ORGANIZING FOR A BETTER AMERICA

That which shrinks

Must first expand.

That which falls

Must first be strong

That which is cast down

Must first be raised.

Before receiving,

There must be giving.

This is called perception of the nature of things.

Soft and weak overcome hard and strong.

Fish cannot leave deep waters.

And a country's weapons should not be displayed.

Tao Te Ching (Ch-36)

Race-based attacks and criticism of President Obama have been on the rise during the dog days of August. And they're not just happening at health care town hall protests.A reader sent over a picture of a group of protesters camped outside Rep. Susan Davis's (D-Calif.). "Neighborhood Day" event this past week, brandishing signs calling the president a Black Supremacist and suggesting he's a Nazi disciple.

"Black National Socialism Is Not Utopia," reads one poster.  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/28/race-based-protests-direc_n_271129.html

Okay. There are a few 'nuts' out there. I am watching the Sentinel today as I write this. The Secret Service has 'nut threats' posted all over the office walls. Hundreds of them. Threatening to kill and eat the president, threatening to nuke Baltimore. You name it, and its all there. In the movie the white president can walk and chew gum at the same time (although his First Lady is getting bonked by a 'Sentinel' without his knowledge.)  So that means it cannot be w or Obama.

I always imagined that there were hundreds of letters to the White House in the fifties from women claiming they were carrying the seed of Ike. The nuts will always be with us. It used to be in the form of a letter written in crayon.

But we are in a new age.

It really started for Glenn Beck about a month ago:

This morning on Fox and Friends, Fox host Glenn Beck accused President Obama of being "a racist."

The group was discussing the recent Gates controversy, and Beck exclaimed that Obama has "over and over again" exposed himself as "a guy who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture. I don't know what it is..." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/07/28/fox-host-glenn-beck-obama_n_246310.html

So Mediamatters.com and something called Color of Change. ORG along with others got this boycott going on. As of Friday, 46 sponsors have dropped beck. It got so bad Fox put him on vacation. Well, as they say, beck is back.  And his ratings are through the roof which tells me the boycott is not working. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/06/glenn-becks-obama-racist_n_253264.html

Nothing really beats Glenn Beck when he goes on a full-tilt victimization binge. Here's how he ended his show, or so our intern tells me:

BECK: I'm tired of being a sheep. I'm tired of being a victim. I'm tired of being pushed around. You know what? The gloves come off.

I have no idea who is pushing Glenn Beck around! He gets his very own television show and radio show and book deals and he gets to say whatever in the world he feels like saying and people give him millions and millions of dollars for it. He can have, if he wants, his very own pony at his gigantic and secluded manse to ride on whenever he wants and can hire someone to bake him delicious funnel cakes any time he likes! These are the hard won perks of being a celebrity, earned from having a dedicated fan base.

Nevertheless, today, the gloves come off! A preview: the hands underneath those gloves will be free of callouses and as soft as an infant's tush!   http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/28/as-sponsors-flee-the-igle_n_271321.html

THE GLOVES ARE COMING OFF? SAY WHAT?

Take another look at this video that is all over the web, including Café:

http://crooksandliars.com/david-neiwert/obamas-army-glenn-beck-sees-scary-bl

This aint a note written in crayon. This is national television folks. And it is national television that gives people the idea that carrying arms to rallies is a bold new idea. It is national television that tells you a sign that says black Nazis will get your ugly face on tv.

They were all gathered to talk about the "army" of "thugs" that President Obama is planning to gather under the combined umbrellas of ACORN, SEIU, Color of Change and whatever other insidious "radicals" Beck believes he's uncovered.

And what does this "army" of "thugs" look like?

Why, they're all black people, of course.

Watch the segment and observe the examples he offers of the kinds of "thugs" he says Obama intends to incorporate into his army: some gun-toting Black Panthers, a shot from a Louis Farrakhan sermon before a Nation of Islam gathering, and a group of young black men doing military-style exercises.

This, as he explained earlier in the show, will be "Obama's SS."

