Hey, You Still Want Me To Mow The Lawn?

Heaven and earth last forever.

Why do heaven and earth last forever?

They are unborn,

So ever living.

The sage stays behind, thus he is ahead.

He is detached, thus at one with all.

Through selfless action, he attains fulfillment.

Tao Te Ching (Ch-7)

  • "My brother need not be idealized or enlarged in death beyond what he was in life, to be remembered as a good and decent man, who saw wrong and tried to right it, saw suffering and tried to heal it, saw war and tried to stop it" -Teddy's eulogy for brother Robert Kennedy, June 1968.

MORTGAGE DISCREPANCIES

...look at the fact that 18.6 million homes in this country are now sitting vacant, more than at any other time since the Census Bureau began tracking that figure in the 1960s. And that 2.8% of U.S.  mortgage loans are now at least three months in arrears, up from 1.4% a year ago. That rate is projected to peak in early 2009

This article is ten months old. This is the kind of economy our New Administration walked into.  The numbers are staggering. But sometimes in the midst of tragedy--we discover comedy, true comedy.

You see, sometimes, mistakes are made.

DENROY

Some limey by the name of Denroy Bell was relaxing in his English flat when he received a call from a friend. You see Denroy owned a piece of real estate in Florida and his friend lived next door to his American residence.  He was being notified that some strange people were changing the locks on his home and emptying his pool.

"It was like the army came up and took over the house," Esther Goshop, told Denroy.  Citi-Residential Mortgage Company had decided to foreclose its mortgage on this property.

Just one problem. As it turns out, Denroy Bell didn't even have a mortgage with the bank.

Denroy is seeking reimbursement for the cost of installing new locks and cleaning his pool. I am sure that his attorney will seek a little more by way of compensatory damages than the cost of a few locks and a pool cleaning.

ANNA

Anna Ramirez came home one day after a hard day at work and found all of her possessions thrown helter skelter upon her front lawn.  An official standing in from of her home gave her an hour to get the rest of her stuff and leave. Washington Mutual Mortgage company, a subsidiary of Chase was not fooling around. It wanted satisfaction for its mortgage that was not being paid.

So the homestead was put up on the auction block and the $250,000 house was sold for just under 90 grand.

"This came out of nowhere," Ramirez said. "The bank took the house from right under my feet."

Ooooooooooooops.  Anna did not have a mortgage with Chase or Washington Mutual.

Anna is seeking some reimbursement for her problems. She had some real losses related to broken furniture and stuff. Anna will receive much more compensation than this with the help of the third year law student who lives with his parents down the street.  http://james4america.wordpress.com/2009/08/19/ooops-wrong-house-sold-in-foreclosure-sale/

TED

Well, mortgage companies can even screw up even when they are foreclosing on the right home.

Ted Poetsch was having lunch and packing up a few last-minute things at his Minneapolis home, thinking he had an hour before the inspector came to board up the house. But, while he was taking a final walk down memory lane and pondering, the inspector came early and boarded it up while old TED was still in it.

Ooooooooooooops.

Poetsch called his lawyer, who called the city, who called 911. Finally, after three hours, a policeman came to pry the boards off his front door and let him out.

City officials said Poetsch's brief incarceration in his own home was an "unprecedented mistake."

I would bet that Ted's lawyer wrote that quote down, the one from the 'City Officials' and he will probably cut and paste that gem in a brief or something.

AL

Atlanta resident Al Byrd was having a normal Monday when he got a strange call from the lawn guy, who asked Byrd if he still wanted him to finish the lawn.

Byrd replied -- Of course! Why wouldn't I?

"Because they're tearing down the house," the lawn guy replied.

Well, it seems that the mortgage company had all of its papers in order. I mean the mortgage was way behind in payments, the proper papers had been filed in court and the title was duly transferred to the bank.  Alls well, so to speak.

And the bank sent the proper people out to look at the home and sure enough, the property is worth more without the structure that looked like a disaster area.  So the 'new owner' hired the proper demolition experts and everything was going as planned.

But it appears the wrecking crew got the wrong address.

But do not worry about Al. I mean all he has to do is send somebody over to the bank who was thinking about becoming an attorney some day and Al should receive five times what the house was worth and the bank will probably be more than happy to pay off any balance owing on any mortgage that might have once been linked to his homestead.

