Promises To Keep

Well to start all this off, I think we should all sing along to the Woo Hoo Pokeman Song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-I7Z7swNMs

Woo hoo Woo hoo    Woo hoo Woo hoo    Woo hoo Woo hoo

All righty then. Senator John Ensign began his carreer in a similar vein to Lindsey Graham:

In 1994, Ensign won the Republican nomination for Nevada's 1st congressional district, based in Las Vegas. He was far behind four-term Democratic incumbent James Bilbray for most of the campaign. However, Ensign gained considerable momentum after reports surfaced that a Bilbray aide stood to make a huge profit from lands legislation sponsored by Bilbray.

So basically, Ensign was one of those revolutionaries riding into Congress with Gingrich Wave, capitalizing on the rising tide of fascism in this country with the added benefit of taking on an opponent charged with graft. And like Lindsey, Ensign rose to the level of Senator and had the opportunity to vote for the impeachment of Bill Clinton for moral failings. The Las Vegas Sun has reported:

The one-time mistress and campaign treasurer of Sen. John Ensign saw her salary double during the time of the affair, according to federal election documents.

It seems that Cynthia Hampton, doubled her pleasure and her fun as her salary went from $1400/month to $2800/month during this version of Wife Swap. Her boy even got into the act picking up over five grand for his help on Ensign's campaign.

Doug Hampton had been earning about $160,000 annually since he started on the senator's payroll on Nov. 8, 2006. He was one of the top paid aides in the office, receiving pay equal to the senator's chief of staff. http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2009/jun/17/ensign-resigns-gop-leadership-post/J. Patrick Coolican (contact), Lisa Mascaro (contact)

Okay then. Well we gotta lotta things going here, do we not?  I mean we have a man who is a:

Born again Christian (I suppose he could get born again again? I mean what is to stop this? And further mistakes and he could do it again and again and again)

Promise Keeper. Thanks to Steve Katz, I was given a link to this wonderful organization. It claims five and a half million members. Of course this would be hyperbola but it tells me there are more than a million who think they are promise keepers and I would think that Senator Ensign will not be asked to speak at their yearly convention any time soon.

Minority Leadership Positions in the Senate. Not anymore.

Potential Presidential Candidate. Come on, get serious.

Senator from the great State of Nevada. Let us see about that.

Well the Senate has its own ethics rules. And it will be fun to see how the ethical considerations play here. Cannot you see the answers to some of the questions without even seeing the questions:

A.         Ms. Hampton showed real development in her role with the campaign and I felt it important that she be rewarded for her new found production.

B.         Ms. Hampton's role in the campaign shifted at the time of her raise, due to her newly discovered talents.

C.         There are others in my Senate Office and in my Campaign that are charged with deciding the proper monies that should be paid to employees, I am above such things.

Well I could go on and on here.  But how best to defend a brother in a situation like this? Well Lindsey has come to the defense:

In an interview with Politico about Sen. John Ensign's recent admission of an affair with a campaign staffer, Sen. Lindsey Graham said he had his own secret "sins."

"I think he will be welcomed back by his colleagues and go back to being a good senator," said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who said Ensign shouldn't have resigned his leadership spot.

Graham downplayed the political impact this would have on the GOP, saying, "Most Americans look at this as a personal situation."

Graham let out a laugh and said: "I've got plenty of sins that I'm not going to share with anyone else." HuffPo.

Well what kind of sins could we be talking about here?  Both Graham and Ensign gave wonderful speeches about how and why Clinton should have been impeached; one in the House and one in the Senate.

I usually do not go for Chris Rock's style of humor although it turns out he is a great dad and a great husband in spite of his spiels. But he did a great monologue about Clinton during the impeachment process. Basically he was saying:

I mean he cheated on his wife and lied about it. IS NOT THAT WHAT HE WAS SUPPOSED TO DO?

He was asked about extra marital affairs and he lied about it. IS NOT THAT WHAT HE WAS SUPPOSED TO DO?

But our friend Lindsey, he thinks that Ensign's problems are personal in nature. And after all, everybody has some sins they are not going to share with anyone else. I mean where is the forgiveness here? Where is the understanding?

