TAKING ONE FOR THE TEAM

I found this little tid bit of comedy from theonion.com dated 2/01/06:
"Tonight, by executive order, I am creating a permanent department with a vital mission: to ensure that the political scandals, underhanded dealings, and outright criminal activities of this administration are handled in a professional and orderly fashion," Bush said.
The centerpiece of Bush's plan is the Department Of Corruption, Bribery, and Incompetence, which will centralize duties now dispersed throughout the entire D.C.-area political establishment.
The Scandal Secretary will log all wiretaps and complaints of prisoner abuse, coordinate paid-propaganda efforts, eliminate redundant payoffs and bribes, oversee the appointment of unqualified political donors to head watchdog agencies, control all leaks and other high-level security breaches, and oversee the disappearance of Iraq reconstruction funds. He will also be responsible for issuing all official denials that laws have been broken.
This is a more recent example of comedy from Huffpo:
"I am confident that I made decisions based on principle, that I made calls as best I could, and I did not sell my soul," Bush told an audience of about 1,000 men and women...
.................................................
Outside, about 300 protesters burned "W." in effigy and hurled shoes.

This article struck me because it emphasizes the thin line between comedy and raging anger.
Tim Reid at Timesonline got as pissed about w becoming a motivational speaker as I did in my recent blog.
He left office with the US embroiled in two wars, a Great Recession and with his approval rating a toxic 22 per cent. So the next stage in his career is obvious. George W Bush -- who last year inspired millions of people to vote Democrat -- is about to become a highly-paid motivational speaker.
Old Tim kind of finished his rant like I had but selected some other statements made by our former Commander-in-Chief:
What George said
"In terms of the economy -- look, I inherited a recession, I am ending on a recession"
-- Washington, January 12, 2009
"I'll be long gone before some smart person ever figures out what happened inside this Oval Office"
-- Washington, May 12, 2008
"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we"
-- Washington, August 5, 2004
"The CIA laid out several scenarios and said life could be lousy, life could be OK, life could be better, and they were just guessing as to what the conditions might be like"
-- New York, September 21, 2004
"I'm the master of low expectations"
-- On Air Force One, June 4, 2003
"There's no cave deep enough for America, or dark enough to hide"
-- Oklahoma, August 29, 2002
"I know the human being and fish can co-exist peacefully"
-- Michigan, September 29, 2000
"Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream"
-- Wisconsin, October 18, 2000

I made this short list of reasons why George W. Bush was not that good of a comedian, really.
1. I do not recall, Gonzales said. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIgbJSrIvWc
2. Secretary Ken Salazar of the Department of Interior an Obama appointee finds it hard to laugh much these days:
"In its last weeks in office, the Bush Administration pushed through a rule that allows coal mine operators to dump mountaintop fill into streambeds if it's found to be the cheapest and most convenient disposal option," said Secretary Salazar. "We must responsibly develop our coal supplies to help us achieve energy independence, but we cannot do so without appropriately assessing the impact such development might have on local communities and natural habitat and the species it supports."
3. We cannot forget Bolton of course who continually throughout his career fought to destroy the UN. I mean Bush made him the U.S. Ambassador to the UN.
4. Bush put a guy named Martin on the FCC. Before joining Bush-Cheney 2000, Martin served as legal advisor to FCC Commissioner Harold Furchtgott-Roth, in the Office of the Independent Counsel, and as an associate of Wiley Rein LLP. One of Wiley Rein's most important clients is Verizon
5. In September 5, 2006, Bush nominated Peters to replace Norman Mineta as Secretary of Transportation.[4] She was confirmed on September 29, 2006 by the United States Senate.
Peters is an advocate of leasing U.S. roads and interstates to private companies and having user fees (i.e., tolls) for building new highways. In an interview, Peters said that the National Highway System will run out of money by decade's end without substantial changes and, rather than raise taxes, some states should turn to toll roads leased to private corporations to fill gaps.[7]
http://www.doi.gov/news/09_News_Releases/042709.html
6. Bush's first Secretary of Energy, Spencer Abraham, was controversial at the time of his 2001 appointment because as a senator he co-sponsored S.896, a bill to abolish the United States Department of Energy, in 1999.[38] Samuel Wright Bodman III, Sc.D. is the United States Secretary of Energy and was previously Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department.
7. In 2001, Bush appointed Philip A. Cooney, a former lobbyist for the American Petroleum Institute, to the White House Council on Environmental Equality. Cooney is known to have edited government climate reports in order to minimize the findings of scientific sources tying greenhouse gas emissions to global warming.[43]
Just in this short list, it seems clear that George W. Bush could be incompetent and evil at the same time. I guess that is why I think that he does have a soul under his comedic masque.
I mean w chooses as his chief legal adviser and Attorney General, someone who has no memory.
He permits his Secretary of Interior to issue an order allowing direct contamination into America's drinking water as one of his last acts before stepping down from power.
He appoints John Bolton as U.N. Ambassador, knowing he could not get consent from the Senate.
He gives Verizon its own position on the FCC.
His Secretary of Transportation attempts to sell America's highways.
He makes someone who wishes to abolish the Department of Energy the Secretary of the Department of Energy.
He puts oil lobbyists in charge of our environmental policy.
On a different note, I found this today at the Daily Beast:
The body of Jeffry Picower, the tax shelter lawyer and accountant who made $7 billion in Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme, was found dead in the swimming pool of his Palm Beach, Florida mansion Sunday. According to the city's fire department, Picower's wife called 911 after discovering her husband's body at their oceanfront home shortly after noon and pulled him out with the help of a housekeeper. She had reportedly seen her husband swimming 15 minutes prior to finding him dead on the floor of pool. Picower benefited the most from Madoff's scam, according to the bankruptcy lawyers who alleged he'd taken out $7 billion more than he'd originally put in--a felony, for which, investigators say, he would have likely faced criminal charges. "He made 30 times what Madoff did from the scam and about a third of the missing money went to Picower," one investigator said, suggesting he may have been the mastermind behind the con or Madoff's equal "partner in crime." Investigators say Madoff documents prove that Picower frequently offered instructions as to how he could create false trades. Police said they did not know the cause of death and are awaiting the results of a full autopsy and toxicology test.
Well, maybe it would be best for all of us if George W. Bush, for once in his life, did the right thing and took one for the team like Picower.