Eulogy

Ted Kennedy knew the rich and powerful. He came from the richest caste in this country. The people he grew up with were all from that caste.

He knew they did not 'earn' their way.  He knew they all fucked up from time to time like the rest of us. He also knew that when members of the highest caste screwed up it was usually the powerless who paid the price.

Teddy fought for mortgage reform. He also fought for food stamps, for welfare rights, for education reform that would open doors to people who would normally be shut out of the system. He fought for health care reforms for 45 years.

He had times of despondency over the years. Lost his brothers, all three of them. He almost lost his entire career at a very young age.  Hell he almost died in the plane crash.  Bet he had problems with his spine much like his brother John.

But he had an attitude toward life that echoed men like the two Roosevelts.  We can do this. We can change.

So many times in my life I would look at my government and think, there is no hope.

Senator Kennedy saw it all as a challenge.

He will be missed.

Ah dd, this is brilliant! Truly.

How did u get these 'stories' about the homeowner's and mortgage companies?

Really interested in follow up post on the final resolutions for these homeowners who were so abused.

And yes, Teddy always persevered and was usually successful in his quest to overcome obstacles, both of his own and for others. He will be missed greatly.

Rec'd.

user-pic

Thank you Auntie. Just played with google for a couple hours yesterday. Funny stories. But they are funny because the victims made out like bandits--at least that is my guess. hahahah

user-pic

I'd say your mow de lawn stories gave the banks the coup de grass. :-)P

user-pic

Professor you probably will not even read this four day late response.

BUT I JUST GOT THE JOKE. HAHAHAHAHAHA

user-pic

He will indeed be missed. Much as Al misses his house...

user-pic

You got that right CL

user-pic

Who will be our champion now? I would like to nominate you, Dickon.

Long ago, a great American writer began one of his best known works thus: The old man was dreaming about the lions.

Well, I'm awake, I'm graying but not yet "old" - at least I don't necessarily feel old, most of the time anyway - and there is only one lion I'm missing tonight.

Flawed? No doubt.

Wise? If we have ever seen anyone in public life learn from earlier mistakes, and do it on a very public stage, we have seen it in the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy. The ability to learn from experience and mistakes, and integrate that learning into a long and richly varied career, was a defining characteristic of Sen. Kennedy's working life.

Well-born, gregarious, gifted, (all too) human, all this and more we can say about the Senator, and the man.

And I burn with a cold fury at those who threw Mary Jo Kopechne up every time his name was mentioned. They didn't give a damn about her, except as a tool of derogation. Not a one of them, the powerful the well-connected, and the churlish civilians who bought into the lies, not a one of them would have taken the time to give the young woman, whose life was cut tragically short that sad, sad night, the time of day in any alternate setting where they might have encountered her. She served their purpose only so long as she was useful as a tragic memory.

The man rose back up from that tragedy and learned. He learned and he used that knowledge to serve the interest even of those who would insult him, even of those who would insult the memories of his two assassinated brothers.

And who in our lifetimes has had to bear such losses - two bright and capable brothers, both political assassination victims? And the losses of more family members over his 77 years.

May all our leaders be made of such "flawed" stuff.

The old man was dreaming about the lions...

This is very poetic Grouch. No offense to others but your comment seems to grab me more.

Although, I swear, I have been tearing up all day.

user-pic

I rec this comment. The man ended his life evolved.

user-pic

I hereby recommend this comment.

The lion apparently had a huge enough heart to include everyone in it...the poor, the uninsured, the children, the struggling, the downtrodden, the under-represented. His heart took them all in, and gave them a voice.

Imperfect, he was. Maybe that's why he took them on.

xo, Grouch

You are eight years old. It is Sunday evening. You have been granted an extra hour before bed.
The family is playing Monopoly. You have been told that you are big enough to join them.
You lose. You are losing continuously. Your stomach cramps with fear. Nearly all your possessions are gone The money pile in front of you is almost gone.Your brothers are snatching all the houses from your streets. The last street is being sold. You have to give in. You have lost.
And suddenly you know that it is only a game. You jump up with joy and you knock the big lamp over. It falls on the floor and drags the teapot with it.
The others are angry with you, but you laugh when you go upstairs.
You know you are nothing and know you have nothing. And you know that not-to-be and not-to-have give immeasurable freedom.