Well I checked out the web.  And it appears that our southern friends in South Carolina, the capital of the Confederacy--forget that Richmond stuff--have some misgivings with our bachelor Senator. Well the Charleston City Newspaper has come questions back in September of 2007:

Is Lindsey Graham gay?

At 52, the life-long bachelor has been fodder for such rumors for years, but with the resignation of Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho -- the anti-gay politician who pled guilty to disorderly conduct after allegedly soliciting sex in an airport men's room -- the internet is abuzz over who's next, and they're dying to know what's going on in Graham's bedroom. Is it the latest grasp for the light switch in South Carolina's powerful political closet? Or the inevitable labeling of "closet-clinging self-hater" that befalls any content bachelor?

Mainstream media often avoids asking older, single politicians what they do in their free time. While there were rumors dating back 25 years, it wasn't until blog reports about Craig trolling cruisy D.C. restrooms that The Idaho Statesmen put a reporter on the story. And even though they held the story until after Craig's arrest was made public, some still accused the paper of orchestrating a witch hunt.

When GQ asked last year, Graham wasn't mean, just dismissive. He said he's not gay, just a loner. But that denial isn't stalling renewed interest in the question. In a post on who's next out of the closet following Craig's arrest, blogger Michael Signorile (www.signorile.com) first points a questioning finger at Graham. http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A32974

In another blog site called 'Down With Tyranny" it was noted that:

Lindsey Graham (R-SC), an unmarried/never married 52 year old with a funny, forced way of walking, has been far more fastidious with his homosexuality. Again, "everyone" knows-- except the voters in conservative South Carolina. Not that it doesn't come up from time to time; people talk. In fact, the head of the Democratic Party in South Carolina said something when the effeminate Lindsey decided to run for Thurmond's senate seat. "He's a little too light in the loafers" to succeed Strom Thurmond. Graham got into a really queenie tizzy fit and loudly threatened to sue-- although he didn't. (They never do.) http://downwithtyranny.blogspot.com/2007/02/is-lindsey-graham-homo-does-pope-go.html

Look, normally I would not care if Lindsey is gay or not. But if he is, he is just another son of a bitchin' repub living his double life, projecting phony standards that do not apply to him. He and Ensign speaking out against gay rights, for phony Constitutional Amendments, challenging Democrats as being against 'family values'; its all a bunch of hooey.  But we must remember that Lindsey, he took over the seat of one of the biggest hypocrites in history, old Strom Thurmond.

'Segregation now, segregation forever.  Except in my bedroom'

These self-righteous, preening closet cases infuriate me no end.

Having two gay relatives, and knowing as I do that they are not only family members but wonderful human beings, anyone who seeks to further, or even continue, discrimination against them - for whatever reason - is my enemy. No one attacks my family members without earning my enmity.

And it's always the closet cases that are the most vocal. Keep "those people" away from the rest of us, they cry, don't let them live normal lives, or express their love for each other in anything remotely like commitment. And certainly don't let them have the same rights as the rest of us.

Got news for you, Lindsey Graham, it's changing around you whether you like it or not. Deal or crawl back into your closet. And leave my family, and those they choose to love, the bloody hell alone.

user-pic

Very well put, me. I haven't a thing to add.

Except - another good one, Dick!

user-pic

Thank you. Just...thank you.

user-pic

Hi Missy. thank you for your support as always.

user-pic

Oh Grouch I get so mad at these people, especially when they pontificate.

user-pic

Promises To Keep

and Promisers To Dump

user-pic

Eds, thanks for dropping by. There is more to this than hypocrisy and I really am trying to get ahold of it.

It is lying to your constituency for power and of course money for your friends while you are in power.

It is attacking a minority group for no other reason than retaining the same power....

The word hypocrisy just does not do justice.

This promise keeper organization is opening their arms to Ensign anyway. ha

user-pic

Promise Keepers. Just Words!

user-pic

Yeah. I mean, who really is on the record as being against promises?

Except maybe insurance companies according to FAce today. Ha

user-pic

I feel a little bit sad for people who stay in the closet, especially the politicians who are so frightened that they'll be outted that they rail against who they are. In my perfect world, everyone is free to be.

user-pic

Hi O. Thank you for the link. I actually played fifteen minutes of it. I remember this.

