The President No Longer Takes Our Calls
So many fruits ripe for the pickin' and all I got is two hands and a keyboard. Where to start?
While everybody else appears to be on My President's case I would like to talk about the repubs. It is soooooo much more fun.
The dems need some pushin' and some shovin' and some hard evidence that the peasants are revolting.
On the other side of the disillusion problem among the factions of the left, I do see one clear agreement among all. Or most anyway, even though I do love hyperbole. That is, there is no reason to deal with the repubs any longer. I mean they never dealt with us.
I told Miguel that Pelosi and Reid should simply paint the word 'republican' on a wall and negotiate with the wall for fifteen minutes and then get down to business. Ha!!!
To be fair folks, Grandma Pelosi has been doing just that. This woman who fell into community organizing while raising her children and now is the second most powerful woman in the world, is nobody to fool with. And I love her dearly. 44 dems abandoned her recently on an important piece of legislation...well kind of...and she got the legislation through anyway. Without Rahm on the floor; although I have the feeling that four letter words were flying on the telephone for some time. The vote was too close to believe that all stops were not pulled on this legislation. I am telling you those 44 were GIVEN LEAVE to do so; For political reasons in order to allow them to answer to their respective constituencies.
On the Senate side, one of my favorite pols is going to be sworn in as the 58th Democratic Senator. There are two independents. Bernie Sanders, an unrepentant socialist, like myself, is an independent. Bernie has been sending me the best of the newsletters by the by.
Lieberman was forgiven and wooed and he has committee status. People railed against this. Because of what some people thought were weak knees on the part of the WH and Reid, Lieberman is OURS. This man is not going to join in any filibuster. That is my opinion and we will see how prescient I am.
Dems are NOT GOING TO JOIN IN ANY SENATE FILIBUSTER. There I said it. We shall see if I am correct.
There are 536 people who run this country. Putting aside the oligarchy of the .1% who own everything. Ha. It takes smart politics in any atmosphere to run this country. Now the Dems are in control.
Frankly I could care less whether legislation is passed in the Senate by a vote of fifty-fifty with Vice President Biden breaking the tie, or whether that legislation is passed 60 to 40. As long as it is passed and signed by My President. By the by, some repubs will break ranks, as they did in the House anyway. THEY HAVE TO ANSWER TO THEIR CONSTITUENCIES TOO. HA!
Enough said.
Now let's have some fun.
How are the repubs doin?
I must start with 'the rush.' Few repubs have challenged this fascist demagogue. And when they have, they take back their words WITHIN AN HOUR AFTER THEY UTTER THEM. And that means that the dems can use words spat out by the demagogue against all repubs. There are so many gems here recently that I must cherry pick. The cherries are all ripe but I must watch my caloric intake.
First, the rush is ranting lately about 2016. Anybody who thinks Obama is going away in 2016 is nuts. He will single handedly change the constitution. Forget the idiocy involved in this charge. This is an indication. And this is an indication that the repubs see no chance of winning back the executive branch until 2016. I love this kind of message. It heartens me greatly. http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/200906300022
Second, the rush was only pining about his lack of feminine ratings in the last month or so. I blogged on this issue. Take a look at this gem from the big fat liar (as branded by good old Al Franken):
LIMBAUGH: All right, if there are any liberal newswomen in this audience, stop what you're doing. I have more Mark Sanford news. This guy is amazing. He's already being heralded by liberal infobabes for being really great at love letter writing, and he's really in love with the babe down in Argentina, and he just ought to go for it. I mean, they're schmaltzy, they're embarrassing, but, man, how romantic. Oh, it's just wonderful.
Remember when I said last week this guy could've been our JFK, still to this day, educated liberal reporters do not understand this. They think that I'm saying that Mark Sanford has some sort of great political reputation, image, charisma that could cause him to win a landslide -- no.
If you have to explain -- well, no, I'm not going to explain it. You people understand it -- the drive-bys do not. But here are the two AP alerts: First, South Carolina governor tells AP that the mistress down in Argentina is his soul mate, but he will try to fall back in love with his wife. AP alert number two: South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford tells AP he crossed lines with women other than the mistress but never had sex with them.
This guy is loyal to the mistress.
This guy does not cheat on the mistress. Do you realize how the liberal women
are going to eat this up? The liberal infobabes, oh, they're swooning, folks. I
will guarantee you they are having to excuse themselves and run to the bathroom
