A CONTRAST AMONG DOOLITTLES

                       Alfie Doolittle

John Doolittle

Once upon a time there was there was a Mormon attorney who wished to make a difference, strive for change and make America a better place for rich white people to live and thrive. In 1990, John T. Doolittle was elected to the House of Representatives from a district in California where gated communities and rich exurbs are the rule of the day.

And John T. Doolittle was able to do that House seat proud until January of this year; I mean what a voting record:   http://www.ontheissues.org/ca/john_doolittle.htm

Any time he could make life a little bit easier for those attempting to scrape by in gated communities, Doolittle was there doing a lot. Any time he was called upon to vote down breaks for the poor so that they could just sit around on food stamps and drink beer all day, Doolittle was there for the count.

You would never him quote Alfie Doolittle his dear departed cousin:

I'm one of the undeserving poor, I am,  up against middle-class morality all the time. What is middle-class morality? Just an excuse for never giving me anything.

And this was what Doolittle was all about, and let me tell you this man DIDALOT, not a little to further Truth, Justice & The American Way:

  • "Conservative Rep. John T. Doolittle (R-Calif.), for example, said he hoped a Bush administration would beat back efforts at campaign finance reform and gun control while dramatically cutting federal regulation. 'The power of the presidency, coupled with a Republican Congress and conservative control of the Supreme Court, is nothing short of awesome,' said Doolittle, one of DeLay's closest allies. 'This is the implementation of the rest of the 'Contract With America.'" --Washington Post, December 6, 2000.
  • "A DeLay ally, Rep. John T. Doolittle (R-Calif.), said Republicans 'are going to have to respond in kind' by filing ethics charges against key Democrats. From now on, he said in an interview, it's a matter of 'you kill my dog, I'll kill your cat.'" --Washington Post, June 15, 2004.
  • "'I do not subscribe to the theory of global warming,' he said. 'Liberals like to use pseudo-science.' He said that liberals want to implement severe restrictions and their actions 'would make everything more expensive.'" [Chester Progressive, Wednesday, Aug 16, 2006, pg 16A. (Doolittle interview with newspaper, Chester,CA)]
  • "The legislation introduced by Congressman John T. Doolittle (R-Calif.) provides for deregulating campaign finance, eliminating both contribution and expenditure limitations. It also provides for ending federal financing of presidential campaigns. Its emphasis is on improved disclosure of campaign finance information primarily through electronic filing. To amend the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 to reform the financing of campaigns for election for Federal office."

All Representatives find special projects to work on during their tenure in the People's House; or at least the good ones, and Doolittle was one of those good ones for sure. Back in 2006 it was reported that:

Most Americans couldn't locate the Northern Marianas Islands on a map if their lives depended on it-- nor could they tell you anything about the island chain. However, in the northern California district between the Sacramento suburbs and the Oregon border, more and more people are knowing an uncomfortably lot about the Northern Marianas. That's because the Republican incumbent in CA-04, John Doolittle, an incredibly corrupt and thoroughly immoral bribetaker has been all caught up in a whole slew of Abramoff-related scandals, one particularly horrible one centered in the Commonwealth-- a nice way to say "colony"-- of the Northern Mariana Islands. And the swirling controversy around the scandal is being covered by the Sacramento Bee, the district's most read newspaper.

Now that the FBI is actively investigating Doolittle's role in the pervasive Culture of Corruption in DC, his activities in the
Northern Marianas scandals are coming out. Last week, the Bee reported that the forced prostitution, slave labor, forced abortions and generally nightmarish conditions put together by villains like Tom DeLay, Bob Ney, Don Young and John Doolittle as a model working situation for a Republican Party-dominated society has become a campaign issue in CA-04.

A month before Rep. John Doolittle took actions that would help disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff win back a contract to represent the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in blocking immigration and labor reforms, he heard sworn witnesses describing some of the sordid abuses the legislation was intended to halt. At the Sept. 16, 1999, hearing before the House Resources Committee, witnesses told of deplorable working conditions, trafficking in women and forced prostitution.

Now, seven years later, Doolittle's opposition to the reforms in the
U.S. territory has become a dominant issue in his campaign for a ninth term in Congress. http://downwithtyranny.blogspot.com/2006/10/another-chapter-in-john-doolittles.html

Getting young girls employment was one of the greatest accomplishments of Doolittle during his tenure and it had nothing to do with food stamps or welfare. I mean these girls had to follow the rules in order to better their lot.

