APLOMB: I Did Not Have Sex With That Cigarette

aplomb

-noun

1.

imperturbable self-possession, poise, or assurance.

2.

the perpendicular, or vertical, position.

Origin:
1820-30; < F à plomb according to the plummet, i.e., straight up and down, vertical position

Synonyms:
1. composure, equanimity, imperturbability.

Antonyms:
1. confusion, discomposure; doubt, uncertainty.

MCCLATCHY: Thank you, Mr. President. As a former smoker, I understand the frustration and the fear that comes with quitting, but with the new law that you signed yesterday regulating the tobacco industry, I would like to ask you a few questions, how many cigarettes a day --

OBAMA: A few questions?

MCCLATCHY: Well -- how many cigarettes a day do you smoke? Do you smoke alone or in the presence of other people? And do you believe the new law would help you to quit and why?

OBAMA: Well, first of all the new law that was put in place is not about me, it's about the next generation of kids coming up. So I think it's fair, Margaret, to just say that you just think it's neat to ask me about my smoking as opposed to if -- being relevant to my new law. But that's fine. I understand. It's an interesting human interest story. Look. I've said before that as a former smoker, I constantly struggle with it. Have I fallen off the wagon sometimes? Yes. Am I a daily smoker, a constant smoker? No. I don't do it in front of my kids. I don't do it in front of my family. You know, I would say that I am 95 percent cured, but there are times where -- there are times when I mess up. And I've said this before. I get this question about once every month or so. And I don't know what to tell you other than the fact that, you know, like folks who go to AA, you know, once you've gone down this path, then it's something you continually struggle with. Which is precisely why the legislation we signed was so important. Because what we don't want is kids going down that path in the first place. Okay? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/23/obamas-smoking-questioned_n_219707.html

I just marvel at this. Clinton could do this. Remembering of course that with a few weeks notice, Willie would never have mustered 250,000 Germans to listen to a speech. I remember when Obama gave that speech, he walked out in front of that mass of humanity like he was born to lead them.  He was only a candidate. It pissed off the repubs sooooooo bad that Fox at first was reporting numbers approaching some tea bag gathering months later and then, our repub shills did a one eighty and accused Barack of pandering and seeking some world government. Ha!

But Willie could answer the meanest, rottenest question given to him by the likes of evil perpetrators of doom like Hume.  He needed no teleprompter to answer inane questions and he never walked away perturbed like Nixon or w.

Back to the press conference. Our New President did not have notes. He did not have a teleprompter. He just courteously slapped the idiot down.  Did he say:

I did not have sex with that cigarette?

No. He looked right into the accuser's eyes and answered him directly.

Am I a sinner?  You betcha, but like every godfearing man, I seek redemption. How about you?

When Barry gives the speech of a lifetime, Fox is yelling about the teleprompter. Ha! Their favorite son could not even pronounce half the words on a teleprompter.

When Barry responds to meaningless inquiries from the press, he is eloquent and yet he can be disparaging without being that disparaging. You know what I mean?

When Barry is set to give a speech and throngs of people show up on a moment's notice, ten or twenty times the number Palin could ever muster, Fox will accuse him of being a celebrity. Ha!  They are accusing him of being popular. BRING IT ON!!!

When Barry chooses not to hide in some stronghold euphemistically called a ranch but instead comes out fighting EVERY SINGLE DAY, Fox would accuse him of pandering or some such.

I watched a tape of him exiting a plane and doing a 'half stumble' with his first step. No cable news pundit said a word. You know why? Because even when he stumbles he does it with aplomb.

Mathews is still ribbed about his comment after one of Barry's early speeches:

I felt an electrical charge going up my leg.

To be honest I only feel like that when I am chatting with Bwak or LisB. Hahahahahaha.

But I feel a tingling up my spine at times. I feel a lightening in my head. Maybe lightning is a better metaphor. Whatever happens, I am so proud to have this man representing my country.