Well, I was talking to the Fish the other day, and he told me that after a good long think... he's changed his mind.
America and the Fish can no longer coexist peacefully.
So he wanted me to tell ya Dick, straight up, that they're comin' for ya. They may glow a little around the gills, but pay that no nevermind. "Peaceful coexistence is a dream of the past," saith the Fish. "We're goin' to the mat."
Good luck, Dick. And may the Fishin' Magician protect you.

I actually had a piece of fishing equipment from Ronco...I do not even recall where I got it.
But as a kid, I fished with a cane pole and actually fed my family with the damn thing. I did of course use a bobber. I would row back to shore, gut them, scale them and bring them to mumsy for fryin.
I guess that there might indeed be some fish who feel I kind of fucked with their ancestors. Never thought about it.

It is amazing if you took a good look at everything Bush and Cheney did, I believe you will find a duo bent on destroying our country, our democracy.
But my serious question is why? Why?
I mean to destroy drinking water? It's like you don't expect us to live much longer or you'd just as soon kill off a bunch of common folk?
I mean what does a president have to do to bring on Armageddon or get a graved invitation to hell??

Well you have a contributor in the coal biz, and he gives you that crappy science paper written by a biochemist who has sold his soul:
EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE OKAY.
So you give him what he wants.
THE END
(Maybe the end of everything, but hey a scientist said it would be okay)

Snych, The reason is that they do not like or want what we consider "democracy." They are conservatives. They believe in a stratified society with relatively rigid classes. The upper class is best suited to rule a nation. The masses do not understand what is going on at the top levels and screw it up.
They also believe that they are the top class.
Equality and social justice are anathema to the conservatives.
When they use the term "democracy" they mean a government run by the wealthy for the wealthy. They fear the mob.
Obama represents both the mob and the classless society that they fear so much.

The irony here is that Obama and his crew had and have no desire to erase the lines. Just ease the pain of the masses a bit.
Which is a damn shame, really
October 26, 2009 2:43 AM | Reply | Permalink
Okay. And now he is going to on on a circuit to be paid big bucks to 'inspire' these masses he does not believe belong in his tier of the echelon.
What is that about? Just using them for money? Using them to spin his legacy? Or to try to make the Bush name more acceptable again so his brother Jeb has a shot at the Big Chair?
The reality we are dealing with is absolutely ludicrous.

My bet is a bit of all of the above. I think Bush really believes that he was correct in what he did and the way he did it. I've seen nothing to suggest that he is self-reflective or that he ever seriously admits to questioning himself. And I think he believes in that business about history treating him with kindness the way it has Harry Truman. That's what the essence of the legacy stuff is really about. From what Bush's father (Bush 41) said recently it looks like that is his belief also. That would suggest that is the belief of those close to "W", so he is probably finding his beliefs strongly reinforced by those close to him.
But there is also, as you say, the money thing. I don't know what he gets paid for this one speech, but it's very likely at a minimum in the $100,000 to $200,000 range. This operation is very probably a marketing effort being used to test the waters to see what he can do down the line. Didn't Reagan get $2,000,000 for a speech in Japan after leaving office? If "W" can show that he is a draw here in Fort Worth today and in the other motivational speeches, he is probably going to try to get some high profile big-pay speeches down the line. Fort Worth is the largest city in Texas to have voted Republican last November, and the new rail connection between Dallas and Fort Worth (Trinity Railway Express) is said to have been planning extra cars to bring people from Dallas to Fort Worth today. I suspect that "W" will be a big draw today. Since it is cold and rainy here in Fort Worth today, it probably will NOT draw too many protesters. It'll be interesting to see.
As for the political impact, for Jeb or for the Republican Party in general, I would agree that has to be part of it. I have no doubt at all the "W" is now and will remain a bigger draw than Cheney. He'll be getting pressure to work for the Party. They need it right now. It'll make the base feel good. How effective it will be with independents ...? And will it help to rally the Democrats and other leftists to the opposition? It might, as it reminds everyone what a hash Bush made of things.
Plus I think that "W" really wants and needs the ego boost of being in the center of media attention again. He went cold turkey when Obama was inaugurated, and I have little doubt that he is suffering withdrawal symptoms.
"W" is always going to get media attention for whatever he does just because he is an ex-President. That was true even for Nixon, and Nixon's disgrace as he was driven out of office was probably more widely accepted than "W's". It looks like you pretty well covered the major possibilities.

