McChrystal/ MacArthur

I find Gates to be, of all Admin officials, the most candid and least gaffe-prone. So I have to wonder why he said "the military will fall in line" behind Obama's decision, whatever it will be.

I think he is simply pointing out that the military will do their duty and their duty is to fall in line with the CIC.

Yes, I agree, but it shouldn't have to be said.

I think that during the Watergate scandal there was some fear of the civilian chain of command breaking. Can we be in the midst of such a crisis now?

I suppose that Petraeus is the best the Republicans have to offer at this point. He is a moderate Republican, probably to the right of Snowe and the left of everyone else in that wretched party.

I still have to wonder why Gates had to say what he said. I think it betrays, if not disruptions in the chain of command, then terrible confusion about what is going on in Afghanistan. But we knew that already...
