Okie dokie then....Our President receives a Nobel Peace Prize without any lobbying effort on his part and even appears a little embarrassed in his short speech acknowledging that he will accept it. Only 9 months in office and he receives the Nobel Peace Prize.
And w? Eight frickin years in the Oval Office and nada. Of course, his first eight months he was not really IN the Oval Office. He was on vacation of course in Texas. I mean he was tired out having begun his run four years before he was ever chosen by the United States Supreme Court for the office. But he did have a birth certificate and everything.
But still it seems so unfair. I do not think he even got around to awarding himself the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award that he handed out to members of his cabinet every time he fired them.
Well I think George W. Bush should get some consolation prize for his efforts.
So I thought, why not award him a Clio.
The Clio Awards are given to reward creative excellence in advertising and design. They are awarded in a number of fields, including: TV, Print, Outdoor, Radio, Integrated Campaign, Innovative Media, Design, Internet, Content & Contact, and Student work.
The awards are named for Clio, the Greek Muse of history and were first given in 1959. They were expanded to include international work in 1965. The 1991 ceremony was plagued by scandal. The scheduled presenter failed to appear, and two impromptu presenters struggled to carry out the show -- a task that was made all the more difficult by the lack of a winners list. Following this, a group of investors headed by Chicago publisher Ruth Ratny reorganized the awards program and eventually sold it to Dutch-owned company VNU, which changed its name to the Nielsen Company in 2007 and is the Clios' parent company to this day.
Clio is one of the largest awards programs of its kind. Its official press release indicates that in 2007 the competition received more than 19,000 entries from all over the world and enlisted a jury of more than 110 judges from 62 countries.
Previous awards have included these gems:
Shooting gerbils out of cannons for Outpost.com
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzbMcsrK-tw
Honda, Is it not nice when things just work?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_qUjrMtMec
Lee Travino selling Dodge Monacos
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-D1OkgCoFWY
Vantriloquist selling American Tourist luggage and Chewels
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8W_lNvk8rM
Laugh Cataloguehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reprl6IQt7k
George W Bush surely should get a clio. Just look at Letterman's top ten bloopers:

George W. Bush's best myspace.com (8min less 30 secs for a commercial)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkLqDeGqZ6g&NR=1
Well, he was never an ad man, you say!!!
Well you can talk all you want about puppets in luggage or gerbils in cannons; but w knew how to sell:
Sell a war in a country that had nothing to do with the attack on our nation on 9/11/09
Sell a tax break that really only affected the top one percent of our richest citizens as a tax break for all working Americans.
Sell a piece of legislation that took away our constitutional rights as the Patriot Act.
Sell a piece of legislation that helped the corporate polluters and call it The Clean Air Act.
Sell Congress on appointing corporate yahoos to the nations highest cabinet offices; offices that are supposed to be watching the chicanery of the corporate yahoos.
In fact sell the American People on keeping the single most incompetent person to ever sit in the White House for a second term.
I mean, come on folks, comedy works.
And this Bozo should be recognized for exactly what he was.

Rec'ed.
Thanks, DD - this one's one of your very best.
I am very happy for my country, as I said elsewhere today, and very proud of my President.
We'll get out of this mess. It won't be easy, it won't be quick, it will happen.
Go Twins!

Yes Grouch, I saw your comments and I agree that this is a good thing for our country.
My President is only really hated here by about twenty percent of the population.

Well done DD. Really really smart satire.
Too bad it degrades the design field. Advertising should leave the poor artists alone. Also I have never quite gotten the name. Clio? what does the muse of history have to do with advertising? is it a cynical pun? what?

Nine Muses, officially to the Greeks anyway. Something to do with thought really. Clio, of course was supposed to represent history or historical thought.
With all the Viagra & Extend commercials you would think Erato would make more sense. hahha

Salon would have liked this.

I had only ever heard the award's name spoken; I heard "A Cleo," which was an early 60's, maybe, teevee program about a basset hound with voice-over-thoughts. A real smart-ass dog, who was, of course, smarter than its human. Ergo, Clio=basset hound. Nice award, hmmm.