here to control themselves.
The repubs are really attempting to shut out women completely from the republican party. I mean who could ask for more? Yeah, this is the way to lure the fairer sex into your party. Attack them for bathroom breaks. When all the while, any decent reasoning citizen, EVERY SINGLE TIME HE OR SHE TURNS ON THE RADIO AND HEARS RUSH MUST TAKE A BATHROOM BREAK. Ha!!!
Ok. Now how is the rove coalition doing? You remember the corporate hogs and the religious right? Oh and the minority haters. The repubs would remain in power for generations. How is that going for ya now, rover?
Those wonderful Oklahomans, led by the likes of Imhofe would like to be the center of the discussion in the repub party. The legislature, in that great state recently passed a resolution that specifically cites President Obama's policies as well as his celebration of LGBT Pride month and his decision to end the National Prayer Day service at the White House as key causes of the current recession.
WHEREAS, we believe our economic woes are consequences of our greater national moral crisis; and
WHEREAS, this nation has become a
world leader in promoting abortion,
pornography, same sex marriage, sex trafficking, divorce, illegitimate births,
child abuse, and
many other forms of debauchery; and
WHEREAS, alarmed that the Government
of the United
States of America is forsaking
the rich Christian heritage upon which this nation was built; and
WHEREAS, grieved that the Office of
the president of these United States has refused
to uphold the long held tradition of past presidents in giving recognition to
our National Day of
Prayer; and
WHEREAS, deeply disturbed that the
Office of the president of these United States
disregards the biblical admonitions to live clean and pure lives by proclaiming
an entire month to an immoral behavior; http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/30/oklahoma-republicans-read_n_223074.html
Yeah that is going to work. Maybe for right wing evangelists who still have a job.
Oklahoma, where the bullshit comes sweepin down the plains,
Where the wavin' cheats,
Do not smell so sweet,
When the bullshit falls behind the rain,
Oklahoma, every night the repubs and the insane,
Sit alone and talk,
And watch the hawks,
Makin' lazy circles in the sky,
We know we're amakin a last stand
and the old party aint so grand
And when we say, hey! a yippy-i-o-ey
We're only sayin' You're doin' fine Oklahoma,
Oklahoma, O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A,
Oklahoma.
Now recall the eight repubs who broke ranks in the House, allowing some dems to appease their constituents?
Sam Stein at Huffpo: Michelle
Malkin, the prominent conservative commentator and writer, mocked
the those Republicans who "helped the Democrats pass a junk
science-based, massive national energy tax." Another conservative blogger,
Stacy McCain, demanded that the movement cut off donations to the National
Republican Congressional Committee in retaliation for the betrayal. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/30/gop-poised-to-eat-its-own_n_223164.html
I wish to examine this statement more closely. From my
parsing of this rather ridiculous statement, I perceive that the bill is
detested because it is science-based. Get it? Look at the hyphen between 'science'
and 'based'. Junk would appear to describe the entire bill. In other words, the bill is junk AND it is science based. ha!!!
My point here is that the repubs are now on record as being
against science-based anything. I mean read in the context of the resolution
passed by the Oklahoma Legislature and taken with the solemn oaths of most of the repub candidates for the
presidency (who swear they do not believe in 'evilution', the repub party is
against anything that is science based. Ha!!! IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!
How to wrap all this up. As eclectic as I choose to be today?
The next indication that the repubs are permanently on the run is provided at Plumline, Greg Sargent tells us:
OP leaders have a new complaint about President Obama: He's not reaching out to them nearly as much as he did earlier this year, when he road-tested his pledge of post-partisanship, only to get uniformly rebuffed on his first big legislative initiative.
Here's GOP Rep. Eric Cantor, giving voice to the new GOP gripe:
GOP leaders complain that the phone calls and White House invitations have slacked off -- perhaps because Obama's early efforts to woo Republicans yielded few votes.
"I think that in the beginning they seemed a lot more willing to go in and engage with us," said House Minority Whip Eric Cantor.
Of course, Democrats respond that Obama's initial outreach efforts weren't exactly reciprocated. House Republicans unanimously opposed his stimulus and his budget, and almost all of them opposed the big war spending bill. Many refused to condemn Rush Limbaugh for saying he hopes Obama fails.http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/uncategorized/gop-leadership-to-obama-you-never-call-you-never-write/
The repubs have reached a conclusion here that is hard to miss. I actually agree with them.
THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES IS NO LONGER TAKING THEIR CALLS.