I have thought these sentiments often.

I have nothing to lose...or now very little materially.

But if the gov is hacking into my pc, what the hell would they be looking for.

They do not care about me. hahahahahah

THEREFORE I AM FREE.

Never read this but the author is 'familiar' so I shall google when I google into the night. ha

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_hazard
Moral hazard is the prospect that a party insulated from risk may behave differently from the way it would behave if it were fully exposed to the risk.

I guess bankers who kick families to the street, or a Nation that stands by and wrings it’s hands, doesn’t have to reflect upon morality? Just those less fortunate who have lost their jobs, and homes should be moral
The Hypocrites, tell me what this means “to the Republic for which it stands?”

Yes you better keep mowing the lawn;

otherwise if they short sale the house and because you failed to preserve it's value. You'll be responsible for the deficiency. Where are your moral values?

user-pic

Resistance, sometimes you astound me. I hereby render unto you the Knightly Line of the Day for this here TPMCafe Site given to all of you from all of me for this gem:

Thank you DD.
Truth be known, I look forward to what you write.
It truly stimulates the mind.

Thank you DD

I'm having trouble even thinking about how screwed up things are right now. Perhaps tomorrow or the next day. But not today.

user-pic

TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY.

My drunken father's favorite line.

We have tomorrow. But your family appears safe right now.

Tomorrow is another day Stilli.

user-pic

Thanks, Arthur...appreciate your prayers...can't tell you how much that means to me.

Once upon a time I felt this nation up to any challenge that came along. Needless to say I am reconsidering this.

Americans probably still are but our politicians appear to be woefully overmatched. Mostly from challenges they created by their ill-considered actions. For which they find they can't or won't reverse because it would incur the wrath of persons who would be sure to make their existence unbearable. This is a classic case of painting yourself into a corner. With the only way out assuring there will be a mess to clean up. The rub in all this is their mess is our mess.

Thanks a lot for doing such a fine job guys. I'll do my best to show my appreciation next April 15th. Keep in mind though, given you have implicitly endorsed lying through your teeth as perfectly acceptable social behavior, don't expect too much. It's unfortunate that the entire country finds itself bound by your unethical conduct. You might have considered that before you decided to fuck us all. Have a nice day.

user-pic

have a nice day.

See

When I stay up all night....you can have me laughing until I turn it off.

Okay. I shall turn it all off. now. hhahahahahahaha
What a fine job they are all doing just for us. hahhaahahahahaha

user-pic

I expect any number of them to stop by one of these days and give me a big kiss. Or maybe they'll just send the FBI with their hardware very much on display. That'll be a really nice day.

Last Summer we watched Teddy basically retire, and pass the mantle of public service and the job of caretaker of the American Dream to Barack.

Is he up to the challenge? Can he rally the American people (the sane ones I mean) around a real cause, and deliver the goods, as Teddy did so many times?

I hope there can be a little more Teddy in Barack. The willingness to seek compromise we know he has, but Teddy only worked with those acting in good faith. Those who weren't were on the receiving end of his eloquent floor speeches, like the one Josh linked on the front page today.....We need more shaming of the disloyal opposition, IMO. Teddy also knew a majority when he saw one, and would absolutely never let an opportunity like this slip away.

Let's hope the spirit of the lion finds a new den in this White House.

I miss him, and am so sad to be stuck in Sab

user-pic

Sorry, premature submission....

I was saying I feel sad and lost, stuck in San Antonio for work this week, and not home in the warm, late Summer embrace of my beloved New England. Just to take a small part in the passing of this great man might bring some comfort. To be here in Texas, where they shot his brother, and where many are probably rejoicing today, makes me angry. I think I might just knock the next stupid cowboy hat off the next Texan that walks by.

Although given the lack of gun laws 'round here, maybe not a brilliant idea.

user-pic

I get in the same place, mentally, I am afraid Dorn.

I think the 'new Teddy' will come from the Senate. But Barack can learn something from our deceased friend.

Oh, and do not travel to Texas in the summer for chrissakes. hahahah Make it a good January gig.

user-pic

Good advice. It was 92 down here yesterday....at 10PM.
