One of my HS classmates supported Wallace for Prez, and showed me some of his campaign literature. There was a story about a very young Wallace, quite a good boxer, beating up white bullies to protect some blacks. Early in his political career he was seen as one of the fairer judges, meaning least prejudiced, but he found that he couldn't win higher office without becoming a champion of segregation.

Summer of 1972, I had a black coworker who stunned me by saying she supported Wallace because she felt even though he was segregationist, he would serve the black people's economic interests.