So we now can see the arc of Beck's thesis this week: He was right to call President Obama an anti-white racist because he is this very moment forming an army of militant black thugs to take over your white neighborhoods and threaten your children and impose a liberal fascist state. Crooks&liars.

This man is psychotic.

Getting back to crayons, check this gem out with beck on a white board splainin things:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/28/as-sponsors-flee-the-igle_n_271321.html

glenn beck has no idea what oligarchy means, let alone how to spell it.

See beck was gomer pyle to me. An idiot. Who cares what he says? Except he is far more dangerous than I first thought. See how this fits into what is going on in the real world:

Earlier this week, Idaho Republican gubernatorial hopeful, Rex Rammell, said he'd buy a license to hunt Obama. Meanwhile, Rep. Lynn Jenkins, (R-Kans.) expressed her wish that the Republican Party would find a "great white hope" to take on the president in the next election.

Picture a guy who hates black people. Hell he hates all minorities. He has guns all over the place and other men who think the same way are his friends. And he not only gets the message from a loathsome rat like beck that blacks are arming and ready to kill him. He gets the message from high up politicians.

But fathead dobbs is actually taking this kind of thing even farther:

Washington, D.C. -- Today, Media Matters for America President Eric Burns issued an open letter to CNN President Jonathan Klein regarding prime-time anchor Lou Dobbs' scheduled appearance on September 15 and 16 at the "Hold Their Feet to the Fire" legislative advocacy event and rally sponsored by the anti-immigration organization Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). FAIR, an organization that has been designated a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center and that has been sharply criticized for its racially-tinged ads, was founded by John Tanton, who has a long history of making racist statements and espousing racist beliefs.

CNN show to lend prominence to groups such as FAIR. The attention and legitimacy he gave to the "birther" movement -- and CNN's condoning of his actions -- did real damage to that credibility. His participation in the upcoming FAIR rally would do further, serious damage. We urge you to finally acknowledge that Mr. Dobbs' actions in this and other contexts are inconsistent with the reputation that CNN strives to maintain."   http://mediamatters.org/press/releases/200908280026

Dobbs is organizing these people. His little town meeting will be witnessed by groups who carry guns and wish to kill Hispanics coming over our southern border.

THE ARMING OF A NEW FORCE OF EVIL IN THIS COUNTRY HAS BEGUN.

I find the racial aspects of the opposition to all things Obama disturbing to say the least. Beck is a complete tool who knows how to pander to other racist tools. I really liked your sentence: "He can have, if he wants, his very own pony at his gigantic and secluded manse to ride on whenever he wants and can hire someone to bake him delicious funnel cakes any time he likes!"

One characteristic of people who have authoritarian personalities it that they are biased against more than one group. Not just Blacks. If they are biased against one group, they are biased against many others. But Blacks are convenient here in America.

The American culture of Racism just provides one more group for such people to hate, and the long history of American repression of African-Americans gives them an extensive vocabulary and set of images with which to express their fear, anger and hatred.

There'll be a lot of anti-Black rhetoric, leading to action against them. But the crazies have a lot of targets of their hatred. If there isn't a clear label, they make up the label 'liberal' to apply to those they hate without some clear generic reason. Racism is only one of many 'isms they will be using. If it weren't Race it might be religion or ethnicity.

A complete tool. Interesting choice of words.

rush does not need anything more in life either.

No kids, no wife, just his cat evidently.

user-pic

dd,

Great post.

I checked out the media matters link, but what isn't clear is if the appearance of Dobb's is for his radio show or CNN. Do you know which umbrella?

It's just horrific what is going on - I guess I was extremely naive in not realizing just how much bigotry is still alive and festering in our country. Tragic. Heartbreaking. Ignorance.

And the repubs leadership just remains silent as they 'goose' the masses to do their dirty work.

It seriously makes me sick at heart and of body.

Thanks for post.

Rec'd.

Auntie, I have to go back and look. I tell everybody that I just love Mediamatters if I had money I would give it to them all the time.

They have staffers--I assume college students--who are assigned to listen to the spewers of garbage all day. hahahahaha

This stuff would go unchallenged.