But those dirty liberals have taken it upon themselves to attack this sort of conduct and they found out how to get this epitome of conservative values by going after an underling:

"Doolittle's former chief of staff, Kevin A. Ring, went to work with Abramoff. Doolittle's wife, Julie, owned a consulting firm that was hired by Abramoff and his firm, Greenberg Traurig, to do fundraising for a charity he founded. Two sources close to the investigation said that Ring, while working for Abramoff, was an intermediary in the hiring of Julie Doolittle's firm, Sierra Dominion Financial Solutions Inc., which last year received a subpoena from the grand jury investigating Abramoff," Susan Schmidt and James Grimaldi, reported in the November 26, 2005, Washington Post.  http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=John_Doolittle/Commentary

Ring is in the midst of his trial right now, facing 127 years in prison (something Madoff would have hoped for) on seven felony counts. The trial has worn on some participants:

Crying witnesses, colorful e-mails and descriptions of lobbyists as "sugar daddies" and congressmen as their "champions" -- it's all become routine in the trial of Kevin Ring, former associate of imprisoned ex-lobbyist Jack Abramoff. With a full cast of former lobbyists and congressional staffers who have already pleaded guilty in the scandal testifying as cooperating witnesses, courtroom drama has yet to cease, and it's only bound to continue as the defense is expected to begin presenting evidence next week.
Read more: http://undertheinfluence.nationaljournal.com/2009/09/ri.   http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=103x483520

Former DOJ Chief of Staff David Ayres invoked his Fifth Amendment rights, according to this report.David Ayers, who was Ashcroft's chief of staff at the Justice Department during the Bush administration, refused to answer questions under oath about tickets he received from Abramoff's firm and any favors he may have granted for the firm's clients.

Ayers was called as a defense witness in the corruption trial of Abramoff deputy Kevin Ring. Ring faces charges that he illegally influenced federal officials by providing them with expensive meals, drinks and tickets to concerts and sporting events   http://politicalactivitylaw.com/?p=5283

In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth...(Luke 13:28)

So, in the midst of Ring's trial, Doolittle has been indicted.  Or has he?

Federal prosecutors named ex-Rep. John Doolittle (R-Calif.) as a co-conspirator Thursday in the public corruption case against former House aide-turned-lobbyist Kevin Ring. The government included Doolittle, who has not been charged with wrongdoing, on a list of 11 co-conspirators filed Thursday.

The government's list of co-conspirators also included Doolittle's wife, Julie Doolittle, as well as John Albaugh, chief of staff to then-Rep. Ernest Istook (R-Okla.) who pleaded guilty in 2008 to conspiracy to commit honest services fraud; Ann Copland, a former aide to Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) who pleaded guilty in March to honest services wire fraud; Robert Coughlin, a former top Justice Department official who pleaded guilty in 2008 to violating conflict of interest laws; Will Heaton, chief of staff to then-Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio) who pleaded guilty in February 2007 to a conspiracy charge; Laura Blackann, Doolittle's former spokeswoman and wife of Trevor Blackann who pleaded guilty in November to filing a false tax return for not reporting more than $4,100 in gifts from lobbyists; Peter Evich, Doolittle's former legislative director; Gregory Orlando, who also served as Doolittle's legislative director; former White House aide Jennifer Farley; David Lopez, Doolittle's former chief of staff and political adviser; and Ryan Thomas, a top appropriations aide to then-Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Mont.).   http://www.rollcall.com/news/38936-1.html?type=pf

Well he made it on the list of co-conspirators, But he still walks free as a bird.

Doolittle has little in common with his cousin Alfie Doolittle.  I mean you will never hear Representative Dooliittle say for instance:

I'm wanting to tell you, I'm willing to tell ya, I'm waiting to tell ya.

John T. Doolittle rather makes his cousin Alfie seem like a pillar of the community, does he not?

It says a lot about our present state of affairs in Washington that - once upon a time - this kind of story would have been widely reported as a scandal that would nearly have consumed the media. It's now received with a yawn, as if this is simply a case of a little overreach in the common practice of pay-to-play politics.

Great job of laying it all out here, DDay. I only wish the general population was paying attention.

user-pic

That's right Sleepin, this is just one big yawn.

And think about the intentional conduct of the Gang of Seven (as they are called) to funnel monies to evil corporations to use and abuse poor people and take excessive advantage of young girls.

Thanks for the kind words.

user-pic

Sleepin said;

"Great job of laying it all out here, DDay."

Heh, I remember D-Day.

user-pic

I know nothing about you, John. I see by your avatar that you are a veteran, but were you in Normandy on D-Day?