I remember Cleo. More than Mama. hahahaha

Clio is motor vehicle manufactured and marketed by Renault.
And don't look now, but your icon has been populated by a male red-shafted flicker.

He and his buds sold some plurality of voters on the idea that having a beer with him meant he should be our President. Plus, that his Veed parachute strapping on the shipdeck with the sign Mission Accomplished made him viable for re-election.
And that RICHARD CHENEY would be a good Veep; he was, by the way, you know, dear. And Liz may be our first Woman President, if you need any fodder for NightMares...

Everytime I see Independence Day, I think of that fraud that 'led the free world' for eight years.
Wendy, hate is supposedly bad. But I despise w and cheney and his entire crew. See, I am getting mad again just thinking of this.

I'm sorry, I'm sorry, (sniffle, sniffle). I was just joshin' ya. (Except about Liz, that is.)
It is however, supposedly axiomatic that venting lessens anger; I don't know about hate. I'm not quite clear on what that really is, though. In your case, it isn't working. You just don't want to let it give you an ulcer or something.
For me it is still Rumsfeld. It's possible that when I look at him and hear his twisted lies and contentions, I see someone from my past. But he's the one I could have easily punched right in the kisser; not just once, either.

Okay but from your very last line, I feel GW should get the Biggest Bozo Award... maybe Cheney should get the Clio... or some consolation prize:)
I like the idea of giving Cheney the Clio...
In acknowledgment of your mastery of seriousness while delivering absolute BS, lies, and slander... You really f'd us over good...
So, we award you this cute little Clio...
And I would so love to include with these lovely awards a Grand Jury Investigation and a long trip to prison.

I guess we could call the grand jury investigations and the prison sentences 'lovely parting gifts'.

Okay DD, I think the statute of limitations has finally run out, so I can admit two things to you: (We're alone, right? Now, this is just between you and me...)
a) Around 1984, I had to attend the Clios (at Radio City Music Hall) in order to possibly accept an award. The local TV station advertising department where I worked as a scheduling co-ordinator, had been nominated, but unfortunately, ALL of the people who had actually worked on the promo had been fired, so I got to attend. (We lost.) And b), in 1990, long after I had left that job, (and the last year before things hit the fan for them), I was the off-stage announcer for the Clios.
The big ceremony that year was held at Lincoln Center in New York City (the technical awards were held separately at the ballroom of the New Yorker hotel), I was recruited by a friend who was a show-biz agent, and who was desperately looking for someone, (anyone!), that would do the job for the sheer prestige. Well, I was that idiot. (hahahaha.)
Although a number of people in the audience commented on my performance, it did not lead to any work, and so I went on to other creative pursuits ...
It still makes me laugh to think about the insanity of that show. For example, Al "Grandpa Munster" Lewis was one of the presenters, and went on for so long with a string of bad jokes, that the producer grabbed my microphone and started heckling him to get off the stage.
When my friend called me the next year to come back and reprise my efforts, I declined.

What a story!!! Damn. Of course as you know advertising is the back bone of this society.
It makes sense that they would have awards. And the youtube snippets are pretty damn funny. hahahah

Cheney's award should be special, designed just for him.
Make it a heart with a clockwork embedded in it, mounted on a shotgun and all frozen in a large ice cube.
Present it on a block with the names of the dead and wounded from Iraq, Afghanistan and Katrina inscribed on it.
He's earned it. As well as his place in Hell.

See. Another one who gets it right. ha
Yeah, I would supervise a library dedicated to George W. Bush. All our dead soldiers names, all the wounded soldiers names, right there on the monument in front of a library with only those books that told the truth.
This is a great comment Richard!!!

I think you missed the mark slightly. The Clio should go to Karl Rove. It was he who sold Bush to the nation, and organized all the ad campaigns you mentioned. Bush was just the ventriloquist's puppet.

You got that right!!!! hahaha became cheney's puppet for the most part. But Karl knew how to sell bullshit to a cattle rancher...that is for sure.