There are hundreds of thousands of dangerous people within our borders who not only have birth certificates but automatic weapons.

And fathead and gomer are inflaming the situation.

user-pic

Well, this is great, dick. It is ugly to watch it all, and have it rattle around in our brains. I'm not sure what "tool" really means, so I don't know if I agree with Miguelito it. Beck is a favorite in our town; the caffe-klatch guys at the local grocery loooove him, and believe in him. I think that he found a niche for his extreme hateful nonsense, and is making a bundle from it; how sad is that? But I do think he is pathological enough to believe what he spews. When he is the middle of a rant, it is as though there is a feedback-loop from his shouted hate-speech that goes back to his ears and brain, and gets amplified there. He does the same with guests like Malkin: he borrows the energy of his guests' hatred, and the perceived approval of his rant gins him up even more, until he is spitting saliva and his eyes go all googley, and his mouth starts screeching with absolutely no monitor on it.
It is fascinating to watch; it's akin to the people who can't unglue their eyes from an auto accident.
Besides the obvious effect he and others are having on the people whose irrational fears cause them to purchase more and more firearms, and take the classes in their use, I see another bad effect. The chemicals triggered in people who internalize this nasty garbage change them. They become amped up on adrenaline and the leftover toxins from being "all freaked out and no place to go." Without muscle action, fight or flight, there is discomfort. It is also making them more stupid, all this weird chemistry. Remember how we were urged by Rummy and Cheney to "be vigilant"? To buy duct tape and plastic? Same sort of thing, but this reacist creepiness has some potential targets right here, and they are pretty visible. Scratch that-really visible. Who will stop this, or is it even stoppable? It is all about the snakes and toads some folks have had living in their heads for a long time now.
I hate it.
Thanks for doing this post.

user-pic

and the perceived approval of his rant gins him up even more, until he is spitting saliva and his eyes go all googley, and his mouth starts screeching with absolutely no monitor on it."

Quite a rant Wendy. This is pretty funny.

Who will stop this? No one can. But it is fun to watch these organizations we support, cause this buffoon a lot of pain.

user-pic

Pardon me?

user-pic

Your comment got to me. This description of beck should be published somewhere. ahhaha

user-pic
Tragic. Heartbreaking. Ignorance.

There used to be laws against inciting riots and fostering hatred.

A little enforcement would be good. It couldn't hurt to put a little heat on the FCC.

user-pic

There are lines that I think shitforbrains crossed.

His employers have to be the ones they go after first Bwak. That would make a difference.

user-pic

If you want to defeat something you must let it grow strong.

Man, I love that you post verses of the Tao. It's a great 10 extra minutes of reflective contemplation at various points during the day.

user-pic

Tao, I read this everyday since I found it. Purchased this translation in the early seventies. ha

This way I have to read it every day. I read a few verses and find one that seems somehow 'relevant' to what I am doing. I have to retype it. And review it.

So reading the Tao is now part of my day. NOBODY has scoffed at this idea at all.

Funny how things just come to us...

user-pic

I'm curious what you think (if you have an observation) about the Bhagavad Gita. It holds an equally important place in my life as the Tao. I become ecstatic when a part of the Tao fits another part of the Gita. It is like a chemical process where a neurotransmitter meets its unique receptor.

user-pic

Not much. I have read of it and After Tao I will be going to other sources like the BG. Someone hear holds dear the I Ching.

I find that some of these should be read outside. Although, after my readings, I end up 'carrying them with me.' I can stare at the pond or a few ducks or a willow....people probably think I am mentally challenged. hahahaha

But I can do that with old buildings downtown--all six blocks of them.

user-pic

Thanks. When you do read it, this is one of the better translations:
http://www.amazon.com/Bhagavad-Gita-Eknath-Easwaran/dp/0915132354

user-pic

Is Barney Fife in one of those old buildings? Give him my regards!

user-pic

Jeez, and when y'all were speaking of the Tao te Ching, i thought it was a different translation of the I Ching. The phrases seem to resonate with each other, though the Tao seems even more inscrutable to me. Thank goodness ya'' can spend more time gettin' the drift!
I have the Wilhelm/Baynes I Ching translation, and I confess I learned it like a good Hippie, more through Osmosis than Study. (smile)

user-pic

Who knew you could make so much money without knowing how to spell 'oligarchy'?