Richard, this is really a finely tuned comment and you should go ahead and turn it into a blog after this evaporates in four hours or so. Or wait and do it later this week.
I look at LBJ and Nixon and I see truly Shakespearean Tragic Characters. I get no feeling of tragedy with w or cheney, and for totally different reasons.
At any rate, your comment is well worth the read.
Thank you.

Thanks for reminding us, D.D. (ha). I used to think that Bush was pure evil, but then decided that it is plausible that the repubs nominated him and got him into the Oval Office by hook or by crook -wink- because the man is pure stupid. Either way (or both ways), cockroaches have a way of sticking around no matter how hard you bang them in the head with a cowboy boot. (I know, I used to live in Texas where the flying cockroach happens to be the state bird, and apparently once even Governor).
Anyhoo, I was supposed to write you up something on Suskind's book (speaking of Dubya) but never got round to it... though for good reason. So apologies for stiffin' you on that. Am just now catching up on the latest at TPM after an extended absence. Who can keep up anymore? The urge to go out and stick my head in the nearest sandbox is sometimes overwhelming, ya know? ...for the team like Picower.
Although it would be very messy I would rather see GW in leg irons and investigated like nobody ever before. To just have him go away wouldn't serve to enlighten the country one bit. So far we've followed the pretense that not much of consequence happened for those eight years. Which is exactly what we did with RR.
If somebody is stupid it doesn't change just because nobody says it. The same is true for the country. We brought the global financial system to the brink but not a soul in congress will admit to the fact that government policy changes at the behest of Wall Street are why that happened. And they probably won't even change it. How stupid is that?
October 26, 2009 2:52 AM | Reply | Permalink
Yeah, you got that right. As usual I sometimes laugh or just cry.
w just underlined the real problems with the economy in this country. Like I oft times say, when we came to the brink we could have changed history; we could have changed this country by bringing the oligarchy to its knees.
w is going to walk. Like Bugliosi warned and warns, w will smile and vacation and watch his children have children...w will receive accolades from the oligarchy and idiots will pay twenty bucks or two hundred bucks just to see him.
And it is a damn shame.

Strongly rec'd, though I don't wish Bush suicide. It wouldn't help anything.
I always wonder if he has a nagging feeling that becoming President wasn't such a good career plan, though. And Laura can tell her friends, what? That he may have merely been the second or third worst president ever and the jury's still out if he really was the absolute bottom worst?
Wait, if Palin becomes President, we will go up a notch! So she and he are probably pulling for Palin, by gum!

OT, just for the record...Buchanan (actually an ancestor of Pat by the way) is the worst because he was actually treasonous. Knowing that Civil War was imminent, he nevertheless sent three thousand troops to Chile. He knew the Union was over and he went ahead and sent the troops anyway.
The shame that w brought this country cannot be properly measured and yet we have a solid 20% of the population who would never admit they were wrong in voting for him.

Well, you got sending a couple thousand soldiers to Chili pre-civil war vs. invading a country unjustly (plus a myriad of other things: e.g. torture, doublespeak bills (like the "Clear Skies (heh heh) Initiative"), right erosion, and others.) Ah Matyra, I was just making the point that in 1860, we were on the verge of civil war is all. Nothin like a northern born president as a southern symp.
I saw a lady on CSPAN who wrote a recent biography of the jerk and she had come to the conclusion that he was worse than what she originally had thought before her research.
October 26, 2009 6:33 PM | Reply | Permalink
lol, which jerk? I looked up a little on Buchanan, and yes he did suck. As did Harding. Looking at this page, the color-coded Scholar Survey Results, it looks like we had a string of abysmal presidents from the 9th to 18th president (with only Polk and Lincoln doing well). Amazing that we got through that as a strong country.
October 26, 2009 6:47 PM | Reply | Permalink
To me, you can look at Buchanan in these simple terms: (1) when he entered office, there was a United States of America. (2) When he left, pretty much not. (like Gorbachev, BTW.) (3) Q: What did Buchanan do to stop this? A: Nothing. Supposedly was philosophical about it.
Claimed he would ultimately be vindicated (even Bush hasn't gone that far!).
Buchanan is a strong contender for worst, admittedly.