My favorite professor here is Amike.  If you have time go back and read some of his recent blogs about parsing and such. When he listens to Barry or reads Barry he is not comparing him to w, he is comparing him to great writers and speakers. The professor is the only one here who spends any time on Cicero--except for me. Ha! Anyway Amike made the following comment on one of my blogs:

The clarity and the ambiguity of words make human life possible, which may be a gift or a curse, depending on what side of the bed I wake up on.

The right is certainly wrong about our New President.  And so cruel and so libelous. And Barry is getting a lot of pressure from the left nowadays. Which is to be expected and I believe, righteous.  It is a good thing that the 'base' attempts to keep our Leader honest.

People are getting angry at him. And as time goes on, they are getting angrier and angrier.

Me?  I am more than proud to call Barack Obama my President. I have only felt that way recently.

Thank you for this, Dickon. Thank you for this well-needed reminder that, yeah....he IS a great President so far, and an even greater man.

As far as the tingle up the leg goes, well....you go the same to me, I'm just too damn shy to say so.

As far as amike goes, I know of no other who can take our President's words apart and put them back together again so beautifully as amike.

Beautiful, wonderful, post. And highly rec'd.

As far as the tingle up the leg goes, well....you go the same to me, I'm just too damn shy to say so.

See? See what you do to me, you rascal? I meant to say you DO the same to me, not GO.....

..oy.

*fans self*

The Professor is fun, is he not? I think he kind of gets the summer off and we are graced with more a presence.

And you just know how kindly he treats his students by his poise in our little club, dont you?

user-pic

Another wonderful blog - you are always on a roll, DD. I was one of those who laughed at Chris for that statement about tingles - thought it was too funny. But - you writing about it puts it in a different tone- hmmmmmm Lisb gives you an electrical charge when you chat??? My goodness......

Enjoyed this one and am sitting here trying to find some redemption in W's speeches and press conferences. Remember cringing and waiting for him to make yet another blunder and hoping to hell it wouldn't be quoted in the press for days on end. Such confidence in a president.
President Obama does not cause such worry - he is eloquent, with or without a teleprompter.

user-pic

Nicely said....and I'm glad you lost your Republican teleprompter viewer thingie. ;)

user-pic

My teleprompter thingie????? Sounds like something I would say, haha.

user-pic

Yeah, well, it sounds like something your former Pres that you once liked would've said....

....just sayin. ;)

xoxo

Oh Maggie, you recall a time when Ike, with all his frailties...we knew who was president of the United States of America. He had won WWII for Chrissakes. (blesses himself)

He would appear in Arkansas with troops to protect Black students from racists and he'd say:

Do you know how bad you are making our country look right now?

I laugh because instead of being afraid of the situation he was mad and avuncular. hahahahahaha

I have to remember that not all repubs were or are bad.

IT JUST SEEMS THAT WAY NOW. HAHAHAHAHA

user-pic

Wot's all this tingly leg syndrome stuff DD? Oh. I remember sumthin' about an "18 incher". Check. That qualifies as a leg. Just try not to hurt anybody. 'K? Good blog.

user-pic

HAHHAHHA. What are ya, one of those piglets who never forgets?

I HAD BEEN TALKING ABOUT MY TV FOR CHRISSAKES!!!(Blesses himself)hahahhaha

user-pic

Of all the unfair and irelevant things the press asks of the President, the questions about his smoking are tops in my book.

First of all it's his business and none of ours. Second, anyone who has ever been addicted to tobacco understands that the last thing anybody trying to quit needs is some idiot constantly questioning you about it. Third, I would much rather have the President smoke when he feels like it than constantly being in a state of withdrawal because of his inability to really and finally and completely stop smoking.

Every time an addict has a cigarette they reignite the full force of the addiction and necessarily have to restart the entire withdrawal process over again. That's what the President is describing when he says he falls off the wagon now and then.