Good blog, dd. Once again I learned something.

And a country's weapons should not be displayed.

And its stupid people should not have their own tv shows. Sheesh. How hard is that to figure out?

user-pic

hahhahahaah. Quayle is doing well also I hear. hahah

People who watch beck should be watching reruns of Gunsmoke and stuff. Keep them busy. And us safe.

user-pic

I wonder if the last two lines of that Tao Te Ching verse was originally with the rest of the verse?

user-pic

I thought that too Richard. You know the Iliad was supposedly 'written' in the eighth century BC. But what the Homer school was 'reading' in say the fifth century BC was probably different and it is certainly different from what we have now.

There is real CSI going on literature and linguistics of course.

I read this several times today, of course.

I cannot 'relate' but I love mystery. I like it sometimes when things do not add up!!

user-pic

Wot is that fathead doing in that nice shirt with that nice flag?!!

user-pic

thats shitforbrains beck. Don't mix him up with fathead dobbs. hahahahaha

Why on earth he has an English Flag......who knows?

You just gave me an idea. He is a grown up dork. A dork. People took his lunch money.

THIS IS ALL PAYBACK

user-pic

Sometime last week Melissa Harris-Lacewell (Professor, Princeton) appeared on Countdown. She listed the three things that she expects to trigger violence.

(1) A certitude about their position. A kind of religiosity. The certitude that you know the right way to do things.

(2) A belief that your family or your way of life is under attack.

(3) Your capacity to dehumanize your enemy. Your belief that they are not as good as you.

I made notes when she said it. Every item on the list is there right now. Beck and Lou Dobbs are stoking them all. FOX exists to stoke those items.

user-pic

I believe this is correct but I would divide number three into too separate characteristics.

user-pic

Well I like this Melissa already.

THE FEAR. Selling fear and righteousness.

Now take these three attributes and pin them on fifty protesters, many of whom are carrying guns...

user-pic

The thing is that the media are stoking these characteristics, not damping it down.

The blowup is inevitable. It's not "if." It's "when." And it won't be long now.

What I am less certain of but still suspect is that the media will not report a lot of the smaller incidents. Not interesting enough. Then the crazies will take that as a challenge to do something big enough to report.

user-pic

Well, here's another one, on KJCT8 station site, via the denver post:

GRAND JUNCTION (KJCT) -- Debate over health care reform has gotten many people fired up. But comments attributed to a local man are causing quite a bit of concern.

Grand Junction Police are investigating reports of death threats made towards Colorado Congressman John Salazar.

According to police, the threat came during last Monday's heath care protests, outside the Democratic Representative's Grand Junction office.

It is believed the man is a member of the Western Slope Conservative Alliance. His name has not been released and the investigation is still ongoing.

According to the Denver Post, a witness reported the threat and took a picture of the person, but did not know his name.

Salazar's Grand Junction staff say they became especially concerned last Thursday after they say the suspect visited their Grand Junction office.

They say he was with Mesa County Commissioner Janet Rowland and other alliance members, who came to hand deliver a town hall invitation to the Representative.

Commissioner Rowland told the Denver Post she had no idea a member of her group had threatened Salazar. She says if she'd known, that person would not have been invited.

(I had posted last week about Janet Rowland's and another commissioner's inflammatory comments. I was worried by the tone; they were getting ramped up before the Obama family's visited.

John Salazar is the Rep. for 3rd CD, where I live. He is, of course, Ken's little brother, and about as Blue a Dog as you will likely find, but he has done one or two good things environmentally. He is not someone you might have guessed would be a target, but that's what's getting crazy about all this. Pretty soon even Michelle Bachman will be getting threats from the same folks she is ginning up.)

user-pic

Exactly what Richard is talking about Wendy.

THIS IS SCARY SHITE.