And to those on "the left" who cavil and howl about betrayal: Learn the meaning of "complex" - as in, the problems we are now facing are complex. It's going to take some time to unwind them all, and nothing is going to happen instantaneously. Measure twice, cut once is a good guideline here. And remember, evolution produces longer-lasting results than revolution.

This is the FUN PART. I mean, everyone is scurrying around, debating and adding amendments and holding hearings.
Have you seen the schedule that Pelosi has instituted. Remember when Allen, and McConnel in the Senate were working 3 day weeks? And in the House it was no better. And the president, w, he would take half of every damn year off.
Oh I digress.
Thank you for this.

Right? I was downright disappointed just two months ago, thinking Obama was getting nothing done and swearing that he'd broken all his promises...
I look at everything he's done so far and I look at things like Franken's win (finally!) and just today I got an email from my Rep Nita Lowey asking me about health care - Nita Lowey rawks, btw, she really does - and I watch the Republican party implode and I realize that we're already half way there.
Obama promised us change. Well, we've got it. It's here. And it's good.

I read recently that Obama has taken the helm and he's turning things around like one would reverse course with a humongous ocean liner - slowly, but surely. Any faster and the ship would founder. I like the analogy because that is more or less how I see it although I have been hopping mad at him at times.

Beautiful analogy, Fala. I agree with you and Grouch -- it's moving slowly, but it's moving.
And that is as it should be.

You're welcome, DD. The whole evolution/revolution thing matters greatly. Societies that experience revolutions tend, with very few exceptions, not to be stable long-term. I'd rather move deliberately and with forethought, consolidating gains and progressing from there. It takes longer, yes, yet it also brings more stragglers along. That matters, and those left behind then are truly the "dead-enders".

I'm told the Bush administration didn't even bother to present an agenda to Congress from 2003 on. I guess that would involve actually thinking about strategy and trying to implement it.
As a student of both military and corporate strategy I find such detail oriented thinking to the exclusion of the big picture common but very, very strange. It assumes that the big picture is fixed and that you, as an individual, cannot have any effect on it and thus you can safely ignore it.
It does explain a lot of how conservatives deal with Congress. You lobby individual Representatives and Senators on specific topics, and delegate the big picture to specialists in Congressional management or in think tanks.

Exactly right. OG. I have been speaking to this point since reading Audacity of Hope and deciding to support Barack's primary bid by registering democrat for the first time. It was also why I promptly registered republican to vote for him in the general. It was in the interest of evolution vice revolution. To show how meaningless these labels we have clung to truly are.
Somehow, though, the memo Obama penned never really made it to the democratic faithful. They have taken great pleasure in their ascension, without really pausing long enough to change the tone of the debate. Further, being focused negatively on the republican leadership misses an opportunity to go straight to the conservative grassroots, who are dying for leadership right now.
The only thing attacking does is cause the wagons to circle.
I suspect the silent majority of the republican party is a couple nudges away from turning on the idiots in control of their party. Democrats have to give them a reason to bug their representatives. Progressives need to make a populist argument using pragmatic language and common sense solutions. It would be helpful if we actually believed the argument will resonate with all people instead of just our people.
When are we (meaning those who believe in progressive ideals to transform America) going to start exploring different means than continue partisan warfare which is only good at delivering crappy results? While the definition of insanity is doing the same thing expecting different results, I think in America's case it is also a pretty good definition of suicide.
Hope that makes sense, though I am sure OGD will come out of the woodwork to accuse me of being a "typical republican" or some such nonsense.