My father proudly served with the 12th Armored Division "Hellcats." He came aboard in Europe shortly after the guys secured the landing at D-Day. These boys became men quite quickly on those shores.

Thank you for your service.

user-pic

Sleepin,

Short auto bio.

I was a paratrooper with 82nd when I jumped into Normandy, I also made the Holland jump for the Bridge Too Far. I fought in the Bulge, crossed the Rhine at Cologne, helped liberate the Woebblin concentration camp near Ludwigslust and eventually wound up on the Elbe River at the end of the war.

The Hellcats your father manned were tank destroyers, but I'm sure you knew that. They had an armor piercing shell that burned through armor.
It caused the Germans to hang armored plates on the side of their tanks to take the initial hit.

Is your father still with us?

user-pic

I hope you see this, John, given the late posting.

Your resume' is humbling. I cannot pretend to know or understand what these experiences must have been like. But I can damn sure appreciate them, and say thanks for your heroic service.

My father died last January at the age of 86.

He was the oldest of five brothers, four who served in Europe in WWII. One of my favorite photos of him, in fact, is posed with the four boys in uniform standing shoulder to shoulder with their father (My grandfather) who is himself dressed in his doughboy uniform from WWI. Grandpa is the shortest of them all by far, but his expression of absolute pride dwarfs anything else in the scene.

My father became a tavernkeeper upon his return from the war, and successfully raised a family of eight kids on his earnings. I remember that on his desk he had an armored-piercing shell (@30mm perhaps) that he used as a paperweight. It always fascinated me as a boy for its density - very heavy for its size - and for its extremely sharp point.

Just a few details you might appreciate:

He had a lifelong hatred of hedgerows and shrubbery.

He had quit smoking shortly after his return home from the war, but he carried an animosity toward the Red Cross to his grave for their practice of charging GI's for smokes that had been donated to them for distribution to the soldiers.

He had in his possession a Ruger pistol and a ceremonial(?) dagger, the handle of which was inscribed with the sign of the Waffen SS. I do not know how he got these, and I never asked.

It was only after he died that we discovered photos of concentration camp prisoners that were obviously taken by his camera. It was a topic for discussion that was never broached.

On the Fourth of July, my mother used to take all us kids the short distance to the park to see/hear the fireworks. My father ALWAYS worked that night, and the jukebox was always played uncharacteristically loud that night.

Anyway, thanks for your response. I hope we manage to stay in touch. I've enjoyed your contributions here at TPM.

user-pic

Sleep,

my condolences on the passing of your father.

I can understand why he hated the hedgerows (le bocage), they were almost impenetrable, and if you did get through the Germans were waiting.

I sent a number of souvineers home, and brought a few more with me when I got out. The dagger I got I took off a Waffen SS Officer, it had the Hitler Youth Emblem on it, a red and white ceramic diamond with a Swastika in the middle. These guys were such fanatics you had to kill the SOBs twice.

When we were in Holland I bought my mom a pair of wooden shoes and sent them home. All the souvineers still exist; the shoes, the dagger, an SS helmet, an Iron Cross, a Nazi arm band, a few other odds and ends. I have a grandson who is a WWII buff and he has everything plus my Class A uniform.

Here's a little anecdote;

When we were leaving Normandy heading back to England we loaded onto an LST along with a lot of German POWs. Not long after we got out into the channel they started singing a catchy tune which turned out to be Horst Wessel, and it was so catchy that for the rest of the war it wasn't unusual to hear one of our guys, myself included. whistling or humming the tune. I still remember that tune.

Here's me on C-SPAN when they were doing an anniversary show on D-Day this past June 6. Move the time control to the 45:18 mark.

user-pic

Well Dd... some of us ladies are not that interested in looking at your naked ladies but thanks for this string on Doolittle. Interesting list of co-conspirators. Let's see how many current republican congressmen are in a mess right now?

Sanford, Ensign, Wilson, Doolittle, ties here to Coburn, ... I know there are more.

It seems these men have no fear of the law and they don't mind risking the scandals and fame. It gives them status among there peers... like Wilson.

It's almost as if they believe your just a sissy if you work within the law...

user-pic

It funny you put it that way. Vitter from Mississippi was caught purchasing the services of prostitutes shortly after the Craig incident in the mpls loo.

When Vitter re entered the repub caucus, THEY GAVE HIM A STANDING OVATION!! HA!

user-pic

Yes. Exactly.

If we take what we learned from the whole C Street/Family/Christian Mafia thing... they are living by a different set of principles. Far more important than law and status among people are money and status among those 'they' view as their 'chosen' peers.

user-pic

dday,

well, Vitter and the Repugs obviously see the hookers they frequent as entrepreneurs, small business people.

user-pic

'their peers'

user-pic

synchron says:

Well Dd... some of us ladies are not that interested in looking at your naked ladies....