I wish I could put your comment on DIGG OR something.

user-pic

Pretty soon even Michelle Bachman will be getting threats from the same folks she is ginning up.

What people do not realize is that you can only be responsible for opening up the first can of crazy. After that, all bets are off. Bachmann will be wondering what happened and honestly feel she had nothing to do with it. And, honestly, I will believe she is very much resposible for what happen.

user-pic

She will not feel bad about it, she will feel a perverse satisfaction. Bachmann, Palin, Beck, Limbaugh, and their sordid ilk are consciously issuing thinly-veiled incitements to both individual and mob violence.

It's almost a pity that none of it will be directed toward them.

user-pic

Their day will come, Grouch. There is no doubt their day will come. Invite violent chaos and then try to control it. Never happens. It grows a life of it's own and it is the survivors who then battle to see who's on top when the dust finally does settle.

user-pic

Hey DD -

I'm all the way down here at the bottom so you probably won't see this. BUT, your post made me think of the "editorial" Larry Wilmore had on the Daily Show a few weeks ago. It was really funny, but also nervous - funny because it's too true.

At one point he says (in reference to a town hall protester), "you want YOUR America back? Tell that that to the Indians," then adds, "no one 'gets America back.' You keep it until someone takes it from you."

It seems these people, these crazy, well-armed wingnuts, are just bracing themselves because they know "their America" is being yanked from them by individuals who are smarter than they are.

It's an intellectual revolution. Unfortunately, we've never had a revolution in this country that hasn't been bloody.

http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-august-11-2009/reform-madness---white-minority

user-pic

Thanks for the link Burnie. Pretty great stuff.

Oh and if you get a chance just catch Richard's comment and compare it to Wendy's right above you.

user-pic

Yeah, I know of the comm theory Richard's post is quoting. I'm teaching a social movement rhetoric course this semester and have a few things I should scan and send you.

If you get a chance, look at Malcolm X's "ballot or the bullet" speech - you'll see similarities in the rhetoric you're seeing from the right now. It's bizarre - people who are for all intents and purposes a part of the Institution (or, at least defending the status quo) using the rhetoric typically employed by a minority demanding change. It should be the health care REFORMISTS who are speaking this way, not the people who are resisting change. It's like falling through the looking glass and trying to demand sense from the Duchess.

The world is turned on its head, and to say it's scary is an understatement.

user-pic

I Ching, Tao te Ching. It's a very expansive ideology. If you ever want to live a very simple life, you have to be a Republican, because then, no reading is required. You merely espouse a belief in Cha-Ching! :-{)> Great post, DD. If only there was an antidote for the plague that is Glen Beck. I hope the CDC is working on it.

user-pic

Thanks Gregor.

cha-ching. Very gooooooooooood.

user-pic

Ah, come on dick! Gregor should get the award. That made me and my husband howl!!!!!

Cha-Ching!!

user-pic

hhaahaha. It was 3:30 in the AM Wendy. I was just packing up.

I give Gregor awards all the time. I have to spread them out, lest I come across as being duplicitous and prone to favor my friends. hahahahaahah

user-pic

Awwww, shucks! Didn't know he won lots of them! His bearded smiley (no, goatee-ed) face is hilarious, too!
Yes, you have to be careful of that there PRONEing.

user-pic

I feel like shrinking this morning but I must expand. Your quote from the Tao at the top of your post can be carried from here over to the authoritarian personalities, the mean-spirited, the control freaks, the agents provocateur, the rec'hackers, etcetera that are demoralizing written life at the cafe.

But try as they might, no one can stop the expansion of the universe, not even a republican in drag, or Glenn Beck.

You give everything to us.
GREAT post, and so timely DD!

Nice, strato. Those were a lot of comments to read; I'm still mulling it over. We really have a hard time hearing each other i think.
If you ask dick to email your email address, i can send some pictures your way.
Do ya know the Subdudes? I heart them.
"She's laughin' at birds
She thinks they're fun-neeee!"

Why thank you Strato. Just when I thought this blog had faded into the darkness.
