journalist (that actually reviewed the 1,000 pages) to write this article.

The title of this diary is misleading.
Although the NYT raised questions about McCain's health, the article talked about all of the main players' medical health, strongly emphasizing Biden's health as well.
And, from this article we also learn that none of the main players have been particularly forthcoming with his or her medical records.

Among the reasons I will not sign this petition is that it does not call on Obama to do the same. Nor does it call on all presidential nominees going forward to do the same.
So its authors take an inherently unprincipled position. This leaves the entire effort vulnerable to an all-too-plausible charge that it is sleazy in applying a double standard that does not also call on Obama and all future nominees going forward to do the same.
The thrust of my initial comment in the thread on Bradley was that if mainstream media were insisting that the public had a right to know his full medical history when he was not even a nominee, then surely the same media outlets should rather loudly be calling for that same standard to be applied to McCain now. I may have missed them but I haven't seen any such demands during the general election season.

Doctors and others say John McCain’s Records Must Be Released

Palin also refuses to release any medical records. What is she hiding? Does anyone remember Eagleton's psych records being leaked before his election? And how he was disqualified?
Not to start a silly rumor but to ask out loud:
What drives the arrogance of an American candidate who tells us all to screw off when we ask to know her medical records?
Of course she must release them before November 4th -- or she is not a vetted candidate.

I am a doctor and I disagree. I don't see why someone running for public office should have to release their records. You don't lose your right to confidentiality just because you become a politician. Besides, if you aren't a doctor, you can't accurately interpret the records anyway.
There should be a way to ensure someone is medically fit enough to be the President without a total invasion of privacy.

I am a wholistic practitioner and I am thankful that a number of doctors and other Americans have signed a petition demanding that John McCain release his health records. I signed the petition over a month ago and had read that several media outlets and news organizations (Reuters and ABC) were aware of the petition and the video on McCain's health but downplayed it.
All of you who have posted should check the video out about McCain's health.... Doctors who are demanding the truth have looked into this issue with the awareness that McCain's health is worst off than what is generally known about him. If there is no problem then why doesn't he just release the reports?
I believe, that if people knew the truth about McCain's health, would they really vote for him with Palin, a heart-beat away from the White House??????
See the information on McCain's health for yourself at http://therealmccain.com/doctors/
Also, I do believe that Obama's health records were disclosed about 2 months ago. At that time, a news analysis compared Obama's chances of living out his presidential term , based on his past health and wellness choices, compared to McCain's. I will attempt to go back and post it, because, this analysis documented, for the record, that Obama is in good health.
Obiden has just released his records. Now, is it true that Palin is unwilling to release her health records? Does the refusal to tell the truth by McCain and Palin make you wonder what do these people have to hide?