Um, well, do you mind if we men look at them?

user-pic

The hypocrisy amazes me. This guy votes YES on "Federal Aid Only to Schools Allowing Voluntary Prayer" and NO on every abortion law, yet is involved not only with Abramoff but in this disgusting scandal in the Northern Marianas. And as Jeezus so aptly says, "I only wish the general population was paying attention."

Appalling. Simply appalling.

Thank you for doing all of this research, Dickon, and for bringing it to light.

I highly rec this post.

user-pic

YES YES YES!!! Family values. Fuck those hypocrites attempting to use cultural values to their benefit when THEY HAVE NO FAMILY VALUES. His voting record stinks. Sure Doolittle is out now, but he is replaced by another no good repub. Probably voting the same way.

user-pic

dick,

don't most of the worst Calif Repugs come from Orange and San Diego Counties?

user-pic

Wiiiiiiiiith a Li'tle bit
Wiiiiiiiiith a Li'tle bit
With a Li'tle bit of bloomin' luck

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNkWWy750rA

...we'll get rid of these bloomin' ars holes!

user-pic

Cville, now you have me laughing, for sure. My favorite. Truly......

with a little bit of luck, they'll go out and start supportin you. hahahahah

user-pic

Did you watch the whole thing? I learned something:

Actually, there is a stanza that really encapsulates the republican Doolittle philosophy:

"They're always throwing Goodness at you,
But with a little bit of luck a man can duck---

The Lord Above made man to help his neighbor
No matter where, on land or sea or foam --

The Lord Above made man to help his neighbor,

BUT

With a little bit of luck, with a little bit of luck, with a little bit of luck you won't be home!

Yep! Those Doolittles seem to be one of a kind.

I think you have uncovered a real possibility here, DD!

It is the bums like Liza Dolittles' father that the repubs put down, but they are actually soul-brothers!

Doolittle. Doolittle. I like it even better than the Party of NO!

WHO ARE YOU GOING TO VOTE FOR?? THE HEALTH CARE PARTY, OR THE DOOLITTLES?

user-pic

hahaha great analysis. It really is one of my favorite songs CD. no kidding.

I watch it twice a year and sing along every time.

user-pic

As far as Doolittle goes, I remember the Muckrakers were watching him for awhile. But then I lost track. Why is he an ex-Congressman? Did he not run or did he run and lose?

Talk about an original piece of work, may he rot in hell. (Blesses herself.)

user-pic

He bowed out and another repub took the nomination and won the election Seashell.

He knew he was headed for a tough time.

user-pic

dickday,

California Republicans are real lovers of the Military/Industrial complex. I'm surprised only Duke Cunningham is in jail. I always suspected Doolittle and Duncan Hunter got out of Congress right before indictments. Jerry Lewis stayed, maybe he wasn't too dirty.

During the Duke Cunningham investigation it was reported that Cunningham and a number of Republicans had a room at the Watergate where they would meet to play poker, drink, and host hookers. Porter Goss' name rose as someone who attended these parties and soon after he resigned as CIA director.

Republicans and hookers again.

user-pic

Do not forget John, those repubs on C-Street were doing all these things right in their sacred hall.Ha!!!

Oh and this from Wiki:

California's 4th congressional district covers the northeastern corner of California along Route 395, covering El Dorado, Placer, Nevada, Sierra, Plumas, Lassen, and Modoc counties, as well as parts of Butte County including Oroville and a small portion of Sacramento County including Orangevale. The district is an intense swing district that is currently represented by Tom McClintock, a Republican who was elected in 2008.
user-pic

How far this Dolittle has fallen from the great Dr. John Dolittle:

ONCE upon a time, many years ago when our grandfathers were little children--there was a doctor; and his name was Dolittle-- John Dolittle, M.D. "M.D." means that he was a proper doctor and knew a whole lot.

He lived in a little town called, Puddleby-on-the-Marsh. All the folks, young and old, knew him well by sight. And whenever he walked down the street in his high hat everyone would say, "There goes the Doctor!--He's a clever man." And the dogs and the children would all run up and follow behind him; and even the crows that lived in the church-tower would caw and nod their heads.