Well the withdrawal is the absolute worst part of the whole process! It makes one irritable, cranky, sleepy, short-tempered, feeling sick, some even get constipated. I don't think this man needs all that additional stress and BS right now. I say, let him smoke if he chooses to and leave him the hell alone about it.

user-pic

It is appalling to me that a reporter has a chance to ask the President of the United States a question, and THS is the best she can do? And in such a rude way. Good luck on getting called on again, Margaret!

user-pic

But CVille, this President likes irony. He may well call on this idiot first next time. Ha!!

user-pic

And you just know there are conservatives out there going apoplectic because they want to start pushing
the Stones Monkey Man as his theme music.
And they don't dare ...

user-pic

Oleeb, the inane questions will always be with us!!

Just like 68/69 we are on the Eve of Destruction and
when you think about it, there are soooooooooo many questions to ask. And these idiots who have the chance to make history..........

Oh well........

user-pic

It makes one irritable, cranky, sleepy, short-tempered, feeling sick, some even get constipated.

This is a good example of TMI.

Thanks for sharin', Oleeb.

:-)

user-pic

Hidin' again Seashell. Well I caught ya. hahahahaha

user-pic

Thank God Obama didn't smoke cigars or there would have been another reference to Clinton's conduct with smoking products when he wasn't inhaling.

user-pic

You got that right EJG. hahahahah

user-pic

Yeah, but it might have expedited that whole normalization of relations with Cuba thing. Which probably would not have been a bad thing.

user-pic

Yeah Kenga, we only have rush to sell those 'illegal' smokes.

user-pic

I think you have hit on what is required to lead, Dick. Tingles. TheraP seemed to raise a similar point when she asked the question back in the day, What makes B.O. transformational? I believe it was about a year ago. The man is just so good at what he does he causes one to tingle. We connect. But just remember, Dick, it takes one to know one in this tingling function. It is electricity and it is magic.

I bet Barry can sing, as well.

user-pic

Oh Loosey, you were on idle when I called for you last night. Singing and DANCING. So do not forget dancing. Sync likes to sneak out night after night and dance.

Bees and ants seek out new sources of sustenance and they come back to their homes and DANCE. It communicates where the food is!!!

Sync of course was a singer also, in a band. But this NEW PRESIDENT DANCES as he approaches the dais.

I will bet he does sing in private and his wife would laugh at him but with charity. HA!!!

Rites of the ancients included dancing with singing; remembrances of things past in celebration. The tempo and the chant increasing the adrenaline flow, the adrenaline high. Community. Ha!!!

Now you have me going Loosey.

user-pic

Yes DANCING, Dick! I was going to mention dance last night. I mean, really it's about the music too, don't you agree? But I will bet that Barry is simply a fine singer with a good voice. I hear it in this phrasing and see it in his walk. He is quite musical. To me it's part and parcel of intelligence.

user-pic

President Obama has skills. He is very present, receives, considers, and responds(quite different than reacting).

I believe organizations including countries come to reflect their leaders.

The state of things that Bush/Cheney created is a direct reflection of their leadership and who they are...(and we're choking on it).

But now we have an incredible opportunity to reflect a president with some quality skills.

We have the opportunity to make this 'aplomb' part of who we are and part of our american culture. If we could see president Obama have as great an impact on our country as Bush/Cheney did, but based on his skills, integrity, and morals rather than theirs, I think we will land on our feet and in better shape than ever.

That would be awesome!

user-pic

Sync:

LET US PRAY

user-pic

Seriously though DD... look at any organization... it will reflect it's leader or leaders. Fox News... Google... Disney... MSNBC...take your pick.

So I say we picked the right guy this time.

user-pic

Sync, I am feeling that electricity go right up my spine and my head is lightening at your comment. No kidding. It is like there is a chance..We, the people have a chance.

I saw a tape of him this morning. Our own people--the left--are attacking him and he is saying on tv, hey, I want a public option.

Sure Rahm says we will consider..........

This is chess, this is politics.

BUT I TRUST THIS GUY.

You show me in eight years where I went wrong.

You are sooooooooooo right on this. I am too lazy to Wiki it right now, but the Chancellor of Germany, at the time of Kennedy...he was in prison during the Nazi era....clean as pure snow....he made such a difference in this world.