Marlo was always a favorite of mine.

I guess I am just really mad at Lindsey for impeaching MY PRESIDENT. ha

user-pic

I'm being funny and fictitious when I say this. But when my Gay daughter comes home with her partner , where she is completely welcomed as is her partner , I always wait to feel "the threat to my marriage"; it never happens. I like the attitude in what Old Grouch said. "These self- righteous , preening closet cases infuriate me to no end." I hate them too.

But dickday what's up with a obviously Gay Senator like Lindsey Graham not only denying who he really is but "attacking" , at many levels , Gay people and the Gay culture. It's akin to something like what happens to some Black people in America who , as a result of having been raised in a country that's obviously hostile to them , they buckle under this type of treatment and the effect is you have Black people that end up not appreciating who they are as people and , in fact , end up being "closet haters" of who they are. In my opinion this is a defiant state to have yourself in. So what I'm saying is that Lindsey Graham in the end is hating himself. In time this behavior is going to come back and effect Lindsey Graham adversely. Just like the warehouse suit guy says; I guarantee it.

user-pic

Viper I was trying to draw parallels to the two senators. Now one senator is just what he is-if we believe rumors-and the other is actually committing adultery.

And they are both pushing the same hypocritical message, both dumping on gays the best they know how.

Most of the time they get away with it.

user-pic

Makes you wonder what promises they ARE keeping. So often it doesn't seem to be to constituents or wives. Or being honest when they criticize people's orientation if they are one of them
Good piece, DD. Re'd.

user-pic

Hi Maggie. hahahaha

user-pic

All I have to say on this one DD is that this particular picture of Lindsay Graham really creeps me out.

user-pic

I thought that too. That is why I chose it. Came from the somewhat homophobic blog I quote that I think is not homophobic at all but rather written by a Gay or by one who spends a lot of time writing for Gay causes.

Graham has no defense to his position, if these rumors are true.

user-pic

I think he should be free to stay in the closet if he wants to. He's an old southern man. Different generation. I ran into a few of the "closet" gays in my lifetime, and I think they would have been happiest staying there. Just my own experience.

What he is NOT free from, is charges of hypocrisy. He has no family so he shouldn't espouse on family values. He's clueless. If he'd like to take up the cause of "loners," (and there are plenty,) let him do so. He can leave families, openly gay people, and others out of his rhetoric, though.

I don't think anyone takes him too seriously, anyway.

user-pic

"take up the case of loners" - I like that!

Linzey for Loners.

user-pic

Sorry... "take up the cause for loners" (misquoted you there) ;)

user-pic

hahahha. You get a chuckle out of me!!

I miss you too. And everyone. I need this time.

user-pic

What he is NOT free from, is charges of hypocrisy. He has no family so he shouldn't espouse on family values."

EGGSACTLY

user-pic

BUT, he's John McCain's 'BFF'! And surely Senator McCain (Rep.) would not support Senator Graham's (Rep.) duplicity!

I don't know dd, that would be so unlike the GOP who tout their banner of Christianity and Honesty. Are you suggesting that (gulp) they are hypocrites and preach their righteous convictions, yet are hypocrites and living lies?!?

And gee, I've always thought Senator Graham (Rep.) and his ilk were always honest in thought and deed. (heh heh)

Great post. Rec'd.

user-pic

Ok Auntie. Well, yes they ARE ALL HYPOCRITES. HAHAHAHAH

user-pic
Graham downplayed the political impact this would have on the GOP, saying, "Most Americans look at this as a personal situation."

And indeed WE may, but the Republicans certainly do not.

user-pic

You got that right Rowan. hahahahaha

user-pic
So, infidelity hasn't been the most reliable of marriage-strengtheners for the Ensigns when it comes to the long term.

That's why I thought it would be helpful to solicit marital advice for Ensign from some local couples whose sturdy unions make them experts on how to keep marriage healthy.

Unlike Ensign, these people are gay. But they seem to have a better handle on the sanctity of the institution than he does.

Let it rip, Kate Williamson.