Funny DD! We get a lot of Oklahomans coming out to New Mexico to escape the heat and tedium of the flatlands, and while I know there are exceptions to every stereotype, I've met more asshats from that state than just about any other. Senator Inhofe is not one one of those exceptions.

I am not a fan of driving through Oklahoma, if only because the two times I did it I was in a truck that was not happy to catch crosswinds going through the hills.
But the bad times on both trips came when I crossed back into Kansas on I-35. The weigh station folks found BS reasons to separate me from money both times. (Driving sound reinforcement gear through the state without taking it out of the truck incurred a $15 charge, for some reason...)
Although I had a very good dinner and a number of glasses of Jameson's at an otherwise quite nondescript hotel in Guthrie! (Just outside OKC, for those who have not been there.)

Minnesota may be the home of Humphrey, Frazer, Mondale, Wellstone, and now Amy and Al but we had Coleman and Rudy Boswitz and tons of idiots that we voted for.
At some point I will dig into some notebooks I have and get into how many legislators in Virginia and Louisiana and other locales fought against secession and slavery....

As DD said FDRdog, I go back and forth between GA and FL. You may have Inhofe and Coburn, but back in 2000, FL had Katherine Harris as the Secretary of State, who was also serving as the co-chair of George W. Bush's Florida election campaign. She is best known for her decision to call off the recounts between Bush and Gore and to certify Bush as the winner (in a non-partisan manner, of course).
Let us also not forget Mark Foley, the too-friendly- to-pages innovative instant messenger. And how about his replacement, Tim Mahoney, the "I broke no laws" adulterer who confessed to multiple affairs during his two years in office? Sigh. These two loonies were my reps while in office.

Thanks for sticking up for the Okies, FDR. The broad brush does bother me. While OK is ten years behind the times, folks there are not heartless. We moved to a very small town there in the eighties. At the time we were the only hispanics in the all-white town. Needless to say, we were not welcomed with open arms. However, after a few years we became part of the social fabric.
Based on my experience, Oklahoma's backwards bent in the rural areas stems from having never experienced things. We were like aliens (the space kind, not the immigrant kind) landing on their planet. Once they got used to us, they accepted us.
This resolution is not at all surprising if you look at the state's history. I remember reading somewhere where that during prohibition, some lady used to crash the illegal booze places and hack the kegs with and ax. Do any of you other Oklahomans know the story? There is also the loyalty oath that all state employees have to sign.
Despite all of its faults, I love being from Oklahoma. I lived there during the darkest time, the bombing of the Murrah Building. We were very devastated, however, the same evangelical folks that put forth these silly resolutions also rushed to help anyone and everyone who was working during the aftermath. One lady I knew went with her church to help the rescue workers and said her job was to find any rescue worker who was alone and just talk to him/her to make sure they weren't breaking down.
I know its easy to get caught up in the cynicism of partisan politics, but lets stop painting people with broad brushes, as Mr. Obama also says because it really is beneath us to do so.

What's the point?!?! It ain't coming!!!
The Republicans have no legs. They are going no where. There has not been a single, well-developed idea coming from anyone at all. And Canter wonders why he is not getting calls any more!
An example of those earlier calls
Obama: Hi Eric!
Canter: Hello.
Obama: How are you doing?
Canter: Terrible. Your socialist agenda is destroying the country.
Obama: Okay, let's talk about it. Got any proposals we should consider?
Canter: Nope.
Obama: Maybe we can ...
Canter: Not voting for that.
Obama: How about ...
Canter: Nope.
Obama: Or ...
Canter: Not that either. Nope. I hope you fail.
Obama: Well I was just...
Canter: Buh-bye.
Is the problem Obama stopped calling, or that they have nothing to offer. No legs!

