Dashboard

I followed Clearthinker and barefooted. Now in Dashboard I only see their posts and comments - not mine. Should I be following myself?

your posts are in your blog. your dashboard is where you do your stalking.

user-pic

OK, but my dashboard always showed my stuff before I followed anyone.

user-pic

No we didn't have a "My Dashboard" before, it's a new function. We did have a "My Profile" link, which you seem to be looking for, which is gone.

Now to look at your own Blogs, Comments and Recommends, those are now your "My Blog" link, that has become the replacemnt for "My Profile."

I just looked at yours, by clicking on your name:
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/donal_fagan/
Your blogs are all there, and the tabs for your comments and recommends.

The error message that you have no blogs, I think that is temporary bugs with the installation, I got that for a front page contributor a couple of hours ago, and now I am not. I also have gotten Movable Type error messages for some people's pages, but then when I tried again, the page came up.

One thing I just found out is that the links at the bottom of our blog page are archives of our blogs only. Those weekly archives at the bottom of your blog page are filled only with your blogs. If you go to the earliest week there, you can continue on to even earlier posts, as on those weekly archives there are "previous" and "next" links at the top. You can hit the previous week link over and over to get further back in your own archive. Not as good as 2 software versions ago when we had a complete archive of our comments as well, but better than nothing.

p.s. I am finding that the comments tab on user pages is really slow, really far behind. Comments post quickly to a thread but they take a real long time to show up on a user profile.

user-pic

We had a dashboard this morning, and it showed all my posts and comments.

Orlando,

re: your dashboard is where you do your stalking.

Your comment stuck in my mind, cause I know it's true, that is how some people will use it, to be sure.

But then it got me thinking meta, and I came back to post a question on that:

why the heck does it have to be that way on internet forums?

I like to read Paul Krugman's column. The New York Times tells me exactly what days it will be published and where it will be published, on the second last page of A Section. And I check for it there on those days.

Does that mean I am stalking Paul Krugman?

Why oh why do so many people feel the need to get so personal on internet forums? What is that all about? It puzzles me to this day. Do they see their ex-spouse or their hated father or someone that rejected them in high school in the posts of another anonymous internet poster? And to turn it around, are there people out there really screaming "that Paul Krugman, I hate him, he reminds me of my ex-wife, and that's why I read his columns religiously, so I can yell at him while I'm doing it?"

I've signed up for 20 some "following", and I can see that it's going to be useful tool for people to form their own little audiences of similar tastes, and that includes those who want to dissect Sarah Palin's aminocentesis report, those who do want to spew hatread at each other as if an ex-spouse, those who want a bar like Cheers where everyone knows their name, those who like echo chambers, and also all those who don't like any of those things. Kind of a "live and let live" scenario firming up, methinks. If you're going to be dealing with a large motley audience, which this site has, I basically see a lot of potential in this tool.

Can one follow oneself?

Interesting question.

user-pic

Probably more of a philosophical question than a technical one...

user-pic

And for some, it may be a psychological question.

user-pic

And this is what I get on My Blog:

This user has not started their blog yet!

Well, I'm turning in. Now the little gnomes can come out and fix everything.

user-pic

Can't help you there. Sorry.

user-pic

Things are still messed up. Give it a year or two, and all will be well.

user-pic

Does anyone know how to unfollow someone?

user-pic

The "follow/following" button on every profile page toggles back and forth. When it says "follow me" it is offering you the option to do that, so you aren't doing it yet. When it says "following," you are doing it, and you would click it back to "follow me" to undo it.

user-pic

Thanks. I could not get that to work on the beta site so have not followed anyone here yet. Plus I kinda like the statement:

Emma Zahn is not following anyone.

:-)

user-pic

Reply to you below. The goldarn thingie must not have been clicked.

BTW, if you had me on your "follow" list, you would see that I have replied to you here, and you would also see that I put another comment on this thread. That's how it works.

I saw your "thanks" reply to me on my Dashboard right away, that's how I answered so quickly.

On my comments list on my blog page, meanwhile, there are still only two comments I made much earlier in the day, and I have made quite a few others since then. Those are not working as well, or maybe simply not working yet.

user-pic

;) Ditto

user-pic

Emma Zahn is not following anyone.

Yeah gah I just hate the metaphor myself, it makes me go yeech. As I just wrote on another thread that I am the kinda gal that wants neither to follow nor lead.

Nonetheless, I think you will find it a very useful function eventually. It gives you a diary of everything the people you like to read are doing, including the pieces they are recommending, and their comments. It's giving them much faster than the comments pages on the profiles, those do not seem to be updating well.
The dashboard seems to really be way ahead on the updating.

Remember the old global comment list? It gives you something similar to that, if you can start piling up "follows" of a group of users you find interesting. It takes out the ability to catch a good newbie, but since you're picking what you are following, you're also filtering out the noise you had to sift through on a global comments list.

It's very easy to manage and to change, I just figured out where that is, no sweat, they give you a list, see my comment on TheraP's "Tips" thread,

Hey Donal, here's the deal: If you click the "Your Dashboard" link, it won't take you to the info you're looking for. Instead, you'll get the community dashboard that shows the posts, comments and recs of the people you're following. The way to get to your own stuff is to click the "Your Blog" link. Confused the heck out of me for awhile too.

user-pic

By the way, if you "unfollow" everyone you're currently following, then you'll only see your own stuff when you click the "Your Dashboard" link. In case you're in the mood for some additional confusion...

user-pic

Yeah, I just unfollowed everyone (sorry) and found that out, but I still get the "not blogging yet" error under "Your Blog." If I click on my name under the list of popular followees, though, I do make it to My TPM (beta)Blog.

So there.

user-pic

still get the "not blogging yet" error under "Your Blog."

This is some bizarro virtual space we are in here, because when I click on your name, I still get your blog posts, as I did before, never got that message on you. I did get it for Theda Skocpol several times yesterday, even though she had posts right on the TPMCafe front page. Must say I have run across some strange page loads a couple times, like with my own blog page with American Dreamer's avatar box on the right side, I presume because I had just been on American Dreamer's page previously. I'm often on dialup using the site at home, so I can see how the complexity of this new site loads, and one thing I noticed from that is that the logged-in info/data loads last, after everything else.

user-pic

There's a bunch of stuff that's still messed up. My Recommended list completely disappeared for awhile yesterday, then came back with all sorts of weird crap on it, then fixed itself later in the day (although the times listed for when I made the recs are WAY off). I just tried to post a comment on another thread, but I couldn't because on that page I'm not logged in. (It's only on that single page. The little "Welcome" thing at the top of the page is missing, and when I try to post a comment, it's being treated as if it's from an anonymous user.) Still some bugs to chase out of the system, I guess.