"My marriage is more about fidelity" than Ensign's is, says Williamson. She's a human-resources exec at Campbell's Soup who recently sanctified her 12-year union with Susan Preston in a church ceremony.
[. . .]
Francis Saba, who has been with husband Victor Rivera for 28 years (they married in Vermont a few years ago), thinks that Ensign's marriage is doomed unless he gets therapy to figure out who he really is.

"Clearly, he can't live by those Promise Keeper standards, or he never would've had the affair," says Saba, who owns Francis Salon, near Rittenhouse Square.

"If your moral standards say you don't pounce on someone just because you find them attractive, but you pounce on them anyway, then who are you? If you're that at odds with what your standards are, then they're not your standards."

Ronnie Polaneczky, "Need marital help, Sen. Ensign? Ask a gay couple", Philadelphia Daily News, June 18, 2009
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), one of the most conservative members of the Senate and a housemate of Ensign’s in Washington, said he was “surprised” by the news and called Ensign “a good friend” who he hoped would continue to serve in the Senate. But DeMint, a social conservative like Ensign, didn’t know whether Ensign could reemerge as a leader of the party and said all politicians have credibility problems now.

Manu Raju, "John Ensign resigns leadership post", Politico, June 18, 2009

user-pic

You need a woo hoo Song 2. Blur.

user-pic

Oh to be young and on amphetamines.
Ha!!!

user-pic

This post would have been better served had you left conjecture about someone's private life out of it. There is more than enough hypocrisy in the Promise Keepers/Ensign scenario to float a boat.

You say,

"Look, normally I would not care if Lindsey is gay or not. But if he is, he is just another son of a bitchin' repub living his double life, projecting phony standards that do not apply to him."

AND IF HE'S NOT?

user-pic

Take a look at Bwak's comment.

user-pic

Graham's parents died when he was 21/22 and he adopted his younger sister to legally be responsible for her.
I think commenting on someone's values, whether it be familial or spiritual, without first hand knowledge is irresponsible.
I'm not saying Graham is not a hypocritical on many levels. Syncronicity's blog " Beyond Paradox: Painting With A Broader Palette" hits the bullseye here. Any person is capable of holding certain values dear while casting others to the heap.

user-pic

I am shocked, SHOCKED to find out another member of our government is corrupt.

user-pic

ha! Methinks you protest too much. hahahaha

user-pic

Plenty of examples of people who have deliberately made their personal lives public or have made statements about their personal lives public, perhaps reluctantly because of actual factual revelations that demonstrate their hypocrisy.

IMHO, though, to put forth only added conjecture about someone's personal life can be destructive.

I am hardly an advocate for Sen. Graham and there are countless concrete examples of his hypocrisy, but I'm going to respect the guy's right to privacy on this particular issue. The conjecture is none of my business.

Ensign, on the other hand, chose, albeit reluctantly, to make his personal life our business by calling a press conference and admitting to an affair and he'll have to face the public fallout.

Of course there's a pattern of hypocrisy and members in congress should be held to account for that.

But there's a line you're straddling here that I've seen crossed so frequently on right-wing extremist blogs. What I know of you tells me there is no way you could cross that line as maliciously as some lunatics in the blogosphere do.

I can't recommend this post, DD. I have no holier than thou feelings about it, I go too far sometimes too.

My blessing is that I have friends that offer a word of caution for me simply to consider when I do.

user-pic

Well stated. If it were easier for me to type, I would have more adequately presented tpmgary's sentiments in my reply to DD.

user-pic

THIS GUY IMPEACHED MY PRESIDENT ON THE BASIS OF SOME GODDAMNABLE PHONEY MORALITY./ HE IS A DIRTY ROTTEHN BASTARD ASND I HOPE HE ROTSW IN FUCKING HELL

user-pic

Now, you've written something in which we have total agreement

user-pic

I don't like the guy either, DD. But he's not worth my contempt on the grounds of conjecture.

There's so much else about the guy with which to vilify him and publicize his immorality, though, that's on the record.

user-pic

woo hoo wooo hooo hooo woo hoo wooo hooo hooo
woo hoo wooo hooo hooo woo hoo wooo hooo hooo