New Addition to Flush Limbo's Liberal Info Babe List:
"On Sanford himself, I’ve tried and failed to make the point that we need new words for adultery and extramarital affairs. It seems to me there are at least two types of adulteries and we misleadingly lump them together. There is the one-night-stand sort of adultery — the guy who wanders off with a series of youngish women so he can feel like a dashing playboy. Then there is the deeply-in-love sort of adultery.
Both types represent a betrayal of the family, of course. Sanford wasn’t just cheating on his wife. He was cheating on his children.
But I confess I think less harshly of people who commit adultery No. 2 than adultery No. 1. At least they are in search of something transcendent. They are in the grip of an addiction-like behavior.
Therein lies the paradox, though. People who commit sleazy adultery can probably go on with their lives and marriage. They may be shallow and selfish, but they can probably keep their affairs compartmentalized. People who commit true-love adultery actually do more damage to their families and to their entire lives. The betrayal is more tinged with profound feeling but also more complete." ---DAVID BROOKS

How I would have blasted your post a year ago. Now I shout Hooray, calling it like you see it and so true...........especially references to Rush! Once again I am reminded of what I believed in for far too many years - thanks to you and so many others at TPM, I am being reborn.
Hahahahahaha - The End

THE BEGINNING

Excellent post Dicken!
However I do have a caveat. Right now there are a group of people that identify themselves as 'republicans', perhaps not much longer, based on what the dregs of the party are doing to it, and I don't would rather invite their participation than disown them because of the idiots that happen to represent them. Just sayin'.
*And I got a strange lift from knowing that Murdoch and his crew were in a tizzy over Franken's win.
So you really don't think they will try to buy Lieberman or Specter, or some other dem in the senate?

Oops. And I should have shown proper respect by saying 'Excellent post my Obama'.
It's not all up to him. I do love and feel much gratitude for the president.

I am glad to hear that. Sync, you are an activist, but you hit the ground running.
You believe you can be part of change. Which means that you have not given up the ship!!!

Its about time DD. I don't listen to or read anything from the right and haven't since the beginning of the year. Even for the shortest period of time, if I might happen to, I stuggle to avoid regurgitating before I grab the remote and change the channel.
In war it is good to know what the other guy is doing but in this case where democrats are holding all aces I think their efforts are better focused on the business of the country.
Between Obama, Reid and Pelosi they need to get their house in order. If they don't, they may as well fold all those aces they are holding for all the good it'll do the country.
Democrats aren't particularly noted for having their stuff together but if ever it needed to happen now is it. Just look at what Bush did with a lesser majority. It wasn't good but they got where they wanted to go. The only thing stopping democrats are special interest lobbyists who arguably bear a large piece of responsibility for our mess. Democrats can continue with the charade or cut the bastards loose and do whats right for America.
This is soooo very simple. The power is there for the taking. They have to thrust the fatal blow to finance and health care now. Congress will never have this chance to take back their power like they have right now. They know nothing of the use of power if they don't. And for all those who scream bloody murder, take a cue from Bush and tell them all to suck dick. You can bet your ass if they don't Obama will be a one termer.

OK TPC. The lobbyists will always be with us. But our leaders need to understand how important it is to:
JUST SAY NO!!!

I like that DD. Start another Just Say No campaign directed at lobbyists and their money.
I'll bet a pizza and a beer you couldn't get 5 senators or congresspersons to commit to that for one entire campaign year / season.
And if I lose I'd drive all the way from here to there to pay up and enjoy that pizza and beer. Best pizza and beer I will have ever had by a long shot.

I know we all are happy that Obama is our president. He is one of the wisest men alive and it shows. And irritates the worst and ugliest out of the repubs.
We do have to give our president time and not constantly nag "why is he not doing that allready yesterday!" or "this is what he must do, this is what he must do, this is what he must do!" or " he has too much to do, but this he must do!"
Think of his campaign: there where many times when it looked that he was going to loose, and then when we least expected, he was in lead.
Like I said . He is a very wise man, he knows every thing takes it's time until a problem can solved. He cares about us.
With all this in this thread has keeping me laughing, so because I'm not very good in making people laugh I wanted to say something serioous. Maube somebody out there finds a good reason to laugh at my opinion.