Instead "our" John Dolittle is the evil twin ot the good doctor. Children scream in horror and dogs call the big cats to bury his shit.

user-pic

This is sooooooo sweet Rowan. Thank you for this quote and link

user-pic

There is something wrong with the plan for wiring the neurons in our brains. Some people end up with their brains badly miswired. Our inability to determine if that miswiring is a republican or democratic trait headlines the issue. I think it's both. Politicians think in political terms. They don't really do facts. That is why they're called politicians. It is also why they should never be placed in charge of anything.

In the world of computers security researchers continue to search for ways to create indecipherable methods to encrypt data. If they could figure out what is behind the indecipherable operation of the human brain and mimick it they'd be all set.

user-pic

Yeah TPC you got that right. But the pols think is code. No respect for the human condition or anything.

What can I sell.

Maybe I am just naive, but I think Pelosi believes in something. I think My President believes in something. I think this SEn. Whitehouse does too as well as many dems, certainly not all of them.

But Boehner and McConnel, they do not really BELIEVEin something. As least i do not think so.

user-pic

Evening Dick. I guess to answer your question you would have to do an analysis of the votes of individual senators and reps over time. You'd have to determine how consistently they stick to a single notion or idea and also try and establish the primacy of ideas to see if there is a logical hierarchy at work.

I suspect if you did this and viewed the result categories graphically you would have a completely random presentation. You would likely be able to draw all manner of conclusions about how the political landscape guides events rather than anything that might be about the needs of citizens or global factors. That is, politics and ideological distortions will have been revealed as guiding events. Which of course, is way screwed up.

user-pic

Back in the 1990s, various "green" groups were trying to get some climate-change work done, and were stymied by the team of DeLay and Doolittle.

I always thought that was ... appropriate, somehow. Their names reflect their nature: when change is needed, they delay and do little!

user-pic

hahahahah DELAY AND DOOLITTLE......

The new mantra of the Republican Party.

Well done. I hereby award you the Knightly Line of the Day Award for this here TPMCafe Site, given to all of you from all of me.

This makes my night or morning or whateverthehell this is. hahahahaha

user-pic

Perfect!!!

user-pic

The only thing worse than a Republican is a religious Republican.

user-pic

The only thing worse than a religious Republican is a religious Republican with its head up its ass.

user-pic

hahahahaha

speechless

user-pic

I am finishing this book on how the religious movement within George W. Bush's administration just stripped science from the WH message. And how the corps took advantage of all this.

THOSE DAYS ARE GONE. For awhile anyway.

user-pic

My Fair Lady is my favorite movie of all time, I must have seen it 50 times, but if its on TV today, it will be 51.

At the end of the song 'I Could Have Danced All Night' Audrey Hepburn is laying in the bed and the camera moves in for a close up of her face while she's smiling, absolutely angelic!

OYM A GUD GURL OY YAM!

user-pic

Me toooo John. I also enjoy the 30's Pygmalion.

And it is a fun play to read. Like all of Shaw's plays.

But I cannot think of a movie that I have seen more times than My Fair Lady.

user-pic

dickday,

and everytime I see it I enjoy it as much as the first time I saw it.

user-pic

All I want is a room somewhere,
Far away from the cold night air.
With one enormous chair,
Aow, wouldn't it be loverly?
Lots of choc'lates for me to eat,
Lots of coal makin' lots of 'eat.
Warm face, warm 'ands, warm feet,
Aow, wouldn't it be loverly?
Aow, so loverly sittin' abso-bloomin'-lutely still.
I would never budge 'till spring
Crept over me windowsill.
Someone's 'ead restin' on my knee,
Warm an' tender as 'e can be. 'ho takes good care of me,
Aow, wouldn't it be loverly?
Loverly, loverly, loverly, loverly

user-pic

Doolittle sucks. No argument there.

However, I would quibble just slightly with your "gated communities" refrain. Doolittle represented the 4th district, which, like the rest of CA, is gerrymandered to hell. Yes, there are gated communities in the north and eastern parts of the Sacramento area that the district touches, but it also contains the foothills, the Lake Tahoe area and extends all the way up to the Oregon border. The majority of the district is actually rural.

user-pic

Thanks DF. I was shooting blind. hahahaha

Oh and thanks for the link. This is a subject that really riles me. Those in power just wish to keep their seats safe. (Cover their arses?)

But look at the change overs in the last two elections. Nothin's for sure, that's for sure.

user-pic

Like your new blogspot ... but I must protest:

a> That isn't a lady
b> The statue isn't even naked!

Maybe I shoulda checked before I invited the fellas over to look at naked chicks ... and Q's exploration of canadian sexuality didn't go over well either! Stupid Americans.

user-pic

hahahahhah. More to cum, so to speak!!!!hahahaha