I already pointed out to Maggie somewhere, Ike MADE A DIFFERENCE. When Ike went to Europe, Europeans went NUTS. This is the guy that saved us. Of course Truman had so much responsibility for all of that with Marshall, but Ike was the ETO
commander....

PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD LOVED US.

I cannot underline enough what hope I felt, before the election, when Barry showed up in Germany....and the throngs of people looking for hope.

It is like a few years ago....there were 200 openings for longshoremen JOBS in California and 12000 people showed up for applications to get one of those jobs......

Nobody would get a job from attending an Obama speech. He sells hope...

See, I shed a tear as I write this. I know now, from having the opportunity to write AND BE READ HERE, that I am not alone, I am not crazy.

There are so many out there that feel and believe what I do.

AND YOU ARE ONE OF THEM. HA!!!!!!!!!!!!

user-pic

Yes. It's real DD.

'Some people' are meant to be skeptics and they make us think and they serve us that way but we should only take what they offer into account and never let it stop us or bring us down

AND DD 'YOU' are not one of those people:)

user-pic

That is the most inspiring thing I have read in weeks. Thank You!

user-pic

My pleasure.

Remember this guy said he needs 'us'. 'WE' can 'be' the change we are looking for. It may sound hokey but a lot of things need to change around here including 'us'.

Remember this is a man who told us how he was inspired by the old woman at a sparsely attended rally who started shouting 'fired up' 'ready to go'.

Barack Obama is in this job to be of service... not to serve himself. Of that I am sure.

user-pic

Personal question for you Dr Day, when is the last time you, "had sex with that cigarette?"

It's just a rumor but I hear that they want to make TPM Cafe smoke free (unless you have a prescription).

user-pic

Well Steve it is a long story. And when I say long it was much longer than 100 mms so to speak.

Me and a lucky strike....well I mean it was better than with the camel.........

But I digress

user-pic

Thank you for the too kind words, DickDay. I'm insecure enough to enjoy praise--especially from someone who writes like I wish I could write. And thanks for the recommendation for the Parsing the President series. The last one swirled off the front page so fast I don't know who got a chance to read it. There are some cool links to stuff about Saul Alinsky in it, if I do say so myself.

I have been accused of being an Obamabot from time to time, but I take it in stride. Of course he disappoints me from time to time. I disappoint me from time to time, for goodness sakes. Right now I'm listening to an report from the BBC which is making me groan with embarrassment for the Administration and for the country as a whole. You can catch it on http://www.theworld.org. This needs investigation and a lot of ruckus, I think.

But in the context of recent leaders, and leader wannabe's I think he's head and shoulders above the rest. And as far as disappointment goes. I have to quote another favorite of mine, John Winthrop (who did not hunt witches.)

I entreat you to consider that, when you choose magistrates, you take them from among yourselves, men subject to like passions as you are. Therefore, when you see infirmities in us, you should reflect upon your own, and that would make you bear the more with us, and not be severe censurers of the failings of your magistrates, when you have continual experience of the like infirmities in yourselves and others. We account him a good servant who breaks not his covenant. The covenant between you and us is the oath you have taken of us, which is to this purpose: that we shall govern you and judge your causes by the rules of God's laws and our own, according to our best skill. When you agree with a workman to build you a ship or house, etc., he undertakes as well for his skill as for his faithfulness, for it is his profession, and you pay him for both. But when you call one to be a magistrate, he doth not profess nor undertake to have sufficient skill for that office, nor can you furnish him with gifts, etc., therefore you must run the hazard of his skill and ability. But if he fail in faithfulness, which by his oath he is bound unto, that he must answer for.
(emphasis mine)

Thanks again.

God I love this. (blesses himself) I really do Amike for about ten reasons.,

Sometimes, I hope this is not off subject, the engineer, the real worker not the PHD, is the real hero. For the first time in my memory, the real builder, erector, mechanic is being given some homage on the tellie.

I think about this often.
